Do not know if it was the front or rear brakes that were lost when driving. Drove carefully to dealership and had a corroded brake line replaced that had a hole or holes in it.

The parking brake cable broke when putting our 2004 1500 GMC sierra into park. The vehicle can no longer be parked at an angle or it will roll. A part has been ordered but the vehicle has not been repaired yet. GMC was contacted but we were told that a recall for a similar situation only effects vehicles made in 1999-2002.

The parking brake on my 2000 GMC sierra will not hold. I have adjusted both the park brake shoes and cable, but it will still not hold the truck. This is the same issue that led to a recall on GMC and Chevrolet pick-ups with manual transmissions, but the trucks equipped with automatic transmissions were not included. However, the park brake must be in working order to pass the nc safety inspection.

Brake failure due to brake fluid leaking from rusted out brake lines.
2003 GMC Sierra 1500 pu truck - corroded and failing hydraulic brake lines. This truck was purchased new by me in October 2003, and now has only 23,700 miles on it. A line near the fuel tank, which feeds the rear wheel calipers, rusted through in January 2009. Other lines in numerous locations also show signs of corrosion which will lead to future failures. Mechanics in this area tell me this is very common, even on some newer GMC (and similar Chevrolet) vehicles. Some of these mechanics replace the faulty lines with tubing which is more corrosion-resistant than provided by the manufacturer. A couple of weeks ago, one of the rear, rear wheel emergency brake cables on this vehicle also failed due to corrosion, and the other one showed signs of the same failure impending. Both were replaced. A serious, fundamental and compound hazard exists under this scenario. The manufacturer should be required to recall thee vehicles and replace all critical brake components subject to corrosive failures with corrosion-proof (or at least highly corrosion-resistant) parts.

Fuel gauge acting very erratic and vehicle will not start have noticed online that many GMC sierra owners of similar years have experienced same problems very expensive to repair.
Parking brake wore out by itself and failed to work. Will not function as designed. Had $400 repairs made to brake.
Similar to NHTSA: 05v161000 my 2002 GMC sierra with automatic tranny experiences the very same premature parking brake wear. Wear is uneven and just in 2 little places instead of even wear on whole shoe. Brake wears very quickly then will not hold putting undue stress and causing failure of parking pawl in automatic tranny. Gm refused to do anything. Gm will not fix my vehicle or apply recall since I do not have manual tranny. If anything, automatic tranny is worse since it damages tranny due to stress on pawl since parking brake does not hold vehicle. When brake shoes were replaced, they worked for very short period of time. $250 to replace and I was told it was a known problem and I would be wasting my money because they would wear out quickly again. Odd that shoes wear when vehicle typically is not moving when brake is applied or released.

The contact owns a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500. The cable stop has fallen off the emergency brake release cable. The contact stated that he has been driving without an emergency brake ever since. The dealer stated that there were no recalls for this failure. The failure mileage was 33,000. Updated 06/03/bf the consumer also stated the abs activated when it shouldn't have. Updated 06/04/10.
2002 GMC sierra with automatic transmission has both the abs problems that have a recall only along east coast states and the parking brake problem that has a recall for manual transmissions.
The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact received a recall notice in September of 2006 for the abs. The dealer kept the vehicle for a month and performed the recall repair. Since the repair, the vehicle does not roll back while parked on an incline with the emergency brake engaged; however, it rolls back on level ground. The contact repaired the rotors and the brake system himself in November of 2007 because the rotors were corroding, which caused the brakes to pulsate. The dealer would not state whether the VIN was included in NHTSA campaign id number 05v161000 (parking brake). The failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 34,503. Updated 05/19/08. The consumer stated there was an accident and there was damage to his vehicle. Updated 05/19/08.
Noticed that parking brake doesn't work anymore. (looked on line and noticed that there was a recall for manual transmission but not for automatic. Also noticed a lot of people have the same problem. I believe it is a safety issue even with an automatic since people pull trailers and park on inclines setting the parking brake.
The contact owns a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500. On August 15, 2007, the contact's vehicle failed inspection due to the parking brake not engaging. He stated that the emergency brake light was illuminated, which indicated that it was engaged. The vehicle has not been repaired or diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 110,000.
Complete emergency brake failure. The e-brake does not hold on even a slight incline. Further research shows that this is a common complaint by GMC truck owners on the internet. There was a recall for the vehicles with manual transmissions, but not vehicles with automatic transmissions. This does not make sense. . .
Vehicle had less than 20,000 miles when right rear brake disc wore completely out. Had to replace again at 40,000 miles. This only affects the right rear brake. Truck has automatic transmission and parking brake has never been used, and is completely worn out. I know that there is a recall on manual trans mission, but seems there is also a problem on the automatic.
Failure of parking brake on 2002 GMC sierra pickup. During state inspection it was found to be unable to hold. It was found that the adjustments screws on both rear emergency brakes were fully disengaged, so this meant that they had backed off. They were against the stops. They were adjusted back up, but this will most likely happen again. I am a mechanic and know this is a defect that could cause deaths if this is not corrected. The car inspection center where the truck was inspected said there is a manufacturing defect that the dealers know is bad, but they do nothing to correct the defect. He said they see a large number of GMC truck that the parking brakes is defective. (many of the people also say they never use the parking brake.
Parking brake failure on 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd 4dr ext cab w/ automatic trans. Due to excessive wear of friction linings due to defect in release mechanism. Have 50k miles on vehicle & emergency brake shoes have worn into rotors. The lack of a working parking brake has caused the transmission to lock in park when on an incline, especially when towing. Vehicle will not pass state inspection because of this. Reference NHTSA #pe03057, #ea04011.
Premature brake failure due to rotors rusting, rear rotors rusted and wore pads out front brake pads worn out on inside only, parking brake worn out on drivers side inoperable on passenger side. All pads and rotors needed to be replaced, rotors too delaminated to turn, parking brake pads replaced too. All parts available. 800 dollars to repair.
: the contact stated when the gears were shifted into drive; the parking brake would not stop the vehicle from rolling forward. The manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed the vehicle was not included in a recall.
Parking brake fails to hold vehicle from rolling. Dealer stated parking brake pads were worn and damaged rear rotors of disk brake system. He stated that there was a recall for this problem but not for my vehicles VIN.
Parking brake did not hold allowing vehicle to roll away and strike parking barrier. Repairs were made totaling $434. 37 parts replaced were, rusting parking brake backing plates, parking brake shoes and related hardware.
: the contact stated while attempting to use the parking brake, the vehicle started rolling. The dealership determined the parking failed due to the friction material on the parking brake being worn away. The parking brake eroded the rotor to the point where the rotor needed to be replaced. There was a NHTSA recall, # 05v161000 regarding the parking brake . The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.
Parking brake failed to hold vehicle. Ref: NHTSA campaign id number# 05v161000.
Since the vehicle was new, the parking brake pedal has been soft (goes to the floor when pressed), and parking brakes have failed to hold vehicle on inclines of greater than 25 - 30 degrees. I have had the vehicle in the shop and have spent hundreds of dollars trying to fix with adjustment and new parts; all resulted in little or no success. One occasion the truck actually rolled down a hill with the parking brake set. Fortunately, no damage or injuries. I don't trust the p-brake at all; I always chock the tires when parked on any incline.
The emergency brakes on my truck have only been actually used 4-5 times. They do not hold and I'm told will not pass my annual safety inspection. I have been told by several mechanics ( and confidentially by a service rep at a dealer) that the design of the GMC and Chevrolet emergency brake system is poorly designed and whether engaged or not , the brakeshoes are continously in contact w/the drums, causing them to wear out very quickly - becoming completely useless and very expensive to repare and replace - not to mention very dangerous.
2003 GMC sierra truck, steering, has a clunking noise started about 5,000 miles, told by mechanic to take to a dealer, was not the first time he had heard of this problem and was not something he wanted to undertake due to liability, another problem with to much play or (slap) in the drive shaft, took it to dealer they replaced drive shaft, did not solve problem , so apparently they did not know how to solve problem and basically were grabbing at straws, I still have problem, front running lights keep burning out (electrical problem).
The caller stated the parking brake did not hold. There was a recall on the vehicle with a manual transmission, but not on the automatic transmission. Dealer said they would look at it, and they would change the parking brake with one that has been designed differently. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet. Caller indicated that the problem has been getting worse over the past three years. Inspector told caller he needed to get problem fixed or next year it will probably not pass inspection. Truck is a sierra c15.
Parking brake on 2002 GMC failed repeatedly. The parking brake pedal went to the floor. First told this was normal. Second complaint brakes were adjusted. Third complaint cause was found. The brake failed to completely release. The brake wore out prematurely and overheated. The problem continued after repeated attempts to repair. The rear axles needed replacement due to overheating/damage to seals and bearings. Use of four wheel drive with rear brakes locked transferred torque to front steering knuckle which required replacement. A warped rear brake backing plate has been replaced due to excessive heat. The vehicle has 70,000 miles. The parking brakes did not work again and need repair with the outcome unknown.
My parking brake never worked.
2000 GMC pickup emergency parking brake never worked since purchased new yet dealer always passes it for state inspection.
Consumer states while parked on an incline, the parking brakes failed to hold, vehicle rolled forward, parking brakes shoes were worn excessively, metal to metal, causing damage to rotor.
