1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 01/17/2004

1997 GMC Suburban- multiple engine & transmission failures. At 60,000 miles, vehicle began to shift hard. Returned to shop for diagnosis and repairs several times for work. Finally, while driving the vehicle in city traffic, the transmission failed compeletly. Required valve cover and transmission rebuild @ cost of $2,000. On December 27 '03, had to replace the radiator. On Jan 17 '04, discovered that there was no antifreeze in new radiator. Returned to mechanic who replaced the radiator. Said the intake manifold needed to be replaced. Cost: ~$600. Took to another mechanic for second opinion. Same diagnosis. Both state that gm is aware of both problems, however, they will not cover the costs of repairs or replacement. Additionally- replaced alternator two times; replaced water pump two times; replaced the master cylinder in fall 2003.

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

Nar 04/28/2003. Mr the consumer experienced problems with his vehicle. The vehicle leaked oil, engine idled roughly, coolant system leaked, there was a problem with the dome light, steering, the rear axle, the left rear glass rattled, the air condition, battery, suspension were all inoperative. The fuel filter, mirror transmission seat, seat belts, wipers, alternator, brakes, fuel pump.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 01/09/2000

While driving the serpentine belt tensioner broke from its mounting and resulted in loss of power steering and other components including charging of the battery. The alternator also shorted out. The manufacturer and the dealer were notified. The consumer was told that the warranty not longer covered the belt. The brakes shuttered while braking from 60 mph. The dealer replaced the front brake pads and resurfaced the rotors.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 11/10/1999

Vehicle battery went bad. Dealer replaced battery with new GMC orignal and replaced alternator. New battery failed months later. Positive terminal on battery leaked and destoryed connector. Failed whlie driving car on interstate at 65mph. Total electrical failure was able to pull over. Car statred back up. Failure was on and off and hard to detect. Finally failed for good few days later. Dealer wanted to charge $600 for new cables & battery. Battery destoryed all power cables. Had "coming to jesus" talk with dealer. Wasn't going to pay for damage that was done by their battery that they installed under warranty. Agreed painfully to pay for new battery ($79). Installed interstate battery intead. No problems since.

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 09/04/1998

While driving the Suburban just shuts off without warning, this happens on flat roads as well as hilly roads, the dealer was not able to duplicate the problem, but the entire computer ignition and the alternator were replaced. However, the truck continues to do the same thing.

6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 07/01/1998

1996 GMC Suburban experiences a complete loss of all electrical power upon acceleration. Engine shuts down and will not recrank. At times, will not crank initially. Have replaced battery (twice) and alternator. Dealer says problem is battery.
