GMC Jimmy owners have reported 16 problems related to other fuel system fuel gauge (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Fuel gauge does not indicate accurately at low fuel states. As fuel approaches empty (with 1/8 - 1/4 actual fuel remaining in tank), gauge begins to erroneously indicate progressively higher fuel quantities in the tank until a point where the gauge is indicating almost full, when in reality, the tank is almost empty. The obvious implication is that a motorist who is not paying close attention could be left stranded without fuel in the vehicle.

My fuel gauge in my 2000 Jimmy began fluctuating wildly in januray 2008. When the tank was filled it registered fine but after some gas was consumed the gauge proved grossly inaccurate. I had to watch my trip odometer to gauge the amount gas left in the tank. I went to several mechanic's and was told that it was the sensor. However, from what I was told, the sensor and gas pump are both connected and submerged in gas. I had it repaired and luckily it was only the sensor. It cost more than $400. I was told that if the unit was severely corroded, I would have to replace both the pump and sensor. This is not a comforting experience. I assume there is no danger from fire, but I would expect the gas gauge to work and it didn't. I find it interesting that another person experience the exact same problem, only earlier.

Gas gauge does not work. States full when vehicle is empty and then drops to empty after you run out of gas. I have to use my odometer to track how many miles I have driven to know when to fill tank again.
For the past two years my 2000 GMC Jimmy has had continuous malfunctioning fuel gauge which is not reliable. The fuel quantity needle fluctuates and is un reliable. The dealer says the repair is expensive and is not covered, due to the vehicle being out of warranty period. The vehicle mileage is tracked to determine approx fuel quantity. I am submitting this report to urge the odi to effect a vehicle recall to fix this wide spread problem with the 2000 my GMC Jimmy vehicle.
Fuel guage does not work. Must watch odometer to guess when gas needed. Abs engages at slow speeds. Replaced once already. Doors must be slammed violently to close doors.
Fuel gauge functions erratically. Marks full tank of gas and somewhere in the mid-full point the gauge will read what ever it wants (empty, 1/4, full. . . Etc. ).

The gas gauge does not work once the amount of gas is below half a tank, this occurs in many other GMC Jimmys in the 2000 model year, I have researched this online and found many complaints about this, yet no recall. The gas needle either sticks, bounces around or shows a full tank when empty, this makes it very difficult to determine if there is enough gas to get to where you need to go and causes people to run out of gas while on the road.
Fuel gauge has not worked for the last year. It goes from full to 3/4 of a tank and stays there. Sometimes it will go all the way to "e" then bounce around. Have been counting miles between fill ups to avoid running out of gas.
Regardless of how much fuel (I. E. Full) the gas gauge will frequently jump down to empty and low fuel light come on. This happens in drive and neutral on a daily basis. Constantly jumping back and forth. Sometimes will stay on empty when full.
Fuel gauge fluctuates between emty and full while in park or neutral, can't depend on fuel gage for ture information.
Windshield wipers do not work all the time. I was in a bad rainstorm last night and had to pull off the road because we couldn't see anything. Scary - this is a potential big law suit for GMC if anyone dies in an accident due to this common complaint. My GMC mechanic revealed that this happens on almost all GMC Jimmy's, yet there is no recall to replace the defective part to date. Transmission - slipped badly. I paid to have it replaced and sometimes it still slips. This transmission repair shop said that this is common with the Jimmy, as well as a faulty gas gauge, faulty ball joints and oxygen sensors. I did have to replace the oxygen sensor, but I consider that normal repairs.
My fuel gauge is malfunctioning. It floats back and fourth from full to empty. How safe can this be? also I have had problems with windows not rolling up and down and my back glass will not open from the rear outside button.
Fuel gauge faulty. Sometimes reads full when you have less than 1/2 tank of gas. Took to dealer and will cost more than $250. 00 to repair.

2000 GMC Jimmy experiencing problem with start up as well as with the gas gauge on the dashboard. The incident occurred on an extremely cold morning in which the vehicle would not start. The following day the vehicle started, but the consumer noticed that the gas gauge started going from empty to full. The consumer was instructed by the manufacturer to take the vehicle to the dealer and have them replace the pcm module (powertrain control module) free of charge. The engineer suggested that this problem would occur if the weather is very cold. The passenger side weather strip failed.
Engine check light on intermittently. SUV accelelerate slowly, rpms reach 3000 before vehicles moves. Instrument panel lights going on and off, including the fuel gauge indicator. Over head dash light won't work. Took my SUV to the dealership on a Friday 11/09/01. All problems were occuring at that time and they could see for themselves. I was informed the the diagnosistic test showed 5 trans codes. And that wire to the transmission was loose and they reconnected that wire and all codes were now clear. The very next day my SUV began doing the same thing all over again. I called the dealership and reported the problem on Monday 11/12/01. I was then told that the problem may be caused be a wire leading from my ignition to transmission. And that I might need an ignition switch. And that to do the work it would cost me $400 to $500. And that they didn't think that the fuel gauge problem was related to this problems. There are time that I am unable to control my windshield wipers. I have read over 12 simular compliants & incidents. GMC need to repair these malfunction before someone is seriously injuried. I have almost been rear ender several times because my SUV won't accelerate properly. And to be driving along and suddenly have your instrument panel fails, this is distracting and unsafe. Also, my emergency brake will not hold. S. O.
Consumer called complaining about having problems with windshield wipers stopping in the middle of real bad rain storms. Also, gas gauges are not working properly. Manufacturer was not contacted at the time of this call. * information** consumer called back in on 08/05/03 and advised that dealer serviced vehicle for recall remedy 01i018000/ball joints in 07/03. At that time, dealer was supposed to check wiper problem but did not. Consumer also added that vehicle was purchased in the united states.
