1 Steering Noise problem of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 04/08/2021

The vehicle was in motion and when traveling (in motioni) at a low speed turning left with a sharp left turn there is a popping noise in the steering column section that you can both hear and feel. In fact, there has been occasion when it appeared to me that the steering wheel appeared to somewhat stick or briefly freeze, again in this left a hard left turn at a slow speed. I took this vehicle to the local gm dealer today, the service manager evidenced the same issue; although, he did not know what is causing the problem suggesting that I return the vehicle for their service and review over a day when I can leave the vehicle with them.

2 Steering Noise problem of the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 11/26/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving 10 mph, the contact pulled into his driveway and heard an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. The contact took the vehicle to garber Buick GMC (5255 us-1, fort pierce, FL 34982, (772)467-0835) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle back to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that an investigation would take place to determine the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 27,548.

3 Steering Noise problem of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/17/2018

When the vehicle had less than 10,000 miles I brought it to the dealer to inspect the steering because of a binding/clunking noise while turning the steering wheel at a stop or slow speed. The dealership was unable to locate the noise at that time. Around 17. 000 miles, the noise had gotten worse and they were able to locate it and replaced the steering box as well as the rack and pinion steering. Again, a little after 30,000 miles the noise was back but intermittent. The dealership did not hear it and said the steering was fine. Yesterday, with 40,000 miles, the dealership said the steering gear box needed to be replaced again as something is binding inside on the replacement steering box. Gm is denying this issue yet my research shows many people with the 2014 GMC sierra have or have had this problem. The one technician even told me his steering gear box on his 2014 1500 sierra had the same problem and compley failed. My research shows that this electronic gear box was introduced in 2014 and changed for a different steering box in 2015 models. An apparent acknowledgment of the problem.

5 Steering Noise problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/18/2010

2003 GMC half ton sierra truck. 3 time since 2003 that I've had to take it in for clunking noise felt thru steering wheel. Lubed a couple times then replaced the intermediate steering shaft. Still no guarantees that it won't happen again. Also very hard to steer when braking and brakes don't respond well when applied quickly. The first time the intermediate steering shaft needed attention the truck only had 15,000 miles on it. The second time was 30,000 miles and the last time was 45,000 miles and occurred in March 2010.

6 Steering Noise problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

Clunking noise and vibration in steering column at low speeds on bumpy roads, especially when turning corners. Feels like serious front-end mechanical problems. Current mileage on my 2003 GMC sierra is 60,000. I learned from gm that the intermediate steering shaft had already been replaced at 24,000 miles under warranty, but it needed replacing again. $207 for new shaft and $92 labor. New, improved part # is 19153614. If gm knew the original shaft was defective, why didn't they have to recall it?.

Failure Date: 05/28/2006

My 2004 GMC pickup truck has a knocking noise and clunk in the steering column. It started around 30k miles and has gotten steadily worse over the course of ownership. I did some searching on the internet and it seems gm has know about this problem on numerous models over the course of about 6 years. 00-02-35-003m Jan 07 models: 2002-2006 Cadillac escalade models 1999-2007 Chevrolet silverado models (classic) 2000-2006 Chevrolet suburban, tahoe models 2002-2006 Chevrolet avalanche 1999-2007 GMC sierra models (classic) 2000-2006 GMC yukon, yukon xl models 2003-2006 hummer h2 condition some customers may comment on a clunk-type noise coming from under the hood that also can be felt in the steering wheel. These conditions may be more noticeable when turning at low speeds on rough road surfaces. Diagnostic tips intermediate shaft clunk -- intermediate shaft clunk is heard and felt in the steering wheel and/or steering column area, typically while driving on rough road surfaces with steering wheel input. Important: I-shaft p/n 19155614 has been designed to replace previous designed dampened and non-dampened I-shafts. The physical difference in the yoke size will accommodate all vehicles listed in this bulletin. Replace the steering column upper intermediate shaft with an improved design shaft that will eliminate the clunk noise using the procedure listed below. Gm knows about the problem and it should be a recall item. Gm used the same parts on my truck that were being replaced under warranty when my truck sold. They should have upgraded the parts on the new truck because they knew they were failing. Gm knew the joints were failing and kept using a failing part for 4 years on new trucks and expect the owners to pay for bad parts.
