1 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 GMC Sonoma

Failure Date: 03/22/2004

Consumer complained of vehicle handling problems since 5000 miles. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer at least 9-10 times. There was a popping sound in the front end. Consumer had the lower ball joints replaced, and believed the upper ball joints were still bad. Also, there was excessive play in the steering box. This was causing excessive wear on the tires. With any wind the vehicle was blown around. The service writer at the dealership said they didn't want to fix the problem because they were afraid it would make the problem worse, but it was not stated on the service repair sheet. At one point lock tight was put on the bolts to keep them from coming loose. The manifold gasket and thermostat was replaced. On one occasion the vehicle lurched forward, there was a squealing noise coming from the brakes.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 GMC Sonoma

Failure Date: 09/23/2001

Engine accelerates on its own at times while vehicle is in motion. If the clutch is disengaged during the failure, the engine wll run around 3000 rpm for approx. 15 seconds before it returns to normal idle. Dealer claims no codes and engine is operating to specifications. They test drove and could not duplicate the problem. Their statement to me was " we can not fix it if we do not know what to fix". I asked them if they had called GMC to trouble shoot the problem and their reply was yes and they did not know and had no other reports of this problem. I picked the truck up from the dealer on 9/21 and drove it on 9/22 around town with no problem. Then on 9/23 after a 3 stop shopping trip, the truck incured the same problem as before. My dealer has offered to keep the truck for a couple of days of test driving but I am affraid that they will not be able to duplicate the problem since they drove it 60 miles the first time they had it.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1998 GMC Sonoma

Failure Date: 07/03/2000

Transmission is slipping out of gear and drops into neutral for 1-2 seconds, and then goes back into gear, causing a revving in engine. Consumer contacted dealer in July 2000, but could not determine cause. Currently, consumer is having problems with transmission sticking in gear. Same dealer claims transmission needs to be replaced. Consumer states stuck gear resulted in an engine brake condition in a reduced speed zone where vehicle speed is suddenly reduced with no brake lights on, consumer found TSB 99-07-30-005 regarding this problem and stated the recommendation was to replace the valve body assembly, however this was not been done until the valve body assembly failed which caused 3rd gear to lock on the highway, consume rwants gm to take responsibility for this problem.
