1 Air Bag problem of the 2022 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 01/20/2026

To whom it may concern, this letter is submitted to report a safety-related defect involving an airbag sensor failure on a 2022 GMC Canyon. The vehicle experienced a failure of an airbag sensor that is part of the supplemental restraint system (srs). The sensor is required for proper airbag deployment and system readiness. Failure of this component compromises the operation of the airbag system and presents a potential safety risk to vehicle occupants. The failure occurred on a vehicle approximately four years in service and was diagnosed as an airbag sensor defect. The sensor assembly includes an integral gasket, and the failure of that gasket resulted in sensor malfunction and airbag system fault indications. General motors and the administrator of the GMC platinum protection plan were notified of the defect. Coverage for the repair was refused on the basis that a component of the sensor assembly was allegedly excluded, despite the fact that the gasket is integral to the sensor and the failure affects a federally regulated safety system. As a result of this refusal, a safety-related defect involving an airbag system was not repaired. The matter was treated as a contractual coverage issue rather than addressed as a potential defect impacting occupant protection. This submission is intended to notify NHTSA of a failure involving an srs component that may affect other similarly manufactured vehicles. An airbag sensor failure raises concerns regarding component durability, system reliability, and compliance with applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss). This complaint is submitted for logging, review, and any action the office of defects investigation deems appropriate.

14 Air Bag problem of the 2021 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 10/10/2021

I was involved in a mva with another car. The other car had all their airbags deploy after they struck me. None of my airbags deployed. I was hit in the right front corner ahead of my right tire. The secondary impact was to my right side between my rear passenger door and rear tire. They hit me with enough force to bend the frame of my truck, crack my engine block and the appraisal from the repair shop came to over $34k without any engine work. I was the only one in my vehicle, thankfully. I am not sure how many occupants were in the other vehicle. But they were transported to the hospital by ambulance. My wife took me in our other vehicle. I was diagnosed with a concussion, assorted bruises, aches and pains. What troubles me is that while my airbags didn't deploy, the other vehicles did! I was spun to 180* from the way I was traveling. (I don't recall any portion of the accident, I was planning on making a right hand turn and I ended up the opposite way from the way I intended to go. I fell that there was sufficient force involved to have my airbags deploy and I did contact GMC to make them aware of it as well.

19 Air Bag problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 10/07/2018

On 10/07/2018 I was involved in an accident which totaled my vehicle . It was a left turn accident I was driving straight and the impact was front and center of my vehicle. Damage was over $22,000. 00 I sustained a minor injury back and neck pain and recently had surgery for a hernia which I had 10 years prior , after the accident it became painful . I am 55 years old and that type of violent impact could have been reduced if the airbag(s) deployed properly. I purchased a new 2017 vehicle all systems and components should have worked. On the date of the accident my vehicle had just over 6400 miles on it. I submitted a claim to gm or esis (lisa rozelle) 91800 888-0164 and their response , I quote " at this time, based on all documentation received and reviewed esis on behalf of general motors llc , will not be in a position to honor your request for damages" . I sent 26 pictures , the total loss work sheet and the police report. I also informed them of my injury. No one from gm or esis ever came out to look at my vehicle or examine the black box. They basically just blew me off. I will attach a few photos for NHTSA too review. Thank you for your consideration to this matter.

23 Air Bag problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

We recently purchased a 2016 Canyon truck for about 45k with the new small diesel engine. On 10-19-16 we took it in to dealership for routine service and a major loud vibration rattling under the dash in the passenger air bag area. When we picked vehicle up we were told that they did not have a fix for noise coming from under dash air bag area and others Canyons have been in for the same problem and that they are dealership waiting on procedure from GMC for fix? we have a concern that this could be a safety issue, since noise is coming from air bag area and would like your expeditious attention regarding this matter.

24 Air Bag problem of the 2007 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

Vehicle is a small pick up extended cab with half doors that have rear side hinges. Air bag service light was set. Upon repair diagnosis, it was discovered that wires that travel between the body and the left side half door -behind the drivers door were broken from the door opening and closing. Since this half door is used very little, there is a defect with the quality of wire that cannot withstand flexing by opening and closing the door. These wires control the pre tensioner assembly in the half door. When the wires are broken it disables the entire air bag restraint system. Wires were not physically damaged by any other means. These wire should not be broken on this age vehicle with little use.

25 Air Bag problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Hit 3 deer in high speed collision. My air bags didn't function. Then research online showed I have tikata airbags. Then I noticed my brakes if wet or have ice on rotors, when braking, I get terrible squeaking noise and front end will shimmy or vibrate. Rear brakes too. And my power steering started making noise, like a rubbing sound a few months after I bought truck, though no fluid loss or stiffness in steering. I know these air bags are dangerous, metal parts have killed a few people. Why wasn't I notified by automaker about what airbags were installed in my truck!? I need fixed. I do a lot of mountain driving. I would like them to work properly. And these strange noises really bug me. I can't be breaking down deep into mountain roads when I work or travel. Much highway traveling too. The cruise control has never worked, since two weeks after buying truck. If coming up to hills when set, then as you drive up & down more hills, it will self excellerate! not slow down on declines. Very scary a couple of times. Very dangerous! engine would jump into passing gear. I have the 5 cylinder 3. 5 motor. Automatic, sle extended cab 4x4. Should I go back to dealer to get fixed?.
