We have two Ford Taurus and both have the same door latch problem. Both are year model 2000. The issue is that when outdoor temperatures drop to the low 20 degree area and below, the doors will not latch. We found this out the first time by having the door fly open while driving. Ive done some internet research and it appears this has been a problem for many people going at least as far back as 1999, and forward to at least the 2004 model year. I could put a ton of links to sites where people are asking for help with this problem but theyre easy to find. I believe this is a serious safety defect that could put people at risk of an injury. In order to get the door latch to work properly requires that heat be applied and then this is only a temporary band aid. The door latches will not function as soon as they get cold again. I believe this is a design defect that will either cause an accident or create a situation where an occupant is not protected during a crash.

On 2/10/07 the local temperature was in the teens. I entered my 2005 Ford Taurus without incident, put on my safety belt, started it and began to drive. Upon beginning a right turn my drivers side door flew open - the latching mechanism had frozen open. Fortunately there were no injuries or damage to any vehicles, but it could have easily been otherwise. I believe this is a common Ford problem because the very same problem plagued a 1996 windstar I used to own.

Driver's door latch will not keep door shut in very cold weather.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the driver door would not latch in cold weather conditions (below 20 degrees). Once she was able to open it, she would have to hold it with her left hand and drive with her right because it would take such a long time to close completely. Most recently, the rear passenger side door also exhibited the same failure. She took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle had not been repaired to-date. She had not spoken with the manufacturer to-date. The current mileage was 102,408. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000. Updated 02/13/10 the consumer stated she held the door with her right hand, and drove with her left hand. Updated 02/16/10.
In cold weather, the side door latch mechanisms sometimes freeze and do not return to the latch position when the door is closed. The doors can open while the vehicle is moving. This is similar to TSB# 05224 and NHTSA# 10018738 but is occuring in a 2004 Ford Taurus. The other incidents apply to Ford five hundred, freestyle, and Mercury montego models.
2000 Taurus drivers door handles failed. Several times, while the vehicle was still covered under it's extended warranty, the consumer had to have the driver' s door open on the vehicle. The dealer claimed that moisture got into the locks. The dealer sprayed the locks. During the winter of 2004 and 2005 the consumer had to hold the door while driving until the lock thawed enough to close properly. The consumer also had a problem with the rear driver's side door not unlocking. Now all four door handles are not working properly.
: the contact stated while preparing to back the vehicle out of the driveway, the child unbuckled the seat belt and was able to unlock the door. The contact stated the door alarm did not sound. As the vehicle was backed out and to the left at 5 mph, the 4 year old child was thrown out the rear right door. The child became pinned under the front right wheel of the vehicle, and sustained abrasions and swelling of the ankles, knees, and left thigh. The child was taken to the emergency room. A police report was taken. The manufacturer of the booster seat and vehicle were not notified.

Car door open light remains on and door locks will not secure when car is placed into gear and moved. You may press lock mechanism on the door, but locks will unlock again almost instantly. I believe and have been told by my mechanic that this is a problem with the door lock switch. It may be one or all four doors causing this lack of security.
Consumer states: the latch on passenger's side of the front seat will not latch when shutting the door.

The power door locks occasionally unlock automatically while driving the vehicle or when parked. Problem continued until lock actuators failed and the doors could only be locked or unlocked manually. Dealer replaced three failed actuators ($500) and the doors began to automatically unlock again.

The rear passenger door locks would stick. The consumer would be unable to open the rear door locks manually or with the remote control. Rear doors won't stay closed. Consumer states that he had to tie the two door handles together to keep them closed.
Car doors do not automatically lock when car is put into drive and car begins to move. Indicator in dash says door open (and none are). The doors will not lock manually when driving, they will unlock if you try to lock.
Rear driver's side door latch. Door does not fully latch unless abnormal force is used to shut the door.
Door lock on driver side broke while consumer was trying to unlock vehicle. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything. Please provide further information.
I have had trouble getting the key to work in the ignition switch and the door and trunk locks. The key will go in the locks, but it will not turn to unlock as it should. It takes some time to get them to work. I have started to leave the doors unlocked so I will be able to get in the car in an emergency. This has been an ongoing problem since January of 2002.
Front passenger side door will close. Consumer has to push down lock and close door so it will stay shut. If doesn't push down lock door will not shut. Have to contact dealer.
Both rear door and front pass. Door latch springs will not retract handle/latches. Passenger thinks they have closed door, but handle is up/out and door is not latched. Door flies open on a turn in road.
Extreme safety hazard (front doors will not open from inside or outside of vehicle. Have to be opened from rear).
Doors won't open. Have to get in rear and open from inside.
Right door lock failed. Nlm.
The automatic door locks started acting up a little after a year of our vehicle purchase. Both left and right front doors are suppose to unlock all four doors when an unlock motion is done twice. We took the car in to the dealer three times for this problem with unsatisfactory results. At one point, we could not unlock the front driver's side door. After the warrenty period expired, the dealer suddenly had a solution to our problem but at our expense. I did not want to pay for a repair that should of been covered under warranty. The doors remain unrepaired to this day.
Door locks inoperative.
Door would not open due to latch problem. Yh.
Door handles do not work properly. They open door sometimes, and other times it do not. Contacted dealer, they were not willing to help.
Everytime the car is washed or it rains the locks lock up until the car dries. Dealer tried to fix it and failed.
