The contact owns a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500. When the brake pedal was depressed at various speeds, the vehicle vibrated without warning. While the vehicle was being serviced for NHTSA campaign number: 06e050000 (service brakes, air), the passenger side hub fractured and was unable to be repaired. The contact stated that the front driver side hub assembly was deemed after market and the repair was denied. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 322,566.
My son was driving his 2006 GMC sierra pickup, when the abs warning light illuminated, followed by the truck wanting to steer to the right. He investigated and found that the right front wheel was tilted inboard and decided to have the truck towed home. Today we removed the wheel, and found a total failure of the wheel hub assembly. This is a sealed unit that contains the wheel bearings, and has the wheel studs mounted to it also. Apparently this is not an item that can be serviced in the field, such as repacking of the bearings. Both wheel bearings were completely destroyed, and the only thing holding the wheel on was the brake caliper. We installed a new hub assembly and brake disc to correct the problem. Old parts are available.
