1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2020

I bought this car from private seller. On the drive home I turned on ac and noticed a surge so I turned the air off. After getting the car home I filled the tank as it was almost empty when I purchased the car. The car began to surge forwards and backwards at an idle, and then began to surge while driving. Check engine light came on and codes indicated it was a misfire, so did a tune up (changed spark plugs and coils) only to have the issue get worse. The car is now almost stalling and surging hard. Car is very slow to accelerate and feels to have no power while attempting to get up to even in town speeds(25-30mph) car is undrivable safely at this point and I have not even owned 2 months. Surging happens at idle, low speeds, freeway speeds, and surges violently when trying to accelerate.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

The accelerator pedal is unresponsive and the vehicle will move very slowly at first, then unpredictably lunge forward at higher speeds. Occasionally the pedal will immediately respond with rapid acceleration when lightly touched, causing the tires to spin out while taking off from a stop. Altering the way pressure is applied to the accelerator has no effect. This has been happening for over 3 months without any check engine indicators, and only recently when the vehicle had trouble idling did a check engine light come on. The vehicle has been well maintained and lightly driven.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

Driving down the interstate in traffic the engine stalls wrench light came on, leaving me with no power to control my speed. As my car quickly reduces speed on a major interstate I attempt to get over to the shoulder out of harms way. This is happened 4 times, the latest time our check engine light came on and stays on. P2104, p2100, p2112, and p0325 codes are present. I have seen Ford has recalled 1. 6 million electronic throttle body in Ford escape, Mercury mariner, and Mercury milan vehicles with the same 3. 0l engine and same electronic throttle body. All Ford has to do is to list the Ford Freestyle as one of these recall vehicles for the etb to be repaired/replaced. This is a very scary situation to be in with children in the car and you have no power to you accelerator to get out of the way of speeding vehicles all around you!! I don't know what to do, very expensive to replace the etb.

4 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2012

After purchasing (as a used car) for my daughter, vehicle began rapid acceleration and 'lurching' unexpectedly when shifting into forward or reverse. After several days, this was compounded by occurring when starting and stopping in traffic during brake application. I had the filters replaced (air and gas) and the problem seemed to have gone away. I asked my dealership, during my first inspection after it's purchase, wether there was a TSB in regard to this issue and would they please check it out. They alleged that they had no record of any defect regarding this issue and no TSB had been issued. They did however refuse to complete the inspection until I allowed them to overhaul the rear brakes w/new rotors for quite a kingly sum! (so much for a promotional 'free inspection'. ) last night I had to venture out and retrieve the vehicle from my little girl after the car kept 'lurching' everytime she used the brake. While she was waiting in an intersection attempting to make a left turn, the car 'lurched' and stalled in front of oncoming traffic. After restarting the car an engine light and a 'wrench' was now visible on the dash, and the car had absolutely no accelerator! due to our flat terrain I was able to bring the car home on an idle at a speed no greater than 10 m. P. H. Once safely home I tried a trick that used to work on the fleet busses I once worked on. That was rapidly turning the ignition switch on-off, on-off repeatedly about 10 (ten) times, then leave switch on and start it. This seemed to have cleared the 'wrench' and the accelerator was restored. The engine light did not clear. I've put tires, struts, strut mounts etc. Into this car to make it safe for my daughter to drive, yet I can't allow her to use it. 4 of 5 cars I own are Fords, 2 being 2006 Freestyles, and this is the only one that I have had a problem with. What recourse do I have now?.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that after accelerating from a stop light, the vehicle jerked forward and then stalled. After restarting the engine, the vehicle continued to jerk and decelerate. The vehicle would not accelerate beyond 10 mph. The check engine light constantly illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there were no recalls or warranties covering the failure. They offered no other assistance. The failure mileage was 69,000.

6 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2011

Car accelerated unexpectedly, to the point of having to hold the brake while the tires were still spinning in the gravel. After this the dashboard wrench and check engine light came on. Car also stopped while in traffic several times. After taking car to Ford dealership for service, we were told the throttle body was malfunctioning and caused this problem. While the car is still under warranty we were advised this part was not covered under the warranty at a cost of $700. 00 to us. We have no problem with the dealership, our problem is with Ford motor company. Why is there no recall!! this is a dangerous situation.

7 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2011

I drive a 2006 Ford Freestyle. I would like to report that when the car has been running and it is a hot day when placed in reverse it will accelerate on it's own and then the motor will die causing the check engine light to come one. Typically if I turn it off and wait a few minutes it will come back on light free, but there has been two occasions when it has not. The first I took it for a diagnostics where I was told to take it to Ford that it seemed to be a transmission issue, Ford told me that they were not sure but they cleared out the sensor to give it a good wash if it happened again. It has happened again only this time the engine dying to acceleration ration has increased and a good car wash has not helped the issue. I am becoming very concerned before the acceleration was only in reverse now it is occurring in drive as well and happening more frequently. I have plans to take it to my local Ford dealership however I do not have high hopes for answers as they were not all that helpful the first time.

8 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

Car suddenly accelerates on its own. Happens in very hot weather, a/c on, in idle, no contact is being made with accelerator pedal, car stalls, when restarted engine light and wrench lights are on and car does not run properly. Feels like it is in first gear and doesn't go above 60mph.

9 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph the vehicle stalled. Upon restart, the vehicle operated as normal. A check engine light was also illuminating on the instrument panel upon restart. The contact also stated that the vehicle was experiencing a recurring failure in which it would momentarily surge forward. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000. The VIN was unavailable. Updated 08/01/lj.

10 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

When stopping or taking off car surges whether your backing up or at a stop light. They said it was the throttle body, check engine light on when stopped at red light can only inch forward.

11 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2010

I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle with 52,000 miles on it. Last summer, it began lurching when stopped or moving slowly. It continued to get worse until last week when it began doing it so badly, the vehicle just died. When it was restarted, the check engine light was on and the vehicle was running very rough. I drove to autozone and the two engine codes were p0106 and p0109. They erased them and following the Ford Freestyle forums, I purchased some throttle-body cleaner. Once home, I cleaned the throttle body and it seems to have helped the issue, although it still is surging some. It's crystal clear that Ford needs to honor this issue as a recall and not expect me to pay $700 at the dealer to have it fixed.

12 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2010

When car is in drive and or reverse it accelerates on its own. It lunges forward then stalls out. The wrench light appears and now the engine light is on. This was happening a year ago and I took it in and the dealer couldn't find the problem. It is doing it again. It is very dangerous because it happens at stoplights stop signs and when I am pulling out of driveways.

13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2010

We have a 2006 Ford Freestyle. My husband noted vehicle has been lurching when put in drive, then while backing up car stalled 4 times. Engine light and yellow wrench light came on. Dealer states it is throttle sensor. Car has less then 48,000 miles on it.

14 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

I have a Ford Freestyle 2006. The car has acted funny in the summer with the airconditioning on for a couple of years, but I never dealt with it. Now the car has 98000 miles on it, the engine light and wrench light has come on. The care constantly surgers forward and backward especially with the airconditioning on. This is a safety issue for my family in the car as well as the other people around me when driving. I have made an appointment with the dealership to have this looked at, but after reading the complaints on line, it sounds as though I may be out of luck. This is our only family car and what are we to do if the parts are not available for over a month? Ford it is your responsibility to have safe cars and good quality people can rely on. This problem needs to be recalled and fixed for all the people out there who own Freestyles.

15 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2009

When placed in reverse the auto would surge without warning, as if the fuel pedal were applied. This also did it when going from reverse to forward. Had to keep foot firmly on the brake at all times or risk an accident. Car became very difficult to drive when this occurred. At 80,472 miles. Engine check light stayed on after another surge problem that stalled the auto. Ray skillman Ford in greenwood, in determined it was the "throttle body". It was replaced and while the service man drove the car, the entire a/c unit went out. They put a new clutch & compressor. After calling several Ford dealerships, there has been a huge backorder of these throttle body's. Capital city Ford is installing two a day the same with ray skillman Ford.

16 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2009

My 2006 Ford Freestyle first started to surge a couple of years after we got it(approx 2009) I reset it (as was explained in the manual) no major issue-I thought. It surged mostly while the ac was on,when it was hot and sometimes in reverse. After awhile I made allowances for this issue. My car was taken to the mechanic periodically for maintenance w/ no other (new or major mechanical) issues over the next few years. This past summer-2012(it has continued to surge(worse than before)) it also stalled a couple of times. My car was taken in and the throttle body was cleaned(I continued to experience problems all through the summer). It is now December and since September, my car has now stalled out 4 times! the most recent was the day after it was checked by a mechanic. The panel light for the drivetrain illuminates for awhile as well as the check engine light. My car just got a new alternator this past week and stalled on the freeway. All these years I have taken the advice of the forums while communicating with my mechanic to rectify the annoying and dangerous issues. I have not written before because I didn't take this problem as seriously as I should have. I have two young children and do not like stalling out on the streets. If this problem is so prevalent, why doesn't Ford just recall it and take accountability for their faulty car?!.

17 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2009

This happened 3 times before they were able to do anything at the Ford dealership because the lights would be off by the time I was able to reach the dealership, and their response was always technician was unable to duplicate symptom. While driving at 50mph on the interstate there was an intermittent idle surge while driving and then a loud "clunking" noise and then the transmission lost power and the vehicle crawled to a halt. There was no acceleration even though the engine revved up. The steering wheel became difficult to maneuver so I was unable to even get it into the emergency lane. I was stuck in the middle lane of the interstate with my child in the car. The check engine light, the wrench light for the cvt transmission, and the passenger air bag light also came on. I had to turn the car off, put it in park, and then restart the car, when I reached the dealership they were finally able to retrieve several fault codes. They performed an r&r transmission and overhaul. This happened 2 other times at (77004 miles, after shifting into park at 0 mph. They replaced a faulty throttle body for this repair- and then at 77238 miles-they replaced the alternator for this repair). It's beginning to happen again. This was and still is a dangerous situation. I now have 3 kids. I thank god we weren't struck from behind while driving on the interstate. I am terrified to drive the vehicle to long distance locations or drive on any parkway, highway, or interstate because it took a while for the vehicle to start up long enough to get it to the dealership that was only 4 miles away.
