Me and my wife carpool on third shift to our jobs. Upon backing out of the driveway in reverse, the wrench light came on, and an error reading" failsafe engine mode". I was able to make it to work, however I couldn't go fast at all no more than maybe 40. I'm seeing online many with this year and model need or have had new throttle body's put in with no luck coming from it. I'm hoping there's a recall because I have two children and a wife to get around in this one car. I wanna know what the recall is on it if one at all is available. Why haven't they corrected it yet after all these years of problems and so many complaints?.

Vehicle lurches when brakes are applied in forward and reverse. Happened many times. The wrench indicator light came on also when this happened. This happened many times when we first purchased the vehicle. I checks threads on the internet and saw this as a common problem. I personally cleaned the throttle body as shown on youtube by a gentleman and it fixed the problem for awhile. This happened recently to my wife as she was leaving her work parking lot at low speed. Lurched when put in gear with brakes applied. Car felt uncontrollable. We see that an investigation on this problem has begun so I would confer with other vehicle owners. More times and dates than I can remember that lurching has taken place. One time I had to slip it into neutral to stop the car and apply the brakes.

After quickly crossing traffic and entering my driveway (which is on a downward slope) I released the gas on entering my driveway and applied the brake. Just before applying the brake the vehicle lurched. It didn't lurch far, but enough for me to rapidly depress the brake pedal in surprise. One item of note--the low fuel indicator was on and my next stop was to get gas.
2005 Ford Freestyle lunging forward, stalling out, and check engine light wrench icon light coming on. It was dangerous to be on the road because of the sudden stopping, and very pore excelleration. After several tries at reading codes discovered it was a bad throttle body. I noticed all of the complaints that were posted on line about this same vehicle and discovered your investigation opened in 2011. Repairs were made by myself at the cost of $608. 00. Also, I noticed the new replacement part had an engineering change that elimanated the anti freeze heater section. I feel something should be done about this problem by recalling the throttle body system used in this Ford vehicle. I also was informed by the service center at the Ford dealership, where I purchased the throttle body ,that this part was common to be replaced. Thank you for looking into this issue.
Vehicle will not start. Dealership claimed that the throttle body needs to be replace along with a computer update to a tune of $800+. Various posts have been found on the internet regarding a known defect with this this model year's throttle body including a "lunging issue" caused by this failed component. I would like this issue to be investigated and Ford to be responsible for the replacement and remedy of this defective component.
We purchased the 2007 Ford Freestyle only one month ago from a dealer in blair nebraska who certified that there were no problems with the vehicle purchased. We have not owned this vehicle for more than a month. While driving today with the family (children included) down the freeway the vehicle stopped accelerating in the center of heavy traffic. Lucky no accident was caused! the vehicle started lurching and then would not go over 25 mph. We are understanding that there are several complaints about this vehicle performing the same way with many others in class action and forums.

My 2006 Ford Freestyle is absolutely the worst made car I have ever owned! throttle body problem. . . 50,000 miles, check! ac compressor goes bad. . . . 60,000 miles, check! and now beginning at 79,000 miles the cvt transmission is trashed! $6000 to fix and you can't even get a new one! I drove it knowing it would go bad another 3000+ miles because I was destined to spend a lot of money either way. The mechanic actually suggested I trade it in when it began. Would that have been fair to whomever bought it? these are all common early mileage problems with the Freestyles! there are numerous posts about other owners with the same problems, especially these three and there are a couple more that fortunately I have dodged to this point. What is Ford going to do? just let those of us who bought Freestyles with cvt suffer. What about the fact that you stopped using the cvt transmission on the taurus x? why? I think we know based on the numerous cvt failures at such low mileage. But not low enough to be covered by warranty.
On several occasions while I was driving in route to work or the grocery store, my 06 Ford Freestyle seemed slow and sluggish to respond as I would be waiting at a red light for the green. When the light did turn green and I would press the gas pedal to go, the car would shut off. A few times there were close calls as the car behind me would be unaware I was having trouble and almost rear-end me. When the car would cut off, I would proceed to restart the car and then press the gas to go. The car seemed to respond extremely slow like I would have the gas pedal pressed to the floor and would only be able to go 20 - 25 mph. On other occasions, the car would seem to lurch forward or backward (depending on if I had the car in drive or reverse) the throttle body failure on my 2006 Ford Freestyle creates a very dangerous situation because the engine will accelerate without applying the gas pedaland will no accelerate at times when the gas pedal is pressed. After a little research I found this to be arecurring problem on 2006, and 2007 Ford Freestyle vehicles. Ford is or should be well aware the proble exist and has for some time and has done nothing about it , to add insult to injury my car has been at the Ford dealership for over a month because the parts needed to repair it [ throttlebody ] is not availiable and no one can tell me for sure when it will be people at Ford tell me that the company making the part went out of bussiness without notice, well needless to say this does not help my situation, I have notified my state and federal highway safety commishners of the problem and I would like to ask everyone with a similar problem to do the same.
Vehicle surges while in reverse and while in drive at stop lights or when backing out of a parking space. Have came close to surging out into the intersection and almost surged out into the path of another car in a parking lot.
On the date noted, I was stopped at a traffic light with my foot on the brake when the car suddenly lurched forward (maybe 6-9 inches). I turned the corner to enter a parking garage and while stopped with my foot on the brake, the car lurched forward again, this time the car stalled. I restarted it pulled forward to the garage gate and stopped. It lurched a third time, stalling again and then the service engine light came on. I can best describe it as though I released the clutch (on a manual shift car) with my foot on the brake and not the accelerator. In such a situation, the car will lurch and stall. However this is an automatic and the reason the clutch would engage is from acceleration. I recall the motor revving up prior to the lurch which would explain the event. The Ford dealership finally narrowed the problem to the throttle body and the electronics attached to it and required replacement ($700+). I would say this event occurred at least 6 times in the past year, always while the car was stopped but never 3 times in succession. It stalled maybe two of those times, entered 'engine failsafe mode' but was fine after re-starting the engine. I researched this occurrence on the internet finding it to be an issue on many occasions with this model vehicle. There are several reports on your website as well. I see the investigation is still open. I noted one report referencing a design flaw as to the release of gases in the throttle body and how they are re-routed back throught the body. The service rep at the dealer noted to me that the new body installed on my car was a new design where the gases are released away from the body. I take this as acknowledgement that the original design was flawed, leading to its unsafe behavior. Note that this last event occurred in 90+ degree weather with the ac on and after highway driving for 3 hours.
Car at a complete stop with foot off gas petals moves forward unexpectedly and rpms jump to 2000.
2007 awd Ford Freestyle. Lunges forward, revs up on it's own, completely stalls out. Have learned it is the throttle body. Ford knows about this and there is no recall. Why? this is very dangerous to anyone driving this car. There is a facebook page dedicated to people in my position. Cars stalling out on highway, on railroad tracks. Mine died in an intersection. The problem is much worse when hot out and air conditioning is on high. Why isn't Ford doing anything about this? who has over $1,000 to fix this problem? why is our safety not important enough to recall this car?.
Our 2006 Ford Freestyle lost power and began to surge irraticly. The vehicle then lost power and would not advance as if the transmission had gone out. The wrench symbol and the check engine light came on. We pulled over and shut the vehicle off. Restarting the vehicle helped the wrench light go away but the engine light remained on. Our local dealership has diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttlebody. The part was unavailable but was reassurred we could still drive the car. We started home and the problem re-occurred. Our car surged and then lost power. We were stranded on hwy 95 in 116 degree heat. Once we got home I started looking at the numerous complaints that Ford Freestyles have recieved on 2005-2007 models. We are currently waiting on the dealership to find a replacement throttlebody and schedule a repair. The car seems very unsafe when this problem occurs and Ford recommends replacing it with the same defective part.
My 2006 Ford Freestyle surges anytime it is in idle with the ac on. If placed in park with ac on it surges once placed into gear. I have written Ford and they passsed the buck to you. This has occured multiple times and continues to occur everytime I drive for more than 10 min. Consequences: multiple times I have come within inches of rear ending another car. . . One time it pushed me into on-coming traffic. . . I am waiting for you all to hold Ford accountable and make them recall the frestyle as this a defect and there is already a class action suit filed against them for this. . . I wonder how many people will have to be seriously injured or die for you all to pay attention.
Car lurches usually when putting it into drive or reverse. Last week it lurched into oncoming traffic while pulling out of sonic drive-in, then it lost power scaring the bejesus out of the whole family. Fortunately traffic was able to stop in time for us to limp out of the way. Took it to a dealership they said the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. Got to checking and it appears to be a re-occurring theme with this car. Worried if I spend the $500-$900 to have it repaired it will do it again down the road in a year or two or 30,000 miles.
For about 2 months I had been experiencing some minor surging when car was put into reverse but thought it might have been bad gas or needed a new fuel or air filter. First major incident was in August when I started my car and put in reverse to back out of parking space. Before I took my foot off the brake, the car accellerated backwards and then stalled suddenly. This happened at least 3 times while I was in the parking lot before the car finally began to work properly and I could drive it home again. Both wrench and check engine lights were on.
My 2005 Ford Freestyle lunges forward when putting it in drive or reverse. It started a couple of months ago and would only happen once in a while. Now it happens almost every day. If your not careful you will hit something. Even with your foot on the brake the vehicle will still lunge forward or backward. The problem is worse if the air conditioner is running. I have been told the throttle body is causing the problem but it will cost over $800. 00 to fix. I cannot afford this repair and think Ford should fix it under a recall due to this being a serious safety problem.
Lunging & cutting off. Vehicle would occasionally lunge & required braking to keep it stationary. Begin cutting off recently. Would restart, run a few minutes and cut off again. Carried to Ford dealer on 02/09/11 and problem was diagnosed as a malfunctioning fuel system throttle body.
The car often lungs, revs up, without warning or having your foot on the accelerator. It seems to be getting more consistant. It does not matter if the ac is on or not.
Intially noted the vehicles rpms jump and a quick surge in the engine while traveling approximately 65mphs. This continued to occur radomly at different speeds on several occasions. A service light came on. They replaced an egr valve. Put in an fuel treatment. One day later the the light is back on and condition has gotten worse. Now the car lunges forward, still randomly, but frequently! have been very fortunate that there has not been any major incidents or accidents, yet!(just ran up a curb) read this is a common condition and is being investigated. I hope something comes of the investigation and soon. This is very alarming and dangerous! today I had the most precious cargo with me. . . . My daughter(who was driving and is currently outraged) and my grandchildren!!!!!.
I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle and when ever I drive it it accelerates when your stopped at stop signs, traffic lights, coasting through parking lots, etc. I have just recently hit the car in front of me while waiting at a traffic light I was slowing down to stop when the car accelerated causing the car to lunge forward hitting the car in front of me before I had time to stop. This has become very dangerous. I took it to a Ford dealer with no results. I called the Ford mfg. And they told me they were aware of the problem but nothing was being done about it. I have ask several owners of the Freestyle about this and they said they were having the same problem. I have checked on the internet and found complaint after complaint about this problem and the high cost of trying to fix it. I have went to several repair shops with no guarantees. The Ford dealer I took it to charged me $140. 00 then told me there was nothing wrong with the car. I feel this should be something the Ford motor CO. Should be recalling. Thank you.
My vehicle surges from time to time and when the air condition is on the car will cut of and go into fail safe mode ive cleaned the throttle body and the problem still accurs.
Vehicle surged forward while parking and backward while exiting parking space. Has continued to occur since.
2006 Ford Freestyle lungs forward or reverse when car is put in drive or reverse and break ir released it will set a orange wrench indicator that can be reset by shuting off car this is very dangerous in parking lots have nearly hit other cars.
At a slow speed in either forward or reverse when I put my foot on the brake the engine speeds up and the car lunges forward or backwards and I have to hit the brake hard to stop it. This has happened several times and seems to be happening more often now. A couple of times the engine seeded up while the car was in park I see where Ford brushes the problem off as being minor. I think this is a dangerous thing and should be corrected. If it happens while you are parallel parking it can cause an accident . Also when backing out of a parking space you could get into an accident. With over 200 complaints I think something should be done before someone is seriously injured from this defect by Ford.
While backing out of a parking space, the engine surged as if I had hit the accelerator. I immediately hit the brakes and the same thing happened several more times before I had a new throttle body installed at the Ford dealership and was told that it was becoming a common problem with the Freestyle. My son who has a 2007 Freestyle had the same thing happen several months ago and had the same repair done to his.
First sign was when leaving a mall parking space; placed car into reverse to back up, motor surged and car leaped backwards unexpectedly nearly striking a passing car and pedestrians. Put transmission into'd' to pull back into space and transmission dash indicator illuminated and the car died. Various iterations of restarting the engine, putting the car in gear and then either surging under full power or dying until we got to an auto parts store to see if they could read any codes for the problem. The shop was very nice but unable to determine anything conclusive so we limped along to the nearest Ford dealership where we learned the throttlebody had failed.
Car accelerated unexpectedly, to the point of having to hold the brake while the tires were still spinning in the gravel. After this the dashboard wrench and check engine light came on. Car also stopped while in traffic several times. After taking car to Ford dealership for service, we were told the throttle body was malfunctioning and caused this problem. While the car is still under warranty we were advised this part was not covered under the warranty at a cost of $700. 00 to us. We have no problem with the dealership, our problem is with Ford motor company. Why is there no recall!! this is a dangerous situation.
My 2007 Ford Freestyle lurches at idle. It also cuts off when the air conditionoing is running and I turn the wheel sharply.
I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle I pulled off the interstate stopped at a stop sign when I went to pull away the car lunged forward almost hitting another car and died 3 times the check engine light came on. I went to pull back on the interstate and had no power had my foot to the floor and could barely get to 30 mph. I am an automotive tech took the car to work and pulled the codes po61b internal control torque calculation and p2106 throttle control system. After researching the codes I found that alot of people have experienced the same problem with the same codes and had to replace the throttle body. I am replacing the throttle body but realize this is a common and dangerous problem that Ford is not taking care of or even acknowledging there is a problem. Knowing that the throttle bodies were on back order not long ago means to me they are in big demand so there must be a problem.
The vehicle surges when at idle. Commonly happens when backing up or moving forward slowly (ie, in a parking lot or driving into a garage). Because this is occurring at idle speeds so far my foot has been either on the brake or close to the brake to prevent an accident. However this will also happen if in a traffic jam or slow moving traffic situations (ie, dropping the kids off a school, slowing down due to pedestrian traffic, etc). I have discussed with the dealer the issue and they are ignorant to the problem.
My 2005 Ford Freestyle lunges when placed in drive or reverse, it happens before the accelerator is pressed and I must stomp the brake to stop it. I have had many close calls in the past two weeks. Today a "fail safe engine mode" message came on.
The vehicle's engine cut out after a stop several times, when restarted, vehicle behavior was erratic during acceleration. Dealer determined the electric throttle body was bad and replaced the component.
My 2007 Ford Freestyle will lunge in forward and reverse. It stalled last night when it was in reverse and this happened. It is happening more often. This is very frightening and could easily cause an accident.
We have an 2005 Freestyle. My wife was picking up our grandson from vacation bible school on 7/19/2011. The car lunged forward and almost ran over some other kids crossing over the road in front of her. The crossing guard frantically waved his arms for my wife to stop which she was trying to do. By luck the engine died. Someone is going to die from this yet and then Ford will have a big lawsuit on there hands with thousands of people on the side of the plaintif. I can't understand Ford's position on this issue since they are rated highly for quality. They had the publics support when they didn't take a bailout . Why damage a good reputation?.
