The windshield wipers on my 1997 GMC Suburban were not working properly, consistent with NHTSA campaign 03v159000. I contacted GMC, and after a lengthy phone call to collect all relevant data, they set up an appointment for me at my local GMC dealership. The dealership service department inspected the wiper electrical system and informed me that the failure was indeed due to cracked solder joints on the wiper control circuit board. However, my specific VIN number was not included in the recall. If I would have had the problem fixed prior to 70,000 miles on my vehicle, then they would have fixed it at no charge under a "waiver system?", but now it would be $120 to fix. I am the original owner of this vehicle. Although gm continues to send me marketing material to trade in this vehicle for a new one, they failed to inform me at any time of this safety hazard recall. They also wasted several hours of my time on the telephone and arranging to leave my vehicle at the dealer prior to telling me that I was not eligible for the recall. How can this automaker have public safety in mind when they deny consumers a remedy to a potentially catastrophic safety hazard based on the number of miles on their vehicle? this is a $30 retail price circuit board! apparently my safety and that of others around me is not worth $30 to GMC. The "icing on the cake" is the amount of time that gm invested talking about what they were going to do, and then back peddling on why they couldn't replace the card under the recall. What would the cost be if I was caught in a rainstorm driving home from the dealership with my unrepaired vehicle and had a crash? I have personally replaced the defective part with a replacement that I purchased at an automotive supply store.
: the contact stated while driving various speeds on the highway, the engine stalled without warning. After stalling, the vehicle was not easily restarted. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the fuel injector pump needed to be replaced. After the initial replacement, the problem persisted. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the fuel pump needed to be replaced again. The manufacturer was alerted. Updated 12/18/2006 - the injector pump which was replaced under recall failed again. The consumer also wanted to recall fixed, however the dealer refused to honor the recall. Recall numbers 96v057000 and 03v159000. Updated 03/21/07.

I have a 1997 GMC Suburban. The windshield wipers intermittently stop working completely and unpredictably. This happened once or twice since I purchased the vehicle in 2001, but in recent months has happened very frequently, most memorably when I was traveling in heavy rain on the highway. I managed to exit the highway, but was definitely in danger. I contacted GMC and was told that although there is a recall for windshield wiper failure on 1997 GMC Suburbans (gm recall #03023; NHTSA recall no. 03v159), my vehicle is not included based on the VIN. I have scheduled the vehicle for repair, but feel strongly that it should be included under the recall.
When windshield wipers are activated and the engine running, they will not turn off unless the ignition is turned off. Dealer advises me this is not related to NHTSA recall 03v159000.
While driving a 1997 GMC Suburban at night in the rain the windshield wipers stopped working without notice. It resulted in a very urgent and panicy stop on i96 from highway speed in relatively light traffic. We waited a few minutes by the side of the road and they restarted on their own. I called the corporation customer service and got nowhere. I wrote a letter thinking it would get action (Dec 1, 2003). I got a response that basically said that this vehicle had already been recalled for the problem and that there was nothing that they could do. This is all news because we purchased this truck in July of 2003. The service manager, elizabeth navarro, suggested I go back to the dealer for additional evaluation. The dealership said they could not evaluate if the system is functioning. So the first time it failed near the dealer was yesterday,7/27/04. The dealer determined that there was an aftermarket module (the component that everyone agrees is failing) on the vehicle and that they could do nothing. Here is my concern, I am somewhat mechanically inclined and understand that I own a vehicle that has now failed at least two modules, possibly three, and it is at most eight years old with 80,000 miles on it. In talking with other vehicle owners of similar age and brand I am told this is common. Everone at gm and the dealers talk about a component failure. They actually have a system failure. The design is failing. Namely their recall fix needs to be recalled. My obvious question to you is what type of follow up do you do after a recall has been executed? do you perform any statistical analysis to determine effectiveness? may I have copies of those studies? believe windshield wipers are a mandatory component. I believe if my wife were driving that night (or my mother) the probability the the truck coming to a safe stop would have been much less.
Intermittently windshield wipers become inoperable, obstructing the driver's view. Dealer stated there is not recall on this vehicle. A recall has been issued on similar makes and models, however this vehicle is not included due to the VIN#. Please provide further information.

Windshield wiper failure. Windshield wipers use to work at different times, but just this past June, they stopped and would not work at all. Concerning a safety recall #98v150001. The windshield wipers work periodically. (not when consumer needs them) consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the recall didn't pertain to this vehicle.
Windshield wipers work intermittently. When they do not work, the wipers and the windshield fluid motor don't work at all. There is a recall for this exact same problem for Suburban 1994-1997. Normally they will work when you first start the car, but then go out after about 10 minutes, and fail to work the rest of the day.
Windshield wipers not working properly, windshield wipers will intermittently shut off. Contacted dealer and dealer stated that this vehicle was not part of recall due to VIN.
Nhtsa recall# 98 v 150 001/ manufacturers recall 98043 concerning windsheild wiper wiring, windshield wipers worked intermittently. Dealer / manufacturer were notified, and both informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under recall due to VIN.
Repair is not covered under mfg campaign #98043. Vehicle mfg date is 7/96.
When we first test drove this vehicle we noticed that the brakes were "grabbing" very abnormally and we commented that the brakes had a bad problem to the salesman that was with us, also we had noticed that the windshield wiper did not work properly on the passenger's side. We were told that the brakes would be fixed and that the windshield wiper would be fixed. The dealer said that they had turned the rotors on both front and back brakes and had repaired the wiper. After we had purchased the vehicle the brakes were better but they were not fixed. When you would apply the brakes at any time it would shimmy, buck and jump. If you had to make a sudden stop it would jump many times before it would come to a complete stop. I don't mean that the foot pedal would jump, I mean that the vehicle itself would shimmy and jump. I have taken this vehicle to another GMC dealer - gwatney GMC- to have them work on the brakes and they at first thought that the rotors needed turning again. After they turned them the vehicle still responded in the same manner. They now say that the anti-lock sensor is bad on the right side, (a $500. 00 component). I don't understand why the anti-lock brake indicator on the dash never gave me a warning that something was wrong. I would like to know if you have had any reports similar to this problem for the GMC braking system, malfunctioning of indicators on the dashboard or if there is a recall for this make and model for any of these problems. My daughter-in-law has told me that she thought that there is a recall for the anti-lock brakes on GMC light trucks for the years 1993 thru 1997. I know someone in a 1996 GMC jimmy that was in a serious accident where her airbags did not deploy and her brakes did not function properly in this accident. It's a miracle that she was able to keep her leg which was mangled, broken in several places and cut up from this accident. The windshield wipers work about 96% of the time.
Intermittently windshield wipers quit working in the middle of operation, and sometimes the windshield wipers will not come on at all. The problem was reported to the dealership. The problem has not been corrected. Please provide any further details.
I have taken my vehicle to anaheim hills GMC under factory warranty and told them about my wipers working intermitently or not working at all. The wipers only failed to operate once for me at this time. The dealership said that the wipers were working fine that day they tested and theres nothing they can do, especially since my VIN wasn't listed on the recall. It's been almost a year now and the problem has increased in severity and frequency. I can't see out of my windshield many times and have to pull over to clean it manually. Sometimes the wipers don't stop working even in the off position so my wiper blades are getting tore up on a dry windshield. The washer feature only works 10% of the time. I am having the exact same problem that the campaign recall covers. I am told by GMC customer service that they can't do anything because of the recall not including my VIN #. Bologna, NHTSA has better sources of tracking this and they say that approx. 1,557,583 vehicles are affected. GMC tells me about 100,000 VIN's are affected. These #'s aren't even remotely close. This is a major safety issue and should be addressed immediately. Injuries or deaths are possible from poor vision in a rain or snow condition. Let's not have another firestone situation on our hands. GMC must step up to claim responsibility and take care of the consumer in this safety issue.
When driving while it is snowing or sleeting, the right side windshield wiper moves snow and ice to the center of the windshield. The end of the left side wiper then pushes the snow/ice down the windshield where it piles up in the center. As this process continues, the pile gets larger and lifts the left (driver side) wiper from the windshield, allowing more and more snow/ice to accumulate under it, blocking the driver's vision. The only way to resolve is to stop the vehicle and manually remove the piled up ice/snow from the windshield.

Winshield wiper failed, causing poor visibility.
Windshield wipers function intermittently. Wipers work for several minutes and then stop for varying periods of time. Some days they don't work at all. Local dealer was unaware of any recalls regarding the wipers. GMC home office stated that my vehicle was not covered under campaign id number 98v150000, since my vehicle was assembled at a different plant than the affected vehicles in the recall notice. The wipers don't work reliably enough to travel in inclement weather. Sudden rainstorms can cause loss of forward visibility for extended periods of time. Major accidents have been averted so far, but it is a major concern for my family's safety. Thanks.
Locks for various doors have stuck four times, preventing entry or exit from vehicle. Dealership has examined vehicle, and performed repair work. Consumer was also having problems with the windshield wipers which failed intermittently, consumer was informed that there was a recall however it did not apply to consumers vehicle due to the VIN.
The windshield wipers experienced the same defect as stated in recall 03 v 159 000. Ph.
Consumer states windshield wipers work intermittently during use. Dealer has been contacted.
Vehicle's windshield wipers only work on high speed. The mechanic replaced wiper module assembly.
