Door Hinge Problems of GMC Savana

The 2 side doors for passengers fail to open properly because the hinges fail to operate correctly and stop the doors from opening properly. So when our children are in the van, it is very difficult to open the doors to allow them to exit because the hinges lock up. We have already had the hinges replaced 4 times by the dealership and now they are doing it again. Eventually, if we push hard enough we can break the hinge and the door will then swing open. This has happened on 2 other occasions. The problem now is we can only open the doors about 8-10 inches before they get stuck. Then the door will not close properly with slamming it. The reason this is a safety hazard is if our vehicle is in an accident or we need to exit quickly we are unable to do so because of the manufacturers defective hinges.

My complaint is of the passenger side portside door hinges on almost all GMC Savanah 3500's that I have seen. It is a saftey concern for me because the door is almost completely detached from the vehicle and is inoperable. I have lubricated the hinges many time to no avail. The welds on the hinges are badly cracked with just a very small part of the weld(aprox. 1/4") holding the door on. The door will no longer close completely. I know of many other vans from the same model year have this same problem. One of my close friends and his son both have the same exact van; we bought them at the same time. They have identical problems with their hinges. I hope that you look into this further, I think it may be a rampant problem, and I definitely feel it is a major saftey concern. The contact stated the rear passenger door would not shut. He had to drive to the dealership with the door open. The dealership found the hinge snapped. He states it was because the pin was put in the hinge and then capped on the bottom. This did not allow moisture to escape, causing it to freeze and snap the hinge. The vehicle has not been repaired, but the dealership did get the door shut. General motors offered $150 towards the repair.

Defective hinges on side cargo doors. Side doors not frequently used. Repeatedly greased/oiled to reduce tension and force necessary to operate doors. Doors now inoperable. Hinges cracked & rusted out completely after only 3 1/2 years of owning vehicle. Passengers would be trapped inside if using center seats. Hinges are useless. Per GMC, my problem; take ownership of the vehicle & it's issues after warranty expired.

While opening the middle door to the Mini van the door sheared off . The door is hang off by the hinges. The driver was able to drive it to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the vehicle was not on recall and the warranty expired. Please fill in additional information.

This is a commercial vehicle used in transporting interior decorating items. On or about 8/2/04, I delivered a table top to a client and upon opening the rear side doors (both doors) the upper hinge on the furthermost rear door broke. I had noticed a rattling sound prior to this date, however I thought it was items inside the vehicle. The door is only being held on by the lower hinge and the other door closed upon it. I am fearful that the other hinge will suffer a stress fracture and possibly the door will fall off. I researched through this site and found two incidents of service bulletins (September 24, 2001 and June 1,2003) notifying that customers have complained that the door hinge binds. This had occurred to me also, prior to its breaking.

I have a 3500 Savana GMC van, when opening the right passenger door at the same time that the side door is open the side door hits the front passenger door which has caused a dent in the side door. The other issue is when someone opens the front passenger door and has their hand in the same location where the two door meet it could cause damage to the hand.

Hinges on 60/40 cargo doors are very stiff. Doors have been difficult to open and close for quite some time. Recently, lower hinge on 40 door has broken. Replacement of all hinges on these doors is approximately $1100. Have not yet contacted dealer about problem (had similar problems with hinges on 95 vandura).

Side door hinges are stiff, causing the door to bearly open. The hinge is causing the sheet metal to flex as it tries to open and close.

The hinges onthe side doors are breaking causing the doors to bind and not able to open. You cant get in or out of the van using the side doors. Fist the inside door banels bound on each other and were torn off. The hinges are welded to the GMC van. I cant replace them.

The hinges on the side doors of my 1998 GMC Savana van of the 4 hinges: 1 is broken and 2 are cracked. I called GMC and got the run around. They said they would not replace them unless you issued a recall on the hinges.

Side cargo doors progressively harder to open until rear upper hinge snapped. Door left hanging, very dangerous. Not rusted or abused.

Upper hinge pin falling out of hinges, and causing doors to drop. Unable to close properly;. Dealer / manufacturer notified, and refused to repair unless cost goes to consumer. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

Side cargo door has frozen at hinges and door cannot be opened. Dealer has been contacted. The door failure was safety hazard.

Consumer states side door will not open or close, bolts and hinges were rusted and frozen, dealer contacted but not willing to do anything.
