Ten problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 2002 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The motor started a fire!.
Vehicle loses power drastically when going up any incline. Was going 65 and speed dropped to 35 going up slight grade hill.

Rough idle while in park and while shifting to second gear. Engine light flashing, oil in spark plug wells, cylinder misfire on cylinder #4. Changed spark plugs & wires, this did not remedy the situation. I had the SUV for 1 month and the drive train went bad. Two months later, I got my truck back from the mechanic because parts needed to be certified by a gm engineer. I have had nothing but mechanical failures since 2010 when I bought the vehicle. Now I have at least five troubleshooting codes and now I'm being told that the cylinder head needs replaced. This shouldn't be happening and I know now that I will never buy another GMC product ever again.
We were again driving on interstate 5 at 60 mph when the engine just stopped. We were once again able to coast to the side of the road. This is the 2nd time our Envoy just stopped running at 60 mph. Again, the mechanics could not figure out why this happened. I happened one more time, but I do not have the date. So that makes three times our 2002 GMC Envoy suddenly quit running while at a high speed on the freeway. We are concerned this is an ignition problem like with the other gm vehicles this has happened to.

I own a 2002 GMC Envoy. For the past year or so, I've been having trouble whenever I stop at a red light, the car starts to shake and sometimes turns off. I usually turn the car off and start it up again. On Monday, July 27th, I was driving when my car suddenly shut down. Luckily I was able to get the car to a safe spot and no further damage was done to my car or other property. I tried starting the car again and it would not start. I had to get the car towed to a nearby mechanic. Once there, the mechanic looked over the car and determined that it was the computer engine and that it was under recall. He had me call GMC so that I could report the incident. When I called, I was told that there was no recalls on my exact car but that she would contact the mechanic and get some more information. After a couple days of waiting with no vehicle or call from GMC, I finally get a call back from the mechanic telling me that he spoke to the GMC representative and that they would be calling me back to set up a date and time to take my car to the dealership to have fixed and that the recall information was correct. About an hour later, I received a call from GMC and she told me that they were not going to cover the repair. Never having to deal with this before, I was completely confused as to what was going on and why GMC was not covering it. This is a huge safety concern for me and I would like to get some resolution from it.
2002 Envoy slt also when slowing down to an idle has shut off engine. Put up in park and will start back up. Dash light states service engine and service on star. Have not been able to fix problem yet.
When vehicle is at a complete stop or idling engine will die out. The dealership reprogrammed the main computer chip, but the problem recurred. They the replaced the chip. Please provide more details.
