16 problems related to cruise control have been reported for the 1999 Ford Taurus. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Taurus. While the vehicle was parked in the garage, it caught fire. The fire spread quickly throughout the garage. The fire department extinguished the fire and stated that the fire could have originated with the cruise control module, which is common in some Ford SUV's. The current and failure mileages were 84,000.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle began driving as if the cruise control had been activated and accelerated abnormally. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 121,000.
Vehicle surged forward when vehicle was shifted into park, resulting in vehicle hitting a brick wall. While shifting into park, the engine accelerated to over 3000 rpm which caused the vehicle to jump an eight inch curb and violently hit a brick wall.
Driver experienced sudden acceleration while cruise control was engaged twice within the same hour. Driver had to exit off highway due to brakes having minimum affect with pedal descending to floor board. After that, driver pulled over and had difficulty moving gear shift from park after sitting for several minutes. After disengaging cruise control, driver was able to control vehicle. Consumer had scheduling problems with dealership, but was advised not to use cruise control until vehicle was inspection.
Vehicle was going 70 mph when accelerator pedal fell off, causing the vehicle to lurch forward. Dealer was notified. And was aware of problem. Consumer stated that the cruise control was not on but it engaged on its own.
The Taurus has experienced many instances 1) unwanted acceleration at slow speeds in heavy traffic. This is characterized by excessive "creep" from standstill, a shift to second gear with a sudden lurch forward. Unable to maintain slow speeds without foot on brake. 2) no engine braking. The Taurus will not slow down with at all when all pressure is removed from the accelerator. . . . As if on cruise control. 3) excessive speed increase when driving down a grade, no matter how slight. Driving on neighborhood streets, the car will accelerate by 15 mph or more with no pressure on gas pedal. This necessitates riding the brake frequently.
While pulling into a parking lot vehicle suddenly surged and accelerated, and damaged three other vehicles. Vehicle did not have cruise control. Pedal did go to the floor during acceleration. Vehicle was inspected and nothing could be found.
Cruise control failed to maintain set speed on downhill highway. As a matter of fact, the speed increased from 55 to 85. Since it was a new car, and no other cars on the state highway at the time, I did not realize the increase in speed since there were open fields on both sides of the road. When I notified the seller, I was told that it is marked so in the owner's manual. My basic question is, "who reads the manual before actually having a problem?" I believe the words, cruise control" should not be used ssince the word control is misleading if the car gains speed on a downward slope. Or at least, the seller should notify the purchaser with a big notation that this is so. The failure of this knowledge led to my getting a costly speeding ticket from the new york state police.
While pulling into parking space with driver's foot on brake, vehicle surged forward and went to 5000 rpm. Vehicle was previously driven for approx. 20 min. At highway speeds with cruise control active.
Unsure--but brake failure led to death of four, cruise control would not disengage, brakes to the floor, emergency pulled and car would not stop, went 320 feet before impact-not sure why, but want to inform others.
Vehicle does not slow down when accelerator pedal is released on highway. Car will accelerate when going down hill. This happens with and without cruise control. When cruise is set to 65 mph car will accelreate to 90 mph going down a hill. Dealer says this is part of the design?? have to ride the brakes on the interstate. This is not safe and costly in brake jobs.
Engine idles at 20mph and higher continually, dealership unable to rectify high idle.
Was driving vehicle with cruise control engaged. Pressed on accelerator to release cruise control which failed to release. Vehicle continued at same speed. Applied brakes to slow vehicle down. Moved to side of road & turned vehicle off. Restarted vehicle & cruise control was no longer engaged.
Engine will not slow down after throttle is released. It acts like a diesel engine without an engine brake and quite unsettling on interstates with steep downhill grades. Cruise control can not keep the car +/- 5 mph. There is a unauthorized fix on the net.
Vehicle is having problems with the cruise control. It is not working. The speedometer isn't reading it correctly. Vehicle is also having a problem with acceleration. When it occurs, the driver shut down the vehicle for about 10 mins. When vehicle is re-started everything begins to work again. Provide further details.
Vehicle experiences high idle and unwanted acceleration on several occasions.
