1 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2008 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 11/05/2019

Been having an issue with the brake light switch at the brake pedal sticking and our brake lights staying on. We notice it mostly after we have parked the truck and turn it off. The brake lights will stay illuminated, not always right away. The brake lights staying illuminated have caused our vehicle to have a dead battery many times. This issue with the brake light switch causing the lights to stay on has actually caused us to have to buy 2 brand new batteries in just over a 12 month period. This issue has killed our battery and left us stranded for hours while waiting for someone to come help us jump the battery. There is a recall out for this brake light switch issue, but this specific year is not included in the recall. Even tho this truck is having the exact same issue the the recall is for. We have been dealing with this issue for over a year now.

Brake light switch recall NHTSA recall campaign number 09v310000. This is a reoccurring malfunction affecting 187,000 vehicles, model years 2004-2009. The repair GMC performs is only a temporary fix and presents a safety danger to owners. Many owners have had the same malfunctions over and over again. I have repaired my GMC Canyon three times to date.

3 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2006 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 04/21/2015

I noticed that I had no speed control and then found I also did not have any brake lights. Back in 2006 or 2007, GMC issued a recall on this issue. Also again in 2009, but in the form of extended warranty till 2014. I just wanted to pass to you the concern that this issue may still be a problem for the truck. I talked to GMC and they did not want to help with the fix since its outside the warranty date. I'm concerned that drivers would only think its a problem with the speed control, and don't realize they have no brake lights. In my investigation, I found that in most cases the brake lamp switch was able to fail the speed control. Most drivers would not go for the fix on the speed control and open themselves up to a rear end accident.

4 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2008 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

At the time of original discovery of a problem the vehicles cruise control would work intermittently. Months after the original discovery, a friend stated I had no brake lights. I checked the fuses and bulbs both were satisfactory. I conducted a check of the break light switch with a volt meter and the switch is bad. There is no indication to the operator that the brake lights are not functioning. Further research indicates there is a known problem in this make of vehicle. I have conducted a VIN search of my vehicle and it is not covered in current or past recalls of this known issue. I believe the scope of the recall is not inclusive of all affected vehicles. I would also like to know if this issue translates to vehicles that come factory equipped with towing packages, in that if an operator is towing and using the factory installed towing connectors would the lighting of the towed vehicle be affected as well.

5 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2009 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

My husband's brake lights went out on his 2009 GMC Canyon. He took it to a dealer to have it fixed. We read online that there was a recall for his brake light switch. They checked his VIN and said there wasn't anything. It isn't the bulbs, fuse, etc. They "fixed" it and said "it'll either work for the next 5 min or it won't work at all. " and handed him the keys. He drove it and sure enough, the lights went out, again. He took it back and the same thing happened. "it may or may not work, yada yada. . . " why would they hand them the keys plus allow it pass for inspection if it does not work? as far as I am concerned, the work has not been completed. My husband recently got out of the usmc and has yet to find work. We cannot afford to keep taking it back or yet pay for a ticket!!!!.

10 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 12/16/2008

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Canyon. In 2007, the brake lights were not working and the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for repair. The contact assumed that the repair was made under the warranty and was not informed of a recall at that time. On December 16 2008, the contact realized that the brake lights failed again after someone almost rear ended her vehicle. She returned to the dealer and was informed that the previous repair was performed according to NHTSA campaign id number 06v139000 (exterior lighting:brake lights:switch). The dealer stated that the diagnostic would cost $98, plus parts and labor to repair the failure again. The failure mileage was 85,000.

11 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 08/21/2008

Apparently a continuing problem with defective brake light switches on my 2005 GMC Canyon. Brake lights cease to work as does the cruise control. I am complaining against gm, and d&j automotive in louisburg n. C. This is the third time that the switch will be replaced. The first time was under warranty, the second under recall, and as of now, there is no guarantee that I will not have to pay for it this time. Unacceptable!!!!!!!!.

12 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 05/26/2008

This is regarding continued issues with NHTSA campaign id 06v139000 and NHTSA action number: pe05065 and the faulty brake lamp switch on this vehicle. The brake lamp switch originally failed around 2005 and was replaced under warranty. It failed again around 2006 and was replaced via recall. This switch failed a 3rd time in October of 2008 and the dealer would not fix under warranty as they claimed it had already been done so I paid out of pocket for the repair. This same brake switch lamp failed again on 05/26/2009 after less than 8 months and fewer than 8,000 miles, again leaving me without functioning brake lights. I will return to the dealer to have it replaced again, but that is not an acceptable outcome. It has become painfully obvious that gm has failed to fulfill its obligation to fix this dangerous situation in that it not only leaves me without functioning brake lights making it very difficult for other drivers to know that I am stopping, but there is no warning that this failure has occurred! I risk my life every time I get behind the wheel of this vehicle because the engineers at gm seem incapable of perfecting a $5 switch that is part of an automotive technology that has been in existence for nearly 100 years (brake lights). General motors may have conducted a recall, but they have not fixed the problem. After getting the lamp switch replaced for the 4th time I will request the faulty part and will gladly supply it to the NHTSA if requested.

Failure Date: 10/09/2006

14 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2004 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 09/19/2006

Cruise control failed in June 2006. Rear brake lights failed in September 2006. Found NHTSA id 06v139000 and showed to dealer service. However, they and GMC indicate that there was no recall on my VIN. Had to pay $149. 36 to repair and missed work because it took all day to get part and install. GMC would not reimburse until it a recall for my VIN is announced.

15 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 07/11/2006

Brake light switch failed on my 2005 Canyon (brake lights would not shut off). Complained to dealer when it was taken in for inspection a few days later. They "adjusted" switch passed the truck in inspection. A week later problem occurred again. Was never notified of a recall. Had to find that out in personal research. Had to buy the part myself since no one would acknowledge the recall and did not have parts.

16 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2004 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

: the contact stated while brake pressure was applied, the rear brake lights failed to illuminate without warning. Additionally, the cruise control failed to engage. The contact referred to the owner's manual that stated the brake lights switch and the cruise control are connected by the same wiring. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer, but the dealer was alerted. There is a NHTSA recall # 06v139000 regarding the brake lights. The VIN was not included in the recall.

17 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 06/09/2006

: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked over night the brake light remained illuminated. The next day the battery was jump started before the vehicle started. During inspection the dealership determined the driver side rear brake light lens was melted however, the brake light switch continued to function. There is a NHTSA recall, # 06v139000, regarding the brake light switch. The VIN was not included in the recall.

18 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2004 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 01/07/2006

The brake lights on my 2004 GMC Canyon have failed 4 times since I purchased the truck in may 2004. The dealership continues to insist that the problem is a faulty break light switch. However, the replacement switches continue to fail.

19 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2004 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 12/08/2005

Rear turn signal lights, brake lamps and head lamps experience permanent loss. Sometimes when the vehicle becomes wet the cruise control stops functioning, the power door locks stop working, the power windows stop working, and the power rear view mirrors stop working. Also there is periodic non-functioning of the remote key entry. As of 11/10/2006 the rear tail lights have been replaced twice and one head lamp at owners expense. Currently a third brake light requires replacement. On Nov. 10, 2006 I took the truck in for repair an mentioned the recall on this particular problem. The dealership said that gm has not issued a recall and that the owner would have to pay for the repairs. I am aware of the "NHTSA campaign number 06v-139" and gm's April 26, 2006 response to mr. Daniel c. Smith, associate administrator for enforcement, NHTSA. Although the recall references only the brake lamps and possibility of cruise control failure, I believe the problem is further exasperated with the other afore mentioned electrical problems. Consequences present themselves in the form of distractions to the driver when trying to drive and make adjustments to the following electrical componets when they fail to function: door mounted rear view mirrors, lowering of windows in order to pay for highway tolls, rear brake lights and turn signal lights fail, and reduced head lamp failures.

20 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2005 GMC Canyon
