1 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 05/08/2021

Vehicle does not respond to acceleration command while entering a highway or during highway driving, increasing the risk of collation with other vehicles due to transmission failure, suspect the torque converter not working properly. This is a major and well known issue, gm continues to ignore and I do not want to become the next statistic dead in us highways. The vehicle is moving, during a red triangle yield sign entering the highway, the vehicle will not respond to acceleration command causing a bottle neck of traffic behind me and high risk of being rear ended. This is a serious defect affecting the transmission, it needs to be investigated and resolved as soon as possible.

2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2018 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 04/15/2021

For several months, we are now continuously experiencing a shaking and shuddering of the Canyon every time the truck shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. It is very disturbing driving down the street and the Canyon begins to shake so hard that everyone is jarred in their seats even with seat belts on. It is almost as if the Canyon is being rear ended by another vehicle as we're driving down the street. Our biggest concern is that it happens on major roads whenever we accelerate after a traffic light transitions from red to green. As we clear the intersection, the shaking occurs and as the Canyon reduces speed momentarily, we have almost been rear ended. Our Canyon is still under warranty as we have the extended powertrain warranty. Furthermore, we just learned of a gm service bulletin, 18-na-355 dated August, 2019, that has been circulating. We found a copy of the torque converter clutch sb and it applies to all GMC Canyons from 2017-2019. Needless to say, gm (corporate and dealership) want us to pay out of pocket for a very expensive diagnostics test (e. G. , hundreds of dollars) to confirm there is a problem and then determine if warranty will cover the repair(s). This is a very serious vehicle safety issue that can cause accidents if the driver is not accustomed to being tossed about in their seat while driving the Canyon. Gm needs to do a recall to fix this problem for all affected vehicles as people, especially those that are on fixed incomes, are not able to pay out of pocket for a test just to validate the toque converter clutch shudder does exist.

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 02/04/2020

Transmission experiences torque convertor shudder. With very hard shifts at 5 and 18 mph. Dealer complied with bulletin 18-na-355. Had improvement in shift for a while. Then hard shift return at 5 and 18 mph. During decelerations there would be a shudder. When using cruise control when reducing speed transmission would shudder. Return to dealer, when oil pan was removed found aluminum chips and one metal chip. Dealer replace with remanufactured transmission. Drove vehicle home. Then went out and drove the vehicle upon exiting drive way experience torque convertor slippage at around 12 mph with engine rpm going from 2000 to 4000. Continued to drive vehicle once torque convertor reengaged. Continued driving made couple of short trips in traffic continue to experience banging in drive train. I believe this vehicle puts my safety at risk.

Failure Date: 10/28/2019

This is 2nd $40,000 Canyon I've been taken for! 1st was 2016, and transmission would take off after flooring it, as it would just lay down and scared the wife so much, and wouldn't drive it! had to repurchase an 2017, with the 8 spd trans, and even worse! it shakes and shudders even after fluid flush, then new torque converter! then was told, there's nothing more gm can do for you!?? really? now gm is not responding to multiple calls! $43,000 truck really? never again, these vehicles should not be on the road! was promised to have this resolved this afternoon,10-28-19, and once again no return calls! will seek real council in am, as gm resolution is a joke! don't waste your time, go strait to qualified firm.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 07/12/2018

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 06/04/2018

Torque converter fails at 12000 miles for many. There is a GMC notice out since 2016. Mine failed at 16000 miles and the one they replaced will likely fail again in another 16k miles. This is bad. I noticed it when I pressed on the accelerator and as I increased speed up to 45 mph. It rattled and rocked badly. The GMC repairman said, "yeap. . . . . Ever since 2016 all these damn torque converters have been failing in the Canyons and colorados because gm and chevy changed the size and strength of the metal used in order to reduce the weight of trhe vehicle. We will replace it, but I can assure you it will fail again and you'll have to bring it back to use for change out again. " wow. . . . What a bunch of crap.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 01/17/2018

Transmission hunts for gear when trying to accelerate 25-40 mph when transmission temp is 120 degrees and higher in slow and go driving. Leads to dangerous situation because accelerator pedal must be 'stomped' on to get transmission to downshift. Especially dangerous on wet roads when rear of truck can swerve when accelerating and in slow and go traffic having to push hard on accelerator to go when many cars around. Gm knows of the problem and publishes paper stating exactly the symptoms and and tell dealers not to take further action other than making software up to date which solves nothing. Not all gm trucks and even cars of this year are affected but years before and after for decades have this same issue as found on internet forums. Changing to different transmission fluids and even changing torque convertors has been done in the past but for 2015/2016 no remedy is offered. This has been going on 1. 5 years since new and getting worse. Because of lack of out of service days I don't think lemon law applies.

10 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2015 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 05/29/2015

While driving at a steady speed, when attempting to lightly or moderately accelerate, a lack of power is noticed due to torque converter lockup. Engine comes close to stalling out. In may 2016, I was informed gm engineering was aware of the problem were working on a solution. During a followup visit in September 2016, I was informed that gm no longer considered it a problem and were no longer working on a solution. Gm tac # 8-2110571583. There has not been a specific accident related to a lack of acceleration when expecting to accelerate, there remains the potential especially when merging into freeway traffic during peak travel times. The gm district service mgr drove the truck and informed me that there was no issue as he drove the same vehicle type and had the same performance. Per recent gm marketing, the 2017 GMC Canyon features a completely re-designed transmission. I believe this issue with the transmission is a safety issue caused by a poorly designed transmission.
