Frame Rust Problems of Ford Ranger - part 1

Hi, I bought my 2011 Ford Ranger sport at a car dealership. I have had it for 3 years, and I pay $340 a month in payments. The company that sold me the truck is netautomobile. It was approx $18,000. I still owe a lot of money on this truck. I found out that the trucks frame is rusted badly, and there is no way to fix this. I take good care of my truck, and love to drive it. It honestly needs to be recalled and fixed. After looking online there are more and more people complaining about the same issue. The rear frame crossmember rusted to the point where the spare tire it supports almost fell out. I noticed it was hanging about 6� low so I caught it before it fell. The entire part is horribly corroded. Note that the wood was temporarily installed to hold the steel up to drive home.

I was driving was about 20 mph and hit a small pot hole. I heard a loud pop bang noise and the left side of truck dropped about 2 or 3 inches. I thought the front end fell off. The frame is rusted so bad you can punch holes is the frame with a screw driver, the driver side torsion bar has collapsed due to rust on the frame that holds it in place, the crossmember to transmission is barley holding transmission up, the spare tire area is rusted in half, all main crossmembers are rusted in half and the frame is rusted in half behind fuel tank. Truck has 127k miles and the body body has little to no rust, upper and lower control arms are unsafe from rust. I do not understand how the body can be so good but frame and suspension is completely rusted to no return.

Rear frame has rusted through. Rear driver side spring mount has rusted and broken from the frame. Rear bumper mounts and spare tire mounts are rusted out. Vehicle was stationary when problem was discovered .

Two years ago, a crunching noise while turning was determined to be that both rear spring brackets had rusted through and broken, leaving the rear of the leaf springs unattached to the frame. Both were replaced without incident. This week, while doing routine maintenance, I noticed the front fuel tank hanger was out of place. Upon examination, one side of the fuel tank hanger was completely disconnected from the frame. The cross member and the hanger for the fuel tank bracket is completely rusted away. The frame has no structural support in that area and nothing is supporting the front of the fuel tank. It is unacceptable that Ford is allowed to produce frames that rust away right under the vehicle so quickly. This truck body looks fine, however, the bed is rusted away in two places and this frame cross member is completely gone.

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at solomon Ford, llc (502 national pike w, brownsville, PA 15417 (724) 785-5500), the technician informed the contact that the subframe was rusted and may detached from the vehicle soon. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000.

Heavy rust on the frame. Today the spare tire fell off while going down the highway due to heavy rust. No injury to property or people from the incident.

The rear portion of the frame is rusting away and the leaf spring shackle fell off while driving on a city street causing the bed of the truck to fall onto the busted shackle. The spare tire mount is rusted so bad that we removed the spare tire to avoid loosing the spare while driving. The rear bumper seems unstable as the frame is rusted and falling apart from the rear shackle mount on back. The front portion of the frame seems to be holding up ok.

Frame rusted out on passenger side behind front leaf sprinf mount. Also the cross member holding fuel tank where it connects to the frame is rusted out. Its only the back half of the truck rusting out this bad. Where the spare tire goes is also completly rusted out and fell off. This happened while driving on smoothly paved roads to and from work.

A few weeks ago my spare tire fell off my truck while driving on lakeshore drive in hewitt, NJ 07421. Thankfully it rolled off onto the side of the road so no one else hit it. Yesterday I noticed the back end of the truck looked twisted only to find that the rear passenger side frame is completely snapped. Only to further discover the entire frame, suspension, and various other components are rotting horribly. My vehicle has under 70,000 miles. I had an older Toyota tacoma a few years ago that was recalled due to frame rust and it was fully handled. However, the rust and rot on this Ford Ranger make the 1997 tacoma frame look nearly new. I can no longer drive this vehicle as it is not safe. Ironically, it seem that this is or has happened to nearly every Ford Ranger from the early 2000s. Personally I feel with the overwhelming amount of web evidence (literally thousands) Ford should be held responsible. Please see the photos I've attached. Thank you.

Rear leaf spring bracket rusted off from frame, while loaded and on route home from tree nursery. Rear frame sections rotted and cracked on vehicle with only 72000 miles, found when trying to replace blown brake line in rear drivers side (rusted).

Rear end of frame completely rusted out. Leaf springs broken. Spring shackle broke off. Brought the truck in for service unaware there was so much irreparable damage. Damages occurred while driving on a city street. Pieces of the body were missing. Exact date damages occurred is unknown.

Frame rusting on the bed. It is loose and wobbly and may come off. Vehicle only has 55,000 miles on it. Noticed while driving down the highway and checking over my shoulder to pass. Saw the bed of the truck moving about.

These are pictures of the frame on my Ranger. The frame is rusting out and it only has 76,619 miles on it. My mechanic found this when I was having the brake line repaired and he lifted the truck.

The frame is badly rusted, especially in the rear. The driver side rear leaf spring shackle fell off about 12 months ago. Withing the last week , the rear bumper became detached on the driver side. The passenger side is not far behind either. The leaf spring shackle probably happened while driving, but did not significantly affect vehicle performance. The rear bumper fell off while the vehicle was stationary.

Tl the contact owns a 2001 Ford Ranger. While driving 25 mph over a railroad track, the spare tire loosened from the vehicle without warning. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road, looked underneath, and noticed nothing but rust where the frame for the spare tire was located. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 136,092.

The frame has rusted so severely that the rear suspension is detaching from frame and frame is almost rusted completely through and will separate soon. The spare tire and carrier have fallen off where is was attached to the frame due to the excessive rust and the bed mounts have rusted away and no longer attach to the frame leaving the bed with no solid mount. Spare tire and carrier fell off on interstate while driving.

I purchased this 2004 Ford Ranger this past winter in hopes to pull my boat to the lake with it. Yesterday. I pulled my small bass boat to lake chickamauga and back which is about a 40 minute drive. It was a straight drive on a highway only going 50 mph. When I got back my hitch, bumper and all was hanging. The frame is so rusted it broke in half. Had I not installed an after market hitch on this truck my whole bumper would have come off along with the boat that was attached and probably would have killed whoever was behind me ot not myself. I cant imagine what wouod have happened of I was on the interstate at higher speeds. The only thing holding it all together was the front bolt on the hitch when I got home. This is absolutely unsafe and I know there are many others that have problems with this same vehichles frame that have not taken the time oit of their busy schedule to complain about.

2008 Ford Ranger. Consumer writes in regard to rust over frame of vehicle which attributed to our problems.

The passenger side rear shackle rusted completely off and the leaf spring almost went through the bed of the truck. The truck was not drivable until the passenger side rear shackle was replaced. This was discovered after driving over a bump in the road, hearing a loud bang and experiencing a jolt. Once parked the truck was completely looked over, which lead to more discoveries. A giant rust hole has formed in the frame behind the shackle on the driver's side rear area of the truck. This truck has been well maintained throughout the years and was professionally under coated a couple years ago with no holes in the frame or visible rust at that time. The frame has deteriorated rapidly. Luckily I did not try to tow anything with this truck because the rear part of the frame likely would have been ripped off, losing what was being towed and potentially causing an accident. There is also a large hole forming in the bed of the truck.

Chassis frame is rusting away. All enamel paint is gone and chunks of rusted metal is flaking off.

2006 Ford Ranger. The whole frame is rusting bad enough it has to be replaced. There has been a few places patched and the cross member news to be replaced as well.

2001 Ford Ranger frame is rusted out bad. There should be a recall on this since so many people are having the same problem. Ford should be ashamed of themselves for making a vehicle that the frame only lasts 15 to 17 years!.

While driving, the spare tire started to fall off due to rusting away of the mounting apparatus. Luckily I noticed it when I stopped for gas (it was hanging by only a bit of still attached rusted metal below the truck) so I cut the cable with some bolt cutters to remove the spare and prevent an accident while driving. Driver's side cab mount separated due to excessive rust. Driver's side floor board fell out due to excessive rust - my foot went through the floor. Frame cracked near rear shackle due to excessive rust. Frame cracked near driver's side rear shock mount due to excessive rust - excessive play and noises caused be to discover this. Bed rusted completely out - above wheel wells on both sides, center of bed, front corners. It came off the truck in several pieces after I put my foot right through the center. The frame rust issues and spare tire falling off could be serious safety problems. I have driven a number of vehicles for many years and never experienced rust issues like on this truck. Way beyond what is reasonable and expected.

The rear bumper frame has rusted out and detached from vehicle. Loading brush into truck bed, stepped on bumper, and it collapsed. Checking the rear frame, springs, and suspension shows extended rust, making the vehicle unsafe to drive.

Body frame rusted to the point I noticed the bumper was hanging down on drivers side, as I looked under the truck in my driveway I had seen the shackle was broken and the plate over the spare tire was cracked which could have cause the tire to fall out from under the truck or bumper which was not connected on drivers side because of rust also frame had to be repaired these are the repairs I had done, replaced rear frame section from rear axle snubbers to bumper, replaced rear shackles-replaced right side rear frame shackle mount repaired crossmember for gas tank right side-repair right front frame rail round contro; arm to trans crossmember cost with labor $973. 69.

Takata recall on my Ford Ranger underneath the truck where the frame is it has been completely eaten up by rust. My spair tire has fallen off because the frame is covered in rust. And the main body frame rust off and it's completely disconnected under the bed. My vehicle was in motion when I lost the spair tire.

Frame is rusting away. Both rear shock mounts. Gas tank holding straps. Both chasis rails are rusting away with big chunks of steel falling off. Trans cross member rusting away.

My 2007 Ford Ranger pick up truck has extreme premature rust to the entire frame resulting in it being unsafe to drive. The rust resulted in an unsafe vehicle with only 83,557 miles on it. Through online investigation and by talking to other Ford Ranger owners I understand this is a common and reoccurring problem with the Rangers. I know that Ford motor company is well aware of this problem and does not have a recall. I know that there is a class action suit forming in TX over this exact issue. I feel this was deceptive and unfair of both townsend Ford, the dealer who sold me the used truck, and the Ford motor company because when I purchased the vehicle they knew about the premature rusting frame issue. The rust is so extreme that the spare tire carriage underneath completely rusted out and the tire dropped to the ground. Another part of the engine (the e-vap?) had to be strapped up for fear it will drop to the ground as well. 2 auto mechanics and 2 dealers told me it was unsafe to drive and won't pass inspection. (including a Ford dealer) much of the supporting truck frame is completely gone or full of rust holes and cracks. One mechanic suspects that the frame was not treated properly at the factory, because the extremely rusted and decayed frame is only on one side of the vehicle, while the other side has only normal surface rust. The current kelly blue book value is $8,000. , but I can't sell it- it won't pass inspection, and I can't drive it because it is unsafe. The vehicle has been driven continually since I purchased it in both city and country and was never abandoned.

A 2009 Ford Ranger was purchased as a replacement for a Toyota tacoma that was subject to the manufacturer buy-back program for defective frame steel resulting in excessive corrosion. The 2009 Ranger has now failed the vermont vehicle inspection for excessive frame rust in several locations. This Ranger has 34,000 miles on it and may not be repairable (will be determined in the near future by the regional Ford dealership. ) in my opinion, a vehicle with 34,000 miles should not be presenting this level of corrosion. Please investigate this defect.
