3 Structure problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 02/22/2013

Rear of truck is rotting away to nothing. Had the rear of the frame plated a few years ago where the shackle brackets bolt on. Now I noticed one of the fuel tank straps hanging. The crossmember that holds it is rotted away to nothing. Took the truck to my mechanic. He called me after about an hour & told me the truck was junk. The whole frame & crossmembers from the cab back are rusted horribly. He told me not to even drive the truck because it wasn't safe.

4 Structure problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

2001 Ford Ranger. Consumer writes in regards to defective tire mount. The consumer stated the full sized spare tire on the truck, was mounted under the cargo bed. It was being held in place by a stranded steel cable, one end of which was attached to a swaged steel fitting which went through the central hole of the spare, the other end to a winch which lowered and raised the spare. Recently while driving, the consumer heard a thump and saw the spare tire had fallen out of its storage place and was sitting in the roadway behind him. When he inspected the mechanism, he found the swaged joint between the steel fitting and the cable had corroded and failed. Fortunately, when the failure occurred he was driving at a slow speed through a parking lot and no damage was done.

5 Structure problem of the 2010 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 01/20/2013

I have a extang encore tonneau cover on my 2010 Ford Ranger that flew backwards while driving down the road damaging the rear fiberglass panel. The front latch assembly has a poor design in which water drains down inside of the latch assembly and freezes and ice builds up. You think the panel is secured when it is not. Extang needs to redesign the latch assembly to prevent water from getting inside the latch assembly. When I contacted extang they said they haven't had anyone else complain about this. They sent me a new plastic washer and o-ring for the latch but water still drains into the assembly.

8 Structure problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

2001 Ford Ranger with 86866k. In around sept 2010 I heard a thump and banging from the back. Upon home I looked under I saw that the shackle mount rotted and broke on the driver side. The passanger side did not break but not fair any better then the one that broke. I bought the shackle and the shackle mounts. After I removed the shackle mount on the passanger side I saw rot through the frame as well heavy flaking rust thro-out the entire frame. I called Ford and they said in a nut shell too bad.

9 Structure problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT with excessive rust / rot on the frame. I have had to replace both frame ends with new steel as they had rotted away causing the rear bumper to fall off the truck. I also had to buy and replace new leaf spring mounts because the old ones had rotted away. I am now wondering if I can repair or replace other segments of the frame because there is excessive rust and rot in certain areas. The majority of the problem seems to be the rear half of the frame, both sides. I do not see any excessive rust in the forward frame rails. I will have to replace shock mounts, spare tire carrier which rotted off, and the cross members which also rotted off.

10 Structure problem of the 2008 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 06/17/2008

First, with the non-tilting steering wheel located where it is, with a taller person it is difficult-to- impossible to lift the foot off of the gas and transfer it to the brake pedal as the drivers knees ends up impacting the bottom of the steering wheel. This makes it necessary to just do a sort of heel-on-the-floor-foot-tilt-or-slide to go from the gas to the brake without steering wheel/knee interference. This is not a problem in the Fords we have which have tilt steering wheels second, a visual check shows that the brake and gas pedals are close together at nearly the same height. From a step over point of view this should be a good thing, but it results in little feel for where your foot is actually placed when one goes to stop the vehicle by using the heel-to-the-floor-foot-tilt-or-slide method necessitated by the low steering wheel position. This can and does result in pressing both pedals simultaneously. In one day of driving I managed to do the both pedal press three times, any one of which could have resulted in an acceleration into another vehicle object.

11 Structure problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/25/2005

When it rains gallons of water comes through the right front door, though the dashboard, down the floor board. This could result in an electrical system fire. The dealership indicated that this was a common problem with these vehicles. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer would repair the vehicle.

12 Structure problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 11/10/2004

The cab of my 1998 Ford Ranger truck leaks when it rains. At first, I thought it was the seal over the passenger door, but the water is running in the cab above the rear window and the seal is tight on the window. As far as I can tell, the water is getting in along the seam of the cab roof just behind the door on both sides of the cab. The water has found its way up into the felt and roof insulation and left water marks but (thankfully) no separation of the roof felt from the cab body yet. I did use ge silicone caulk to fill in the seams on the outside of the cab, and it did reduce the amount of water getting in, but yesterday it rained and I noticed that the water is still getting in on the passenger side of the cab roof. I really don't know how to fix this problem. I have inspected the door seals and they seem pliable and firmly affixed to the body of the truck. The truck has 61,000 miles on it and I am the only driver. If there is a recall for this, I would really appreciate knowing because the water has resulted in two shorts in the truck's interior lighting causing me to pull the fuse for the interior lights. When the cab gets wet inside, the "door ajar" light stays on and the interior lights will not shut off when l turn the truck off. The removal of the fuse, although giving a remedy to the dome light problem, has made it difficult to drive the truck at night with no interior lights on the floor or dome. Quite frankly, I am concerned about a fire with all this dampness in the cab.

16 Structure problem of the 1996 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

1996 Ford Ranger, 4. 0, standard cab, standard shift, 2whl drive. The accelerator pedal mounting bracket, which is spot welded to the firewall, broke the welds. This left the vehical without the ability to increase speed above idle. Although the bracket had potential fastener holes that lined up with holes in the firewall, the bracket does not bolt on. Refer to Ford cpd 2000 version 15. 04--January 2003, p-29097 item 9a762 for a "blow up" of the item. No accident occured and since I am a mechanic, I drove the vehical home and repaired it myself.

18 Structure problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Running boards are unsafe. They are located too far under the vehicle, making them very awkward and dangerous to use, forcing the occupant to twist their ankle to enter the vehicle. When exiting the vehicle, they are not visible from the interior, forcing the occupant to guess where they are, which makes them useless and dangerous.
