7 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Frame rusted through.

8 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2014

Vehicle has exhibited severe frame and underbody rust for several years; during last inspection mechanic cautioned that vehicle was badly rusted but still able to pass inspection. I visually inspected the vehicle this evening and found severe delamination to frame members and severe rusting of bed underframe. Crossmember supporting bed is rusted through or non-existent in approximately 40% of surface area. Shock absorber mounts, leaf spring mounts, fuel tank supports, and fuel lines significantly rusted. Approximately one year ago rear brake lines failed at low speed and vehicle nearly collided with parked cars and adjancent stone wall. Mechanic attributed brake failure to rust through of rear brake system. Vehicle was purchased new and is still owned by original owner. Vehicle has been maintained since new and properly cared for.

9 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

The frame and only the frame is rusted out.

10 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

Not really an incident, more of a complaint. We bought a 2000 Ranger approximately a year ago. The spare tire was missing and we found out why. The spare tire winch assembly was a block of rust and the sheet metal that made up the holder that the carrier was attached to is so severely rotted that it could not possibly even hold a tire. The sheet metal mentioned is a structural part of the rear frame and it has major rot and should probably be replaced. My son needed a spare tire so since there was no holder he put it in the bed. When he put it in the bed in bounced to the right and put a large hole in the side of the bed just behind the cab. We started to check out the rest of the bed only to find out that it was so rusted that it was literally stating to crumble in spots. While checking it out we put several more holes in the floor of the bed and the sides just by poking around with a screwdriver. The bed is a stepside and there is no metal left under the steps at all, if you were to step on either side you would crack the fiberglass sides. We are now in the process of having to replace the bed. All of the bolts had to be cut out due to the rust. Once we got the bed off we were shocked to see that the frame was covered top to bottom with rust. I have restored older trucks in the past some from the 40's and I have never encountered rust like I have seen on this one, it almost looks like there was no paint on it from the factory at all. We are still in the process of wire brushing the frame so we can spray a rust converter and try to repaint the frame. I have read several other complaints regarding the rust on these trucks and firmly believe that Ford should be held accountable just like Toyota was when they had a similar situation involving rusted frames on their trucks. Trust me I am a die hard Ford fan but I bought this for my son and I am very disappointed.

11 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

Vehicle has severe frame rust. Recently rear bumper fell off due to frame deterioration. Bumper brackets had nothing to secure to. More recently, one of the straps holding the gas tank broke away from the frame due to severe deterioration of the frame. I had to improvise a restraint strap since a replacement would do no good since the frame connection area was rotted thru. Leaf spring brackets are on the verge of separation from the frame, again due to severe frame deterioration. The exterior body and interior are in good condition. For a 2000 vehicle to have this serious of a frame problem has to be the result for poor material and/or material rust proofing. Found numerous complaints by other 2000 Ranger owners for similar issues.

12 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

Rear bumper broke away from the frame. When investigating found the frame where the rear bumper attaches to as well as the spare tire is completely rotted away. Exterior body is in excellent shape but the frame is badly rusted from front to back. I am scare to continue driving the vehicle or fear of a catastrophic failure of the frame. Can not repair to reattach the bumper because there is literally no sound metal left on the frame to weld to.

13 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2013

I am the 2nd owner of this truck. First owner kept truck pristine, washed every weekend regardless of weather. It was spotless except for rotten front bumper. Ten months later a foot and half of frame badly rotten. I wired up rear bumper and kept it that way until I had the money for a frame weld. Bought steel to do this. It was like this for a long while and rot did not spread. Last December truck was in an accident. I was not there. A friend was driving. She was at a full stop waiting at a light and was rear-ended. I later looked at the truck and it seemed easily repairable to me. Only passenger fender wrinkled. I would make a wooden bed. When I finally got through the insurance hassles and my mechanic received my truck in 2/ 2015. I had to wait to do anything with it. When my mechanic and I looked it over the frame was rusted badly and cracked up by the cab. Crack appeared to predate the accident. I'm not sure if you can help me.

15 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2012

I own a 2000 Ford Ranger with with a badly rusted frame problem,Ford denies the problem,it started when I went to get my first inspection after I bought it used in 2012,I never noticed that it had a bad frame as the truck was in beatiful condition,I went to sears for my inspection and they found a rusted frame part which I had to have welded but now after goin into the 4th rotted frame problem (gas tank straps) and a rear tire holder rusted through I am totaly discusted, this should not happen as I have owned vehecals all my life and never ran into a problem like this, that gas tank could of fallen out and caused my life as well as others. I am not the only one with this Ford problem, there are many many Ford owners that have this problem. Toyota recalled there frame problems but who is payin off Ford to keep there problems quiet,I am on disabilty and now this December its gonna cost me another 800$ to get this fixed and I have allready paid a hefty sum to get the other frame repairs done, last year I needed shackles and the garage could not do it until I had new braces welded because the frame was paper thin so they could not install shackles, can you help, this is a serious safety issue and who knows maybe the frame could split while I am driving down the road, thanks in advance, william vaughn.

16 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

While driving I heard a clunking noise in the rear of the vehicle I looked to see the frame had rusted through in at least two places, the shock absorber upper mount had rusted off. The gas tank straps mounts were about to fail. I had replaced the gas tank feeder tube that had corroded off the year before. The truck body is still in very good condition but the frame appears to be gone. The truck has seen very light duty and has never been used off road. Since that time I have found many of the same occurrences on the internet.

17 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2012

While pulling into my driveway the rear bumper fell off. After getting under the vehicle I found the frame to be rusted from the furthest point back to the axle area. Looking into it more I found the cross member to be rusted to the point that it is ready to fall off. The gas tank holding straps are rusted from the frame, not sure what's holding the gas tank in place. The spare tire holder is rusted and ready to come off. I removed the spare a placed it in the bed for now. The bed and its mounts are shot, the bed can be picked up a good two inches off the frame. Basically the truck is nothing but rust from the cab back. I was lucky when the bumper fell off 1/2 hour earlier I was traveling on a state highway at speeds of 60-65 mph. I have looked at other Rangers the same year and found some worse and some with no rust what so ever. Whats up? and is Ford aware of the problem and are they going to do anything about it. Who would have gotten sued if my bumper had fallen and killed someone?.

18 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

Ford Ranger frame rusting. Brake line broke and it was discovered that crossmember connection of frame had rusted so badly that gas tank was only being held on by one also badly rusted strap. Cannot purchase new or used frame that will fit our truck and we've only owned 1 1/2 years. Cannot sell it or drive it. It is totally unsafe to do anything with. Paid $10,000 and its down the drain.

22 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2011

I own a 2000 Ford Ranger, in short the frame has rusted and broke causing loss of brakes and total loss of the use of the truck! apparently this is not the first complaint of this type and I think Ford motor company should have to make it good , the truck is in great shape with less than 100,000 miles!.

23 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2010

Vehicle: 2000 Ford Ranger 4wd. Has been well-maintained and garage-kept since purchased new. Have noticed significant rust on all parts of frame. This year, mechanic said rear spring shackles needed replaced because they had rusted through. When trying to replace shackles, mechanic noted complete rust-through of frame, including several large holes. A piece of angle iron was fabricated and bolted to the frame and shackle bolted through the plate. Mechanic said other parts of frame are rusting badly and it's "only a matter of time" before the truck is unsafe. Both the mechanic and the owner of the repair shop said that this problem is very common to Ford Rangers. In the last two years, brake line was replaced and spare tire apparatus was removed, both due to rust-through. If this problem is "very common" to Ford Rangers and not to other vehicles, why hasn't there been a recall? mileage at time of frame repair: 91,071.

24 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

Frame is extremely rusted with holes and major stress cracks I am afraid that the frame will break when driving and for should fix this.

25 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

My 2000 Ford Ranger supercab has a badly rusted frame. I recently was under the vehicle to do exhaust work when I noticed that the frame is rusted through at the rear leaf spring support shackle. Also, the frame support for the rear bumper is rusted and the frame is split. I brought photos of the frame to a local Ford dealer who acknowledged that the frame was compromised but stated that Ford did not have a recall or any remediation program for this problem. In short, the truck has only 109,000 miles on it and is now not safe to be on the road and is only worth scrape value. I would hope to see Ford directed to check the extent of this problem and be require to make repairs.

26 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Ranger. While driving at unknown speeds, the contact observed an unusual clunking noise. The vehicle was taken to a repair facility where it was diagnosed that the frames were rusted and could not be replaced due to the severity of the failure. The mechanic advised the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was contacted but would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 65,000.

27 Frame Rust problem

29 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2009

Noticed excessive rust through on frame rear at spring hanger.

30 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2008

I first noticed a squeaking noise and while investigating I found that my trucks frame is totally rusted and has cracked on both sides at the rear wheels. The truck is a 2000 Ford Ranger with excellent body integrity and little other rust. Both my mechanic and the tow truck operator said they had never seen anything like this. Both said that I could have been killed or killed others if the frame snapped. The tow operator said that Toyota's having a "silent recall" of trucks 1995-2000 with the same problem. I now have a truck with no warranty that is undriveable but has an outstanding loan against it. Ford is not addressing this issue.
