Seven problems related to steering have been reported for the 1997 GMC C1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Traveling at 40 mph the vehicle has failed to come to complete stop and keeps skidding. Truck started to skid side ways,brakes gave out and would not function properly. Truck kept skidding for about half mile before brakes worked and was able to control the suburban. The brake pedal went all the way down and pumped it several times but would not work. Seems like abs module,brakes are good. Just abs has failed at different times. Suburban jumps and keeps going when stopped. Fails to make complete stop even at low speeds.
1997 GMC truck. When turning to the right, sometimes there is no resistance on the steering wheel and the truck can veer (hard right) at any speed. The slightest weight of your hand can unexpectedly cause an immediate hard right turn. Faulty e. V. O. Rotation sensor replaced by dealer on 06/25/98, 5/24/99 and 8/27/99. Gm extended the warranty for this sensor to 65,000 miles. Sensor is still defective. This defect can and probable has caused severe accidents and possible death. Old parts are not available. Current defective part is in use now.
The steering had play in and wandered from left to right. The steering sensor was replaced.
Due to a malfunction in steering assist sensor, steering operated softly and turned more over which may cause crash. Common problem. Dealer was aware of problem. When the power steering is in over steer condition, the vehicle continue off road and is seriously damage.
While making a turn or changing lanes, steering malfunctions, which may cause a loss of vehicle control and a crash. There is bulletin # 86-32-06 dealing with reduced steering effort which explains this defect. Repairs covered under warranty. Consumer believes a recall should be issued.
Also on Chevrolet 2500 1998, oct 8, 1999, 60,000 VIN # 1gcfc29m4we152152, on both vehicles, due to a defective steering wheel rotation sensor, the power steering is inoperative which may cause diffculty in steering vehicle, and may result in a crash. Please provide further information.
I have taken the truck in to be repaired several times and they only put glue on the rear end. One dealer did contact GMC, but no results. The power steering is not right either.
