Engine failure at 12,000 miles.
Engine failure after passing pico test. Engine completely locked up on a busy highway without the ability to even put it in neutral. Yes, confirmed by dealer that there were metal shavings in the fluid. Inspected by authorized dealer. No lights came on in the vehicle prior to the engine failure.
Traveling northbound in the left lane on [xxx] approximately 1 mile prior to the [xxx] exit. I increased my speed to move to the right lane and exit. After moving the the right lane and signaling to exit the highway a notification appeared on the gauge cluster stating to shift to neutral and restart the engine. After coming to a complete stop at the stop light I attempted to restart and nothing happened. I contacted onstar for roadside assistance to get my truck and trailer towed and was informed they do not cover towing of the trailer. I accepted the tow of the truck and contacted the towing company who charged me $300 to tow my trailer 15 miles home. This happened late morning on Saturday and by Monday evening I was informed my engine seized and gm will be covering a replacement under warranty. My truck is less than two years old with 23k miles. The 6. 2l engine was inspected a couple months earlier for the engine recall and was deemed ok. Clearly the inspection process is not very robust. I was told I could be without my truck for 1wk, 2wks, a month, but they are not sure since I’m 4th in line for a new engine and the truck first in line has already been there a month. I was also told gm is showing inventory in michigan but the engines are not shipping. I’m currently waiting on a loaner vehicle but was told I cannot tow with the loaner vehicle which throws a wrench in my plans. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Driving normally ? brief stumble/sputter/deceleration ? engine died/no power ? check-engine light ? vehicle coasts with no throttle response ? would not restart, then restarted briefly with rough idle and immediately died. Reproduced. Towed. Dealer has not yet seen the vehicle. Inspection. No. Notification. Check engine light illuminated, truck automatically went into neutral. Safety. We were driving in traffic when problems occurred.
October 24, 2025 I had taken in my vehicle for recall 25v274 loss of motor power. Mine was deemed unaffected and given the oil change they were doing as part of that. Today it died while I was pulling a trailer with a rzr on it. I had drove about 90 miles with a stop midway when I did have the engine turned off. Then it just quit. My vehicle only has 13k miles on it. Not sure if police report was filed but they were called and there directing traffic because it stopped in a busy intersection. I had to be towed, and pay a separate fee to have the trailer towed. At 1000 miles on the truck it had to be taken in for an infotainment screen replacement.
Gm 6. 2l l87 was recalled. I took the truck in at 32,000 miles. Gm dealer perfromed a pico test, motor failed. Motor replaced with "new" crate motor. I was without a truck or loaner for 3 weeks. Dealer called me when new motor was almost complete. First they said it would be a couple more days because they started the "new" motor and it had no oil pressure. They contacted gm tec and they tested it again, it tested with too-high of oil pressure. Gm then instructed them to replace the oil pump on the "new" motor. I got the truck back a week later after being in the shop 3 weeks. I drove a total of 1,200 miles, 400 miles we're highway in one long trip. The balance was local. I went to start the truck one morning after it sat all weekend and the "new" motor was knocking like an old diesel. I video'ed it and sent to my service advisior, I was advised to bring it back again. Vehicle has been at dealer now 9 days, dealer took oil sample from "new" motor, it was found to have metallic matter in the oil. They contacted gm tec again, it took gm tec 3 days to respond, last Friday gm tec said pull the oil pan and take pictures. As of the typing of this email I have no loaner because there's a wait list for loaners, gm will only reimburse me $25/day for a rental and a truck rental is $105/day which I refuse to pay for gm's defects out of my pocket.
Engine seized while driving. Vehicle was inoperable.
I was driving and lost engine power in the left lane of a freeway, cut across traffic and coasted to the shoulder. Had truck 6' off of road, though with semis and cars passing at 70mph, I left and waited in the ditch for the tow truck. The electronics worked, but the engine was dead and would not start. When the tow truck arrived, the wheels were locked up and they used rollers to haul the truck to the dealership. After the dealer inspected the truck, they sent a message saying they could not turn the engine over by hand. The engine had metal shavings in the oil filter and after removing a valve cover, found metal contamination circulated throughout the engine. The engine, radiator, oil cooler lone, and battery junction box all require replacement. This truck has a 6. 2l l87 engine, and the dealer has had several other vehicles with the same blown engine failure. The truck was in for the recall on this issue about a month before the engine went out, they placed a pico scope in the engine to check the drive shaft, and then added a heavier oil. No warning lights came on until the engine died.
Engine failure on March 8, 2026. 2024 sierra denali 1500 VIN [xxx] prior to this incident, the vehicle was taken to the same dealer due to the safety recall. The engine was inspected on November 12, 2025, and I was told that it "passed," with the remedy being a change in oil viscosity. I was driving on March 8, 2026, when I heard some odd noises (clanking and knocking). Shortly thereafter, the engine just stopped in the middle of the road. It would not restart, and as a result, I couldn't put it in neutral to roll it out of the roadway. It remained stuck in park. I was stuck for 2+ hours in the rain, waiting for a flatbed wrecker. Cars were unable to pass in either direction. When the tow truck arrived, I was told it had to be dragged on to the flatbed with sleds due to the transmission being stuck in park. The truck was taken to carl black GMC in roswell, GA. On Monday they confirmed that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The repair was completed, and I picked up the vehicle on Friday, March 13. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
My GMC sierra with 40000 miles the check engine light turn on and was steady on when driving on the highway I loose a power on the vehicle for a few seconds and almost a semi truck behind me hit me because I don’t have any power on the vehicle, I stop on a safe place and try to start the vehicle again immediately call dealer for appointment an start drive to home. The lady on general motors say I can drive safe with my vehicle but I don’t feel safe because nothing on the onstar computer works the emergency button and gps it’s not working at all.
Engine failure. I was driving down the highway pulling a trailer and the rpms raced up and I instantly lost power. Had to try and get over to the right lane/shoulder after losing all power. Extremely scary situation going 75mph on a 3 lane highway in the left lane. Luckily I made it to a safe spot but once there, I could start the truck. It. Would sit a power cycle. Tow truck couldn’t get it into neutral so had to drag it up the flat bed. After being towed to dealer they confirmed the engine was shot and ordered a new one on March 9th. We are now over 30 days without my truck. This has not been inspected by anyone besides the dealership it was towed to and the dealership I bought the truck from and use for service. My truck was in the shop many times prior to this. Had to have the cam shaft replaced before the recall fix was published to dealerships. Once fixed my wife picked it up with my child and once they left the dealership it started vigorously shaking again and she brought it back to be told it was a fault plug and plug wire. Once our VIN came up for recall it passed the test and they put new oil in and sent me on my way. A couple weeks later it was acting strange again and I brought it back for them to again say it was a faulty plug/wire. About two weeks after this is when the engine locked up. Truck has 38,000 miles and doesn’t feel safe for our family. What can we do?!.
2024 1500 denali 3. 0 duramax diesel engine failed at 57,000 miles. Engine is out of spec per dealer inspection, has an audible ticking noise, an additional audible metal on metal noise, and loss of power. New 3. 0 engine is on back order due to a large volume of engine failures and has no eta on when it will arrive.
My 2024 GMC Sierra 1500's engine has gone bad, and needs to be replace after only 71,000 miles, and this is only 90 day after already replacing the transmission.
Had recently turned 40,000 miles and was driving down a highway; ,lost all power had to get towed to dealership. Was told engine went out, and had to get another. Would be weeks, still no engine. Was towed 3/2/2026. Common problem finding out, was a 90k vehicle unacceptable!.
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle shut off while making a turn and started shaking abnormally. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated and the contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and was diagnosed, and it was determined that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 25,524.
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 25v274000 (engine and engine cooling); and the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that no repair was needed, upon inspection. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired free of charge. The contact related the failure to NHTSA action number: rq26001 (engine). The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no vehicle rental assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
I was driving on the highway with the cruise control engaged. An instruction came on the information center telling me to push the start button, while I was driving at highway speeds. Then the transmission downshifted numerous times violently the last few times. By the tachometer the engine was doing 6000 rpm. I pulled over and the start button would not shut down the engine until about the third time I pushed it. Then it would not restart. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership and they told me that they had gotten the truck to start but that the engine seized while pulling it into the repair bay. I had followed the recall directions that they had sent me for the recall on the 6. 2 liter and they said that mine was fine and that I should use thicker oil from now on. I had done that but still had ths failure, which as a person that has worked on mechanical equipment my whole life, this failure is violent.
I get alert saying low oil pressure and the truck turned it's self off and won't start back up. And I got car's and 18 wheelers coming up from behind. They're not paying attention to my emergency lights flashing. It did this twice on me, first time in my neighborhood and the second time on major road with a lot of traffic. I call GMC corporate office and they know about the recall on the 2024 GMC sierra engine cutting off. I was told I need to get a picture or video of the dashboard say low oil pressure and video with me trying to start it back up. I guess I'll have to get hit or kill for them to replace the engine. I have no documentation because I have no picture or video. Didn't know I was supposed to take a picture or video.
The engine locked up 2 months after recall inspection. There was no lights or warnings. Towed into dealer, they inspected it and said lower end failed. Dealer replaced engine.
The engine lost power on the hwy. Resulted in having to tow the vehicle to the dealership for an engine replacement. The truck is a 2024 with only 20k miles. There were no alerts within the interior to make me aware there was a problem. The engineer starting make a knocking sound at the time of failure. I had just gotten off the interstate when it failed. I spoke to a representative at the dealership and they informed me that the same engine will be installed, with a new oil type. I'm writing this given this will diminish the value of the truck, and I have to be worried about the engine failure happening again. Next time it could happen on the interstate with loss of power. I can't trust that to happen.
1) in may of 2025 I attempted to have the dealership complete the recall which the gm app told me to schedule. Related to the l87 engine failure. According to their own document my engine manufacture date was to be replaced a defective. The dealer told me that there was "no resolution for the issue and turned me away. (see attachments) 2) in June gm changed the procedure adding the pico test. (see attachment) 3) in October I received the official recall notice and scheduled the test. At the prior service visit I had the dealer give me back the old oil filter. I took it apart and found metal fillings in it. I reported this to the dealer. The truck had the pico test and passed. They told me that "the filter did its job and the metal in it was normal wear and tear". They replaced the oil cap and filled it with thicker oil. I was sent on my way, told to call if I had any issues. 4) on 2-6-25 while driving 65 mph on the highway, the engine just shut off without warning. The dash displayed "press start again" while I was traveling at 65mph. I was able to pull to the side and restart the engine. Service was scheduled and performed on 2-10-26. They found no codes in the computer and could not find the issue. 5) on 2-13-26 while driving 75 on the interstate the engine stopped, the display read "press start again". I was able to coast through traffic and got to the shoulder. After some time and playing with the buttons I was able to get the truck into park. Then I started the engine. I made it off the freeway and onto a side road. I drove a few miles further and stopped for a stop sign. The truck was again dead, displaying "press start again". After several attempts and my vehicle in traffic, I got it to start. It drove for a mile more and the truck was dead. I had it towed to the dealership where they are working in it. It requires a new engine. 6) gm failed and endangered my family while traveling at freeway speeds. They should buy back their failure.
On 5 Feb 2026 I was starting my 4-hour drive back home. 15 minutes into my drive my truck lost power, several lights and the engine light came on. Truck was sputtering and making harsh engine noises and shut off on me. I was forced to exit loop 2 (a major highway). Once I was able to restate the truck I went straight to the dealership. This truck had the recall done 15 oct 2025. However, this issues still occurred. The motor gave out. Truck is 83k in mileage. Well under 100k. Cost estimate is $6. 5k. The technician informed me that a lifter collapsed in cylinder 5. This is clearly still part of the GMC recall issue for the 6. 2l engines. What is my next step in this process. If I knew there was a major issue with these trucks, I probably would not have purchased it. All maintenance has been done with same dealership to keep all service records excess able.
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 67 mph, the transmission shifted to neutral(n) unexpectedly. In addition, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact attempted to drive the vehicle off the road. A passerby slowed down and allowed the contact to move over to the side of the road. The engine seized, and the vehicle stalled between the shoulder and the line of the left lane. The check engine warning light illuminated, and the messages "battery low" and "reducing features to save battery" were displayed on the instrument panel. The contact called a friend who towed the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer was informed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The contact stated that due to the failure, the contact no longer felt safe while driving the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,680.
My truck started knocking and while driving home and it died on me in the middle of a busy street and would not start. I waved down a police officer and he kept me safe from cars hitting from behind. Come to find out it was the bearing rod and now I’m getting my engine replaced. My truck is a 2024 GMC sierra with 9,000 miles on it.
Lifter failure in 5. 3 liter v8 causing extended repair.
While traveling 60 mph on a divided highway went to pass another vehicle. Had no throttle response the engine had completely turned off, locked up seized up. I’m not sure what caused the engine to just lose all power. Had to go back to the lane and luckily there was a turnoff where I was able to turn off the highway.
While traveling down the highway at approximately 60-65mph I pressed the accelerator to change lanes and pass a tractor trailer when it felt like my transmission slipped very abruptly. There was a very noticeable power loss and the truck would not accelerate. Then I noticed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. No check engine light or any other indications on the dash to let me know there was a problem. I began to try and merge to the right of the highway to get off which was not easy do to the power loss and heavy traffic on the highway at the time. I made it to the right lane to exit the highway and when I slowed down the engine died and I had to coast to a stop luckily on an exit ramp. The truck was towed to a dealership and they state that I will need a new engine. I know this issue is already well documented with the gm 6. 2l engines but I is very unsettling that the engine just died on the highway at highway speeds and no indications.
Post recall l87 I had a catasrophic engine failure. 70 mph highway engine seized lost propulsion. 38000 miles. No warning, engine has been replaced by gm.
I passed the recall inspection on 12/17/2025 and the higher viscosity oil was put into my vehicle. On 12/25/2025 my vehicle's engine shut off while I was traveling on the highway (I-25). The vehicle went into to neutral and I had to pull over to the side of the highway without power. The vehicle started again and as I was merging onto the highway it shut down again. The truck started again and I was able to drive it home. There were no codes found when I took it in for service on 12/26/2025. On 01/24/2026 I was driving on the highway (us-40) and I had complete engine failure. I had to get my vehicle towed to the service center and a new motor was installed. On March 27th the vehicle's engine shut off again while driving on the highway (us-191). There were no codes or check engine lights on this time either. The service records state that the starter mount stud was loose.
2024 GMC engine 6. 2 that failed had the recall test done and a couple of mounts later engine started making loud knocking sound its at the shop now getting a new engine in been at the shop for about 3 weeks now.
My truck has not been added to the 6. 2 engine recall. I have several cases of friends and acquaintances who have had multiple engine failures (including replacements)with this same engine where their trucks shut down in the middle of the highway. I’ve tried speaking with Gmcs customer warranty department to get details on why my engine has not been recalled and no one including them, my selling dealer or my service dealer can explain why it has not been recalled. I do not feel safe driving this truck and I’ve come to the point where I do not feel GMC has been honest with me about this engine. I’m actively reading dozens and dozens of cases each week where some GMC trucks are on their 3 or more engine. (engines produced in 2025 and late 2024). Facebook page called gm 6. 2l engine and bearing failure 2019-2024 discussion group has nearly 5,000 active members on it. I’m even getting conflicting information form GMC and dealers on what oil the truck should have.
12/7/2025 8:48 am engine lost propulsion while driving 35mph enroute to residence. The engine cut off and at the same time we saw a cloud of blue smoke trailing the vehicle. The engine refired and propulsion resumed. I immediately looked at the dash display for an indicator light resulting from the lack of propulsion. There were no unusual indicator lights or messages but the tachometer needle dropped about an inch and went back up again rapidly. The engine had resumed running. This loss of propulsion and resumption occurred two more times while my foot was off the accelerator. After the third incident the vehicle seemed to be running normally. I stated we had only about two miles to get home and I hope we make it. The next day I called deluz service department to notify them of the incident. I left a message but my call was not returned. I updated service staff of the new incident when I dropped the vehicle off for a previously scheduled appointment on 12/11/25.
On Dec 4, 2025, my wife was driving at night on a texas road going 75mph. Her truck died while driving and the truck shifted into neutral and computer said to restart. When she did, all electrical power was lost including headlights while traveling at 75mph at night. Vehicle eventually was started after she got to the side of the road. A check engine light was present. She made it to her destination with no further problems. Vehicle was taken to the dealership the next day. They said that she may have catastrophic engine failure that is common on the 6. 2 liter gm motors.
Https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/rcl/2025/rcrit-25v274-6343. Pdf safety recall n252494001 l87 engine loss of propulsion I am currently writing due to my vehicle falling under the guidelines of this recall but it is not listed in the recalls. I have been in contacts with gm directly as they say because it is not listed on NHTSA as a saftey recall they will not cover the cost. I am writing to try to get this listed as I currently can not get an oil change at any location but a gm dealer because it is listed in the systems.
On 29 November 2025 at approximately 1700hrs, I was driving my blue 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 at4x outside of pampa, TX. As I was driving to my hunting location, my truck turned itself off and placed itself in neutral. I was driving about 30 mph down a single farm road with another vehicle approaching me from the front. I was unable to pull to the side due to farmland. I was able to flash my lights to get the other vehicle to slow down before having an incident. During this time, I had to let the truck slow down to a stop. My vehicle was already inspected for the engine recall and I was informed I had nothing to worry about. That everything was good. The truck is at greg lair in canyon, TX. It did put me and my passenger as risk. I did not receive any warning before my truck turned off. The dealer confirmed today that the engine had seized. The engine was inspected during the summer before this issue. I had not warning when this happened. Was just driving and lost power. Looked down at the display and it stated to restart engine. I noticed my truck was in neutral when it came to a stop.
