Steering Wheel problems of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Eight problems related to steering wheel have been reported for the 1997 GMC Sierra. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2002

While driving, intermittently steering wheel will have to much play in it and turn all the way around. This makes it difficult for the driver to steer vehicle, which could result in lost of control and cause an accident. Please provide more details. Ts.

2 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2000

The vechicle has 4-6 inches of play which is excessive for a low milage truck.

3 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2000

My truck was in fourteen months later for the same repair-I feel this is a safety issue- the dealership told me that they have replaced many of these sensors - I did not feel safe letting my wife drive my truck, especially at speeds over 45mph. No precise safety defect listed.

4 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 04/01/1998

In the process of making a left or right turn the steering wheel becomes loose with no resistance. Then, while trying to correct the steering the wheel gets tight, seems to have no power steering. Dealer has been contacted.

5 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 12/01/1997

Steering wheel fades out, moves in the direction of the turn, but does not impair the direction of the tires.

6 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 08/01/1997

When traveling at high rate of speed the steering wheel becomes very loose, causing the consumer to lose control of the vehicle for a short period. Consumer has contacted the dealer.

7 Steering Wheel problem

Failure Date: 03/24/1997

Steering wheel out of alignment.

8 Steering Wheel problem

The steering wheel column was loose and was able to move from side to side. Mechanic tightened the bolts.
