3 Power Train problem of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 08/15/2025

While driving on the interstate we were exiting to pull into a rest area while slowing down the rear wheels momentarily locked up and the truck downshifted hard and abruptly with that happening the check engine light came on along with a decreased power message. We pulled into a parking spot during so we tried to shit into reverse and it didn’t want to shift into reverse, we tried this for a while. We finally got it into reverse and we were able to back out of the parking spot. When we tried shifting to drive we encountered the same issue. The vehicle did not want to go into drive. Once finally into drive it did not want to shift into any higher gears. It was essentially stuck in one of the gears. We made it to a GMC dealer on the next exit -we drove on the side of the interstate to get there- when we arrived we had them run the codes and they told us it was a transmission control valve which GMC has had a major recall on. While we had this “fixed” at a different dealership previously in March of 2025 it only entailed “updating the software” involving the transmission control valve. We had to leave the truck at the GMC dealer that we were able to ‘limp’ to in crestview FL. We’ve been told our truck now needs an entirely new transmission that is going to cost $7,000. We had a similar issue right after the “software update for the transmission control valve” on March 20, 2025. The software was updated roughly a week before that incident which seemed to have cleared itself because it was momentarily and never happened again until now. Our safety was at risk because we had to drive on the side of the interstate to get to a shop because we were out of town and a tow truck was going to cost between 600-1000 dollars to get home.

4 Power Train problem of the 2024 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 07/26/2025

I'm reaching out for urgent help regarding my 2024 GMC at4, which is currently at newby Buick GMC in st. George, utah, with a transmission failure that occurred on Saturday, [xxx]. While returning from a horse show in ogden, utah, the truck began to experience severe transmission issues near santaquin, utah, around 5:30 p. M. Just before reaching santaquin, the truck jerked violently three times-so hard that I immediately checked the camera system inside my horse trailer to make sure one of my horses hadn't gone down. That's how intense the jolt was. I pulled into a gas station in santaquin and called the dealership right away. At the time, I had three horses on board, it was nearly 100 degrees, and I was hauling a large living quarters horse trailer. The service manager was initially unavailable, but he returned my call shortly and advised me to continue driving to st. George at a steady speed if the truck could manage it. He also warned that it might go into limp mode, and in that case, I'd just be traveling very slowly. My husband was on standby in case he needed to meet me halfway, but I was hopeful that I could make it to at least hurricane, utah. I was able to access my GMC app on my phone at the time and confirmed to him that the transmission check light was on, and I was receiving a warning notification on the app indicating there was a transmission issue. I was able to limp the truck as far as hurricane, where my husband met me. We unloaded the horses into stalls and took both trucks into st. George that night to drop the at4 off at the dealership. On Monday morning, I contacted the dealership for an update and was informed that the issue was likely related to the transmission valve, and that the required part is on national back order-with an estimated delay of two months or more, but no confirmed eta. This has been my first GMC diesel. I've always driven Dodge trucks. Over a year ago, I saw the new color GMC released and kept telling my husband how amazi information redacted pursuant to the freedom o.

6 Power Train problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 06/01/2025

My rear wheels randomly lock up and truck violently shakes. It does it randomly in very long trips so gm and every dealer I've brought it to just says that "they cant help me because they cant get it to replicate. Had the same issue with my 2020 and it has an open recall for the exact same thing. This is very dangerous and is going to get someone hurt one day if gm isn't help responsible and fixed their valve body failures for all of the 10l1000 l5ps. Not just 2020-2022. . . . It's all of them. 2020-2025!!!.

13 Power Train problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 04/15/2025

Formal complaint against general motors and dealership – ongoing warranty issue and vehicle inoperability to whom it may concern, I am writing to formally escalate a serious and unresolved issue regarding my vehicle, and the lack of meaningful action taken by both general motors (gm) and an authorized dealership. My case is not isolated, it mirrors the experience of thousands of other gm customers facing the same known mechanical defect, as widely documented in online forums and communities. On February 25, 2025, I purchased a used 2023 GMC Sierra 3500 denali with approximately 25,000 miles from a dealership. The vehicle included the original factory warranty, and I also purchased an extended warranty for additional coverage. On April 25, 2025, at approximately 26,000 miles, the truck unexpectedly entered limp mode and the check engine light came on while I was driving with my children. Please note—this truck is equipped with the allison transmission, which is marketed as one of the most reliable transmissions available. I immediately took the vehicle to blade Chevrolet in mount vernon wa, the nearest dealership, where it remained for nearly a week before a diagnostic was completed. I was informed by the lead mechanic, jason visten, that the issue was a failed valve body solenoid #1—a component he clearly identified as a known and widespread issue within gm’s system. Mr. Visten further stated that gm has not been responsive to the dealership's requests for this part, which is currently on national backorder with no estimated timeline for availability. I was even told this specific part is being built for new vehicle production and are being prioritized over parts needed for warranty repairs, leaving my truck unusable and indefinitely sidelined for up to a year per blade Chevrolet. I contacted gm customer service directly and received the same generic response. Also worth mentioning I almost got rear ended cause of limp mode activation and transmission locked up.

14 Power Train problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 04/01/2025

My truck has the shift to park issue and won’t allow me to shut the vehicle ignition off and I cannot shut the vehicle ignition off and it is unsafe and keeps me trapped in my vehicle. I have noticed that it is a common issue and recall on many GMC trucks and I took it to the dealership and they are not wanting to cover it with my two warranties I have on the truck and my vehicle is unsafe. I cannot park the vehicle and shut it off. When I go to put the truck in park on shift column lever, it says shift to park on dash and I turn it on and move shifter to drive and neutral and the vehicle still won’t allow me to shut it off and it shows the same issue. . The issue just began out of no where.

15 Power Train problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 03/27/2025

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 3500. The contact stated that while hauling a trailer and driving approximately 40 mph, the contact attempted to merge into traffic and the message "restricted power mode" was displayed. During the failure the transmission failed to properly shift into a higher gear, and the vehicle failed to exceed 67 mph. The contact stated that later while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the transmission valve body was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 33,800.

16 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Parts distribution disconnect.

17 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 02/09/2025

Valve body failed while pulling my camper down the interstate. Transmission began to have issues and locked up on us while driving. Luckily I was able to avoid any accidents. Had truck towed to a private transmission shop to have the transmission repaired. Shop advised the failure was due to the faulty valve body.

18 Power Train problem of the 2024 GMC Sierra 3500

The vehicle was not repaired and remained out of the contact's state of residence. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and covered vehicle rental expenses that allowed the contact to return to their residence. The contact stated that the vehicle was used for load transportation, and the failure had caused both the contact and her husband to be stranded while delivering loads, which caused lodging expenses and loss of wages. The failure mileage was unknown.

19 Power Train problem of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 01/14/2025

The transmission failed which stemmed from the faulty (recently recalled valve body). General motors has been contacted and there is no transmission in sight and is not able to provide an eta. They are also not willing to cover the catastrophic failure because I am outside of my warranty terms. The dealership has inspected and concluded a whole new transmission is recommended. The vehicle has been in their possible for nearly one (1) month.

20 Power Train problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 01/12/2025

Transmission is locking up and making rear wheels violently shake on the highway at high speeds. There is a TSB for the trans valve body on 2020-2022 but it's doing the same for my year and every year with the new 10 speed allison. It will put your vehicle in power reduce mode as well. I've had a 2020 do it and now my 2023. Gm said there is no issue unless they can duplicate it and it does it randomly. So ridiculous for a $90k truck to have issues and then not be able to help.

21 Power Train problem of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

• what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the issue appears to be with the gear shifter assembly and/or park position sensor within the power train system. The vehicle fails to detect that it is in “park,” even when the gear lever is physically in the park position. Yes, the vehicle and component are available for inspection upon request. ? • how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? this malfunction prevents the vehicle from shutting off properly and displays a “shift to park” message even when parked. This creates a risk of the vehicle rolling away if the parking brake is not engaged and prevents secure shutdown, potentially draining the battery or creating confusion in an emergency. It compromises both driver and public safety. ? • has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes, the issue was reproduced and acknowledged by a certified GMC dealership service department. They noted it is a known issue affecting other gm vehicles but stated there is no open recall or warranty extension currently available for my specific model. ? • has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? the vehicle has only been inspected by a GMC-certified dealership. No inspection has been conducted by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives at this time. ? • were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? yes, a “shift to park” message appears on the dash even when the shifter is correctly placed in the park position. This message began appearing intermittently and has now become a consistent issue over the past few weeks.

22 Power Train problem of the 2024 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

Car will not turn off and will display "shift to park". Similar recall on other models. This has gotten worse and happens most of the time now.

23 Power Train problem of the 2024 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 12/13/2024

Breaks and/or drive train. It is available for inspection. 1) breaks sink causing slowed break time and decreased breaking ability. If the breaks are "pumped", more often than not, they will come back up to full pedal. However, in an emergency breaking situation, there is not time to "pump" the breaks. I was nearly in an accident recently when the break pedal would not stop the truck in time, due to the soft break pedal. I literally had to steer to the shoulder of the road. 2) when placing transmission in drive or reverse from the park position, then taking foot off of break pedal, there is about a 1 - 2 foot roll, then the truck stops as if the e-break has been engaged (but it is not engaged). By tapping the accelerator, it will "break free" (with a popping sound and a slight "jerk" in the truck) and then roll fine. This does not always happen ~ guestimate of about 10% of the time. 3) I don't know if this is related, but when I set the drive mode to "normal", it automatically goes to "off road" ~ this happens no matter the driving conditions. This isn't safety related necessarily, however, it may be a part of the total problem. . . . It also decreases my fuel economy. I took the truck to the local GMC dealer/shop. They said the truck had 2 recalls and they took care of those. They believed one of the recalls would help solve the "sticking" when placing in drive or reverse ~ it did not. They also (supposedly) checked the breaking system and took it for a test drive. They said the breaks were fine. I doubt this happened as the soft break pedal and the need to "pump" the breaks to bring them to full pedal is completely obvious. I took the truck home after the inspection and recall. The same issues continued, so I took it back to the shop where it was inspected again. Again, I was told everything was in working order ~ it is not! there are no warning lights that I can find to indicate there is an issue. I'm begining to think that I should have bought a ram truck. . .

24 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 12/10/2024

Greetings. In December 2024, I brought my vehicle in for the rear end lock up recall. The recall reprogrammed the transmission control module. As admitted, by yourself and gm this doesn't fix the problem. In addition, if the lockup occurs and a new valve body is required, gm is on back order with no date for delivery. Also, it is replacing it with the same valve body, I. E. You will have the same problem in the future. Nextgen drivetrain has a valve body for around $1000 that fixes the problem. Https://nextgendiesel. Com/blogs/transmissions-101/general-motors-10-speed-transmission-recall-here-s-how-we-fixed-it . Please read the attached blog from nextgen, they explain in detail, the problems and the fixes. I am scared to death to pull my travel trailer out of state with this looming problem. Please give us a better solution. Thank you.

25 Power Train problem of the 2024 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 12/08/2024

Nothing has happened so far but I believe they have an issue with the allison transmission. When you first start off in the morning driving slow the transmission shifts hard with a thump. I've taken it in to the GMC dealership in ft. Walton beach, florida and they kept the truck overnight and said everything seems to work as it should. I just traded my 2021 GMC 3500hd dually with 130k miles on it and never heard that or ever had an issue so I'm not sure what changed since then? I'm not sure what you guys can do to look into it? thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

26 Power Train problem of the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 11/10/2024

The contact's son owns a 2021 GMC Sierra 3500 commercial vehicle. The contact stated while her son was driving at an undisclosed speed uphill, the vehicle failed to shift to a gear higher than 5th gear. Additionally, the rear wheels locked up, causing the vehicle to come to a stop. The driver attempted to resume driving, but the vehicle failed to exceed 10 mph. The contact was unsure whether a warning light had been illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence of the driver's girlfriend. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 24v797000 (power train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced, but the part was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 133,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

27 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 11/02/2024

I have a complaint about the recall response from both nasal and gm. I feel the cure is substandard. Why not just put new transmission control modules in to correct this problem. Very disappointed.

28 Power Train problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 11/02/2024

We were traveling to our cabin in southern utah when the transmission control solenoid valve stuck in an "on" position. We were unable to accelerate more than 55 miles per hour. We stopped in st. George and went to the chevy dealer for a fix. We were told that they could not get to our vehicle for 2 weeks and the part is on national back order for 6 weeks. Clearly if it is on national back order, this is a major problem in gm trucks. Our truck is still under warranty and chevy would not help. We were 130 miles away from home. It was too expensive to tow, no rental cars were available and plane tickets were too expensive. We "limped" the truck home to las vegas at 55 mph. Speed limits on [xxx] range anywhere from 65 to 80 mph and there are no back roads. Those speeds are deadly when we could only accelerate to 55. 3 times we were almost rear ended by semi trucks because they came up behind us on a curve at 75 mph. This part failure can be deadly. Fortunately, it was daylight and weather was mostly clear. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

29 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 10/24/2024

Contacted general motors to have the recall software patch installed, appoint was set, vehicle was dropped off and now they are telling me there is nothing they can do, that the recall is not available. The software update is available, and is being installed on other vehicles. This is a life safety issue as the rear wheels can lock up at any time which could cause a vehicle accident involving the vehicle under recall as well any vehicles on the road around this vehicle when it happens. General motors should be taking care of this ASAP instead of waiting. I do not feel safe driving the vehicle until they feel like they installing it.

30 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

31 Power Train problem of the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 08/09/2024

While driving 55mph on a 2 lane road, pulling a 5th wheel camper, the truck transmission downshifted by itself to a low gear. This caused a scary and immediate deceleration from 55 to 25mph. The trailer wanted to push into the oncoming lane the deceleration was so fast. The truck is at a dealership and they acknowledge the issue but not a fix other than putting back in the failed part. There was no warning and my readings say many others are having same issue. The small dealership we left the truck with (yemm Chevrolet in galesburg IL) said they had 3 trucks with the same issue. The truck has been with the dealership for 7 weeks now.

32 Power Train problem of the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 07/29/2024

Transmission had to be replaced from the dealership. Hard shifting dealership said truck was 23 days out of warranty. I couldn’t get into the dealership that truck was purchased from for 3 weeks. Had to go to the jeff gordon dealership, which is Chevrolet. And I had to replace the transmission.

33 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 07/15/2024

Driving 65mph on interstate, attempted to change lanes to pass slower vehicle and pressed upon accelerator pedal. . . Truck violently skidded to a stop and sent me onto shoulder, many vehicles behind me swerved to avoid my vehicle. Gm wont repair and says since they cant replicate its not really happening. This has happened twice in last 2 weeks.

34 Power Train problem of the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 07/05/2024

The 6l90 tranmission failed with no warning at 58,408 miles. Had to back the truck up in traffic over 1/2 mile to reach a safe spot. Seems gm is having a lot of problems with this transmission and their 8 speed transmission. No assistance from gm to repair seeing I was out of the 5 year 100000 warranty. Seems gm know about theses problems. Had to spend $5k to get no dealer service to install a remanufactured trans, hoping it will not happen again.

35 Power Train problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 07/01/2024

Driving 65mph when vehicle attempted to downshift itself for no reason when instead the rear axles locked up and made a massively loud bang as if axle fell off, let off gas, smoke pouring from rear tires, skidded about 8 feet, it released then locked up 2 more times within 30 secs before I could get off road out of traffic flow. Mfd has a TSB for this issue(#21-na-275 gm) not sure if its transmission or braking system dealer service could not replicate and told me it was probably my trailer(wasnt traveling with trailer) no warnings, no codes occurred initially at 56000 mile, has happened 10 or 12 times since then. Very scary, im afraid to drive or tow now that dealer mentioned trailer brakes.
