1999 Ford Ranger. . . . Left rear tire blow out on freeway. . . When tire exploded it lifted the rear of the truck up and it started to spin counter clockwise when I tried to keep it straight by turning to the right it changed lanes immediately and I was in front of 2 semi trucks I went under one of them with the bed/rear of truck. I later learned the tire had also pulled the parking brake cable out of the backing plate causing the left wheel to lock completely. . . The park brake cables need enclosed somehow so the tire cannot apply the brakes. . . . . The rear of the truck isn't heavy enough during a blow out to keep the rear end down. . . . . . . . . . I had seen this happen to a Ford explorer where the left rear tire blew and it lifted up 1 to 2 feet turned sideways changed lanes and was hit by a car t-boning it hard. . . . . . . If nitrogen was used instead of air they may not explode like they do. . . . . . My tires were good condition from pep boys bought by myself. . . . . . . . . . I didn't expect to survive this accident. . . . . Some people will not!!!!!!!!!.

1. No warning or event. 2. Parking brake cable sheared off by leaf spring. Happened when truck was loaded with 700 lbs in bed of truck ( within rated capacity ). Resulting in loss of parking brakes and possible runaway vehicle. 3. Replaced broken cable but failure will happen again unless the cable guide is modified to prevent the spring from chopping into the cable ( needs raised an inch ).

When releasing the parking brake during wet conditions the linings stick to the drums, this is especially a problem in the winter months as they will freeze. This also causes the brakes to be extremely sensitive during the first 5 miles (approx) of braking. When the vehicle service brakes are applied the rear wheel grab hard and the abs tries to release them and can't. I have had two faults on the abs due to this. This is not a one time thing this happens so frequently that during wet/freezing conditions I actually use a 4x4 wood block to hold the vehicle in place. .
I was parked in my driveway, when I reached to release the parking brake. As I pulled the release handle, the bracket and release handle fell onto the parking brake pedal; upon inspection, I noticed that the bolts for the bracket had fallen out without my knowledge. I attempted to put the bolts back in, but only one of them would go back into place, and that one only lasted for a short time.

1999 Ford Ranger emergency brake will not release in cold weather; hard to release the rear wheels at other times. The first time this happened was in Feb 2004. The emergency brake cable was replaced as was the rear brake drum and pads. The heat caused a breakdown of the brake fluid causing the repair facility to replace the fluid, one month after I had done this. Vehicle was purchased used in 2004.
Emergency brake cables that run together by the rear end, have rubbed together to the point of warring through the sheathing. This has started to cause the rear emergency brakes to stick when the emergency brake is released after being set. I think this could be come a big safety concern down the road, by either failing to work, or release. It's a poor design on Fords part and could be a serious accident waiting to happen thanks for your time. Also what's up with the engine pan gasket Ford used on this truck mine is leaking badly and I've heard most of them do. Are there any recalls? thanks again stev anderson.

The windshield wipers failed and when the brakes were applied, the vehicle failed to stop properly and acted as if the brakes were manual, the brakes had to be pumped before the truck stopped. The vehicle was in the shop previously because the emergency brake failed to release.
Consumer stated when the emergency parking brake is applied, the brake will lock up, and at times had to reverse vehicle far enough so that emergency brake pawl could release. . Consumer stated vehicle was returned to dealer twice, an accident occurred after the second return, the dealer ordered a new cable for left rear brake, the new cable was not installed until after the vehicle rolled out of the yard striking a tree.
Emergency brake handle/control pulled out and was loose on several occasions required replacement due to the screws pulling out from weak metal. Mjs.
Parking brake was checked twice and dealer claims it is normal. Pedal has to be pushed to last click (to the floor) to prevent vehicle from rolling backwards on any gradient, including slight. Dealer also states that vehicle should be parked in gear in order to prevent rolling backwards.
