Spare Tire Problems of GMC Sierra

See attached memorandum date June 3, 2005 memo #06032005-1 for items (1), (2), and (3) for item (3) parts on GMC truck still exist and are currently secured only by a tightened wire held in position by turn style torque system. Defective spare tire assembly bracket hold down and release system. System design provides for a potential road hazard should the wire assembly hold down wire becomes cut or broken when automobile is in motion on any highway operation. Existing problem discovered by aaa service maintenance repair service to put 2002 GMC Sierra truck 2gtec19t8211901122 back into operation after highway tire failure on major i5 highway in oceanside California. Damage to tires resulted in rupture of left rear tire manufactured by general tire. Defective tire was retained by sears repair service, laguna hills, California.

I own a 2001 GMC Sierra, I was driving from one job to the other when a person driving next to me flagged me down saying that I dropped my spare tire. I stopped and looked under my truck, I was missing my tire and the cable that was holding the spare tire was busted. Luckily the incident happened after school and speed limits were at 20mph. No one got hurt but if this would of happened while I was driving in a congested high speed road this could of caused a serious accident. The safty of all people are at risk of this happening as I experienced it myself. A 2001 vehicle should not have a part that can bust and drop a tire on the road. I took this report to champion GMC located in corpus christi texas. The man that attended me mel did nothing but give me a 200. 00 estimate for parts and labor repair. I believe that this part should be under recall before it causes a problem or death.

The spare tire cable under the vehicle snapped, causing the tire to fall to the ground.

Spare tire cannot be removed due to the tire pushing up on the tube that the tool goes into from the rear bumper, causing the tool to be misaligned with the spare tire winch. Consumer can not get emergency spare tire out of vehicle with tools that are provided by manufacturer due to a bent plastic shaft that was bent during assembly. Please provide further information.

Tire blowout while driving, spare tire would not release from carrier, as a result consumer had to purchase two new rear tires. Nlm.
