1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Power steering gets hard to steer while turning, pulling in to parking spaces, going around curves. Being told I have to replace the rack and pinion and then gm will replace the pump. Middle row middle seatbelt is locked won't pull out. Had to replace all front suspension. This vehicle is poorly made.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2017

I'm having the same issue that everyone is complaining about where I lose power when at low speed trying to enter or exiting a parking space. The steering wheel becomes very stiff. GMC recall was for steering pump but is making customers replace rack and pinion stating its unrelated and if not replaced it will not honor the 10 year warranty on the steering pump replacement.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Rack and pinion needs to be replaced. When calling around to dealerships, they said that its a common problem with Acadias. When a rack and pinion needs to be replaced, it causes the steering wheel to lock up when turning. It is a dangerous problem. Replacement costs is around $1,800.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

The contact owns a 2010 GMC Acadia. The contact had not experienced any failures prior to the vehicle receiving service for a manufacturer recall for the steering provided by an authorized dealer (christopher Chevrolet Buick, inc. , 1111 wicker st, ticonderoga, NY 12883, (518) 585-2842). The dealer took longer than a week to repair the vehicle. The contact was uncertain if the remedy prevented a failure or caused a failure. In addition, the dealer mentioned that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced due to a leak. The contact stated that there had not been any leaks since owning the vehicle. The contact was informed that the recall repair was completed. The manufacturer was notified and provided no solution concerning the remedy and dealer repairs. The VIN and NHTSA campaign number were unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2015

When making turns with the car the steering completely gave away and was very hard to maneuver a turn correctly. Was taken to the garage who informed us that the rack and pinion was bad and the power steering column. Finding out that this is a issue with almost all GMC Acadia's was very upsetting to learn. If this is a issue with that many of them why has there not yet been a recall on this. Since there is no recall I am stuck paying well over $1000. 00 to fix so that I can hopefully not have the same issue again. GMC needs to do a buy back recall on these models as they are not safe. Thankful that I was alone at the time that this happened however could have very easily caused a major accident had I not noticed when I was sopped to make a turn. How many people need to be killed or hurt before they will fix.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

When driving such as pulling into a parking spot, the steering locks up forcing me to slam on my brakes. This malfunction happens periodically in different situations. I have checked my power steering fluid and it is at the full mark. I believe the system in this vehicle does not have a large enough reservoir which causes the rack and pinion to lock up in the middle of a turn.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2013

Power steering pump, rack and pinion all needed to be replaced while under 100k miles. Was unable to effectively turn because steering was stiff. I noticed it most at low speeds in particular. Had several occasions that I began turning with plenty of time to make a turn and barely completed the turn in time.

8 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

When attempting to make a left turn at an intersection, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn and I had to use both hands to turn the wheel. During the month, there were several more instances with slow turns to the right and left. There is also a bumping noise (thump, thump) coming from somewhere underneath the steering wheel. It is not all the time but increasing as time goes on. The steering wheel is more becoming more difficult to turn and the incidents are increasing. I went to a chevorlet/GMC dealership this morning and was told it was either my power steering pump or the rack and pinion that would need to be replaced. They would have to have my vehicle for 2 days, one to test it to determine the exact nature fo the problem and one day to fix it. The cost would be anywhere from $300-$600, depending on the cause. I have read several forums on the internet of Acadia owners with the same issue but power steering problems going down interstates when attempting to exit onto an off ramp at a high rate of speed.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

Starting slowly and intermittently when making a hard turn to the left from a standing start, power steering lost. This was particularly dangerous when turning into or across oncoming traffic as turning radius truncated and correction ("recovery") became very difficult. Subsequently frequency of occurrence increased and included hard turns to the right. Checked for TSB/recall. TSB(technical service bulletin) found. Followed recommendation to flush and exchange change power steering fluid. This resulted in correction for a short period of time after which steering intermittently lost with very sluggish steering. Flushed and exchanged power steering fluid for a second time and filled to 1/4 inch above tank full line as some recommended on on a TSB website. Unfortunately the power steering failure returned, again intermittently but with increase frequency. There were several near accidents because of the steering fail. Manufacturer/ dealership contacted. The only advice was follow the TSB instructions. Because in my mind and based on my experience with the intermittent and unpredictable power steering failures that have occurred a complete overhaul of the power steering system, as well as rack & pinions as directed in the TSB will be undertaken in three days. In my opinion having done some research regarding this problem which apparently has occurred in a number of Acadia as well as similar models in the gm family which I understand have had recalls, the Acadia power steering issue deserves immediate nhtsb investigation.
