Tailgate Hinge problems of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Hauling fire wood and the cable on the tailgate broke. There was no damage, but if I had been hauling something large on the back with the tailgate down, I could have dropped part of a load in front of someone behind me.

Tail gate cables have failed due to rust, this is the 2nd set of cables that have failed I was loading hay on to the truck when the cables gave way I fell to the ground twisting my ankle. I have replaced the cables with the new style cables that were made due to a recall in 2003 of one year truck. The galvanized cables were used on more than the year recalled and are clearly of poor design. Gm is not willing to replace them free of charge because NHTSA has not issued a recall for my year truck I put NHTSA partly at fault for this for not recalling all years using this cable.

: the contact stated while driving 15mph, the tailgate cables broke and the tailgate fell down and struck the rear bumper. The contact purchased replacement cables from an authorized dealership and performed the repair. There is a NHTSA recall, # 06v066000, regarding the structure. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.

Consumer was backing a lawn tractor out of his truck and driver's side tailgate strap snapped in the middle. The strap was covered in plastic, couldn't see the condition the strap was actually in. Consumer stated that the hinge mechanism has twisted as a result.

Was loading a Honda rincon atv into the bed of a 1999 GMC serria pickup truck,using loading ramps attached to the tailgate. Tailgate cables broke while loading atv. Causing tailgate to slam down on rear bumper,damaging tailgate. This is the second time cables have broken. I replaced the broken cables with oem cables,and have old cables.

The cables on the tailgate of my 1999 GMC Sierra broke,throwing my wife and I to the ground. This event took place in houghton county michigan while my wife and I were grouse hunting. I am aware that there is a product safety recall on these cables, ut it does not include 1999 Sierra which makes no sense.

Tailgate cables have broken twice since I have purchased the truck new. Gm has recall model years 200 and up. The model change for this truck was in 1999. The recall should be extended to include the 1999 model year vehicles.

Tailgate cables failed constantly. Recall 04v129000 was issued, however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to model year.

Strap attached to tailgate corroded/rusted and snapped causing damage to tailgate and bed of truck.

The taligate support cable on my 1999 Sierra pickup failed. Fortunately only the one on the driver side did. I was standing on it at the time but did not get hurt. The 1999 should be included in the recall.

Tailgate cable snapped on r. H. Side, apparently corroded from inside out. No damage l. H. Cable held. Have not replaced either yet.

While loading the vehicle both tailgate straps snapped. Dealership repaired the problem once, but the consumer was still having the same problem.

Corrosion in tailgate restraint straps caused failure while sitting on tailgate to unload sewing machine. Minor injury to person. No damage to sewing machine. Minor damage to tailgate. Looking for replacement straps. (g. M. Dealer insists straps cannot be purchased seperately. Purchase of complete latch assembly required at 40 dollars per side).

Cable corroded and broke that holds the tailgate on my 1999 GMC Sierra pickup. Other cable is corroded ready to break. Can not put any load on tailgate for fear that it will fall and hit someone and hurt them.

Tailgate straps break for no reason. I have replaced them twice with in the past 4 years.

I was sitting on the tailgate of my 1999 GMC Sierra when one tailgate cable broke then the other one broke the next day when I opened the tailgate. I replaced both cables with gm replacement parts at my expense .

I complained to GMC directly about abs failure and reported it to atty. Gen of nys. I was told its normal wear in states with salt, funny that the paint is good to this day.

Problems relating to numerous breaks in the tail gate cables on the GMC Sierra. Reference odi 10113427. The consumer was injured 15 years ago when the tailgate on his Ford 150 failed. The consumer's current complaints is in reference to his 1999 GMC Sierra. This truck is on it's third set of tailgate cables in only 5 years. The rubber coating on the cables cracked over time which resulted on water and road salt seeping into the cracks. Over time the metal core rusted then broke. The consumer believes that the tailgate problem is not isolated to one manufacturer .
