Have been having ongoing problem with car lunging, sudden acceleration especially when stopped. Today it started and a warning light came on but went away when I turned the car off. Later it started surging very badly again and I put fuel cleaner in the tank when I filled it up. A few hours later I was stopped at a stop sign and it surged and moved forward a few feet and died in the road. I will be contacting a Ford dealer in the morning but when I got online to research the problem I found several complaints about similar problems that was being related to the throttle body(cleaned, replaced).

While backing out of a parking spot the car attempted to accelerate while my foot was on the brake pedal. This car has done a similar thing six additional times since the first incident. Things common to the incidents were that the engine was at idle speed or just above, warm outside temperature with a/c on, steering wheel being turned in 6 of 7 incidents. Electronic throttle apparently receives signal to apply too much power. Was told at dealership that adding injector cleaner with each tank of gas may help, but it has not. Replacement throttle bodies are not available and have a lead time of many months. Will a new replacement be a modified design? I'd take a mechanical throttle body any day over this mess. This is a threat to property and life. I will not allow my wife to drive this car as I feel it would be inviting a crash. Car is also not very marketable if you're trying to sell in hot weather with a demo drive while a/c is on.

I filled up my gas tank on November 6, 2008. Thirty minutes later, while driving, my gas gauge dropped to empty and the fuel warning light came on. I was so frightened by this, so I do not know if anything else on the instrument panel was affected. My son was screaming at me to pull over and stop, but there was nowhere to stop. On November 7, I took my vehicle to the dealership to explain the problem. I have owned my Freestyle for 3 years and 4 months. It only has 28,405 miles on it. I also have the new basecare extended warranty. They charged me $94. 00 for the diagnostics. I was told the fuel sensor is bad. It will cost $400. 00 to replace it, and the extended warranty does not cover it. I had to refuse this costly job. I am troubled that the Freestyle has a defective fuel sensor, and even more upset that the extended warranty is useless.
