Approximately two months ago I noticed fluid leaking under the vehicle I looked at it and thought it was oil I checked the oil it was fine, a friend mentioned rack and pinion so I looked there and that's where the leaking came from. I took the vehicle to a garage for professional opinion was told it would cost approximately$1. 200 to repair, he also found a bad motor mount. I don't have that kind of money at this time to invest into the needed repairs. Please contact me about any recalls that relate to this problem. Thank you.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking power steering fluid. The contact stated that the vehicle needed approximately one bottle of power steering fluid per day for it to operate normally. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the spindle and rack fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 97v165000 (steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

Tl-the contact owns a 1998 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that while driving the steering wheel became hard to turn and made a winding noise. The vehicle was taken to several mechanics for inspections and located the failure at the rack and pinion failed and was leaking fluid. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000. Li.
Vehicle has 76,000 miles. Power steering fluid was being gradually lost and steering noise occurred as the fluid level went down. Took it to dealership, and they explained power steering pump was leaking. Replaced with a new one at another shop and today all fluid was lost in less than 15 minutes of driving, leaving me with unassisted steering. Took it back to the shop (with difficulty) and they said the new pump was faulty and is leaking at the same place, however, stains are now on the left side of vehicle when the pump is actually on the right. Previously, stains were on the right side, now they are on the left so it can't be the pump again. Shop will not honor their warranty on parts/labor. I am concerned that this will cause an accident, or start a fire under the vehicle. I have seen on the internet that power steering leaks on this model are very common, so please investigate this matter and let me know what you come up with.

Contact states that there was a loud noise in the power steering that got worse when turning. It was getting harder to turn. It felt like it was slipping at times. There were metal filings in the power steering fluid. Dealer replaced the power steering gear and a pump. She was told the power steering was leaking fluid. She was still hearing a slight noise when she turns to the left. Manufacture has not been contacted yet.

I filed a complaint on 2/10/03 (odi # 10005590) relating to the loss of power steering fluid in our 1998 Ford Windstar. The dealership, at that time, used a repair kit (rather than a complete replacement) for the second time in a year. In early August, 2003, the repair kit failed again and we had no power steering fluid left at all. Three failures in a critical safety device in 18 months very clearly indicates that the manufacturer's remedial plan is inadequate and a recall is necessary.
Left rear and left front hub and bearing assemblies began making loud humming/grinding sounds suddenly at 51,000 miles. Ford dealership diagnosed and replaced defective hub and bearing assemblies for the standard price as it is no longer under warranty. This item should last much longer without failing. Steering pump began intermittently making whining/hissing sounds when the slightest turning input was applied. By the time the failed power steering pump was diagnosed, and the whining was constant, it had caused the rack and pinion seals to fail and steering fluid to leak from the rack and pinion sleeves. When steering fluid got low and steering was no longer power assisted, my wife almost had a collision with a vehicle full of children. Not trusting Ford anymore, I ordered the parts myself and hired a local mechanic to replace the power steering pump and rack and pinion. In most vehicles these components should last beyond 100,000 miles. Upon further investigation I found that failing power steering pumps, leading to failed rack and pinion seals, is a consistent problem on 1999 Windstars, and that Ford is aware of the problem and trying avoid addressing it.
As my wife was backing our Ford Windstar into the driveway, a spray of hot oil came from the driver side tire and hit me on the right leg not serious but turned my leg red for a short time. Appears to be power steering fluid as she finished backing up the vehicle into the driveway, the car was making a horrible groaning noise. Have added a couple of ounces of power steering fluid into the resevoir. Will drive or maybe have vehicle towed to repair shop.
For the second time in one year, our 1998 Ford Windstar (VIN 2fmza5143wbc98551) is in need of repair to correct a power steering fluid leak. I understand there are two service bulletins that have been issued on this defect (bc3150970219 and 0156).
Vehicle pulls excessively to the right when in the right lane and to the left when in the left lane. This is an extreme unsafe condition bgought to the attention of two dealers and Ford main customer service dept with no resolution to the problem. Power steering also make a "whining grunt" noise and p/s fluid leaks through the rack and pinion end seals as recognized by Ford in their TSB 01-5-6 and 01-4-5. Ford is not accepting responsibility for this inherent defect and the dealers rely on the computer print out of the front end alignment machine. After only 20k mile front tire are totally worn out (unevenly) attesting to the fact that there is excessive and unsafe side pull. Peprhaps the three issues are related as they have been reported by other people as well.
