Twice had to have wiring repaired because animals ate the wiring. Both were caused by gm using soy based insulation on wiring that made it a delicacy to the animals and caused them to eat through two wiring harnesses, one of which gm no longer makes. The other complaint is the timing belt has stretched and is now in need of replacement at a cost of $4500 to $5000.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2022

The contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a reduction in engine power with the check engine and traction control warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle intermittently failed to start, the passenger's side rear tire made knocking sounds and lifted up while making turns, and the vehicle consumed an excessive amount of oil, causing the contact to refill the oil reservoir every three days. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000. The VIN was unavailable.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2022

My 2010 Terrain had been been intermittent dash warnings for “service stabilitrac” and “engine power reduced” which would force the engine to reduce the speed itself down to about 30 mph. After turning off car and restarting, warnings would go away. Yesterday, while driving on a secondary road, with no check engine light on, the engine stalled while traveling at approx 35 mph. I was able to drop the vehicle into neutral and coast onto a side street, while also attempting to restart the engine. I was able to pull over without causing an accident. After letting the car sit for a few minutes I attempted to restart the engine, but only got a strange noise from the area of the upper cylinders. At his point the check engine light was now on. While waiting for a tow truck, and independent mechanic pulled up to ask if I needed help. After listening to the noice from the upper engine he asked if he could get tools and look in the engine. I said yes. He quickly pulled parts off the upper engine and opened and removed the upper cylinder cover. This revealed that the timing chain had no tension, as well as shards of shattered plastic all over the place, in and around the upper cylinders. After pointing this out he put everything back together and suggested I contact the dealership I got the vehicle from, which I have done already. He then stated that it appears that the engine would need to be replaced or rebuilt, due to catastrophic engine failure. He said my quick thinking of putting the vehicle into neutral probably avoided causing an accident and allowed me to get myself to a safe spot before stopping the vehicle. He also stated that this particular gm motor is known for catastrophic failure, which gm has failed or refused to acknowledge.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2021

I bought my 2010 GMC Terrain sle at 160,000. It had a rough start up but the dealer said it was because it was an older car and been sitting for a while. The rough start up never stopped even after replacing the catalytic converter because of code p0420. The mechanic informed of this specific vehicle oil composition so I was consistently checking the oil. A month after the new catalytic converter was installed. I stalled out on the interstate with traffic going 65 mph minimum, the wheel locked and I was almost rear ended. I take the vehicle to an automotive shop and I need a new timing chain with numerous new codes. P0325 p0326 p0327 p0016 p0017 p0014.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2020

The contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. The contact stated the vehicle would not exceed 15 mph and was consuming a significant amount of engine oil. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the rings needed to be replaced. The contact stated the vehicle was not repaired; however, the engine oil was refilled. The contact stated that the failure persisted, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who replaced the rings, the catalytic converter, and the actuator under an unknown recall. The contact stated after the recall repair, the vehicle would inadvertently make abnormal sounds and shudder while driving. The check engine warning light and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the piston was rubbing against the motor and the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2020

The wiper blades just stopped working. No wipers at all. Wipers just stopped working while driving. As for engine while driving down interstate the car suddenly says switching to low power mode and the car starts going slower- scary when going 70 mph and then slowed down without you doing it yourself.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2018

While driving my car the stabili-track service light comes on. Then the check engine, brake, abs, awd, as well as the power steering lights come on. Then I lose power steering and my speed is throttled down a lot. Its happened on the expressway and city streets. When on the expressway I have to immediately get to the shoulder without getting into an accident. I've had my car towed to the mechanics shop multiple times and they've told me that there are no codes when hooking up the computer. They kept it a few times in the last 3 years and have told me there were misfires after letting the car sit and testing it out (test driving) and work was needed (throttle body replacement, spark plug replacement, cam shaft swap out and a full tune-up). $1000 and less than a year later it happens again and then again. This is the 3rd year (2016, 2017, 2018) it has happened to me in a row and all the mechanic can say is that it may be something gm should investigate. I've called gm with no luck. This is extremely unsafe and I am thankful that my kids were not in the car when it happens. Trying to navigate traffic on the expressway when your car throttles down to 25-35 mph is insane.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2018

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2018

Had one catalytic converter replaced a few weeks ago now need the 2nd one replaced. Gm has a special coverage notice for 2010-2011 catalytic converters on the 2. 4 liter engine but not the 3. 0. My 3. 0 has the same issue and gm should include covering this under special coverage. . . . . I phoned to voice the issue and they gave me a case number should there be inclusion for the 3. 0 in the future. Had a few cars over the years and never had to replace one catalytic converter, two on a car that does not have alot of mileage and not included in the special coverage for the 2. 4 engine does not seem right.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2017

Car lost power in the middle of traffic moving at 60 mph on a busy highway. Had to be towed to a dealer, where they said the timing chain had broken and the engine was destroyed as a result. Then we find out that broken timing chains and broken balance chains are common problems on 2010/2011 Terrains. Yet gm has never been forced to acknowledge the problem or issue a recall for this serious safety issue. (timing chain breakage in any engine should be rare, not a common occurrence!).

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2017

"takata recall" so far at 140,000 miles on my 2010 Terrain I have had to put a new engine in, all 3 catalytic converters and now a power steering pump and rack. I could have bought a brand new car by now. No recalls on any of these??? there should be. The engine just stopped on the highway and once replaced then the steering became tight and barely made it to the shop.

I looked up the code. Sat for a moment and restarted. It went without incident for a couple of days. Had it checked out says it's the throttle body was needed. Is there a recall?.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2016

Had to replace engine which cost over $4300 and I think it was due to some recall parts (timing chain and Cadillac converter) I should not have had to pay for a new engine because this company had some faulty parts. I would like to be reimbursed for this.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2016

Catalytic converter will have to be repaired. Failed emmisions testing. By the time I fix this along with the other major parts I know it's 6 years later but this should not be happening. Please strongly consider a recall on this! there are unusual and major issues with the 2010 GMC Terrain please check the internet or pull files of all issue where GMC states nothing was detected. This is an easy way for GMC to get out of recalls. Maybe we need to go to the news and papers.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2016

Catalytic converter going out on a car 6 years old. I know some GMC have had recalls on their catalytic converter, why not the Terrain. I have had so many things fixed on this car. The car started running really rough and hard. The first things caused the car to shut down in power. That was covered under warranty and was fix. Then the air bag light kept coming on, and I had repaired. Then a recall was on that, and I was reimburse my money. Then I had the evap vent solenoid asm and cleared. Still more problems so took it back to the dealership. More money spent as now they said "tested evap system and found gas cap leaking. " repaired that then more money was needed as they said after the light came on again evap purge solenoid leaking pressure. Then the compressor went out. I live in texas so air was needed. Well now the services engine like is on again, and the car idle real hard and jerks like it wants to die. After checking the engine light I was told now it's my catalytic converter, and its going to cost me $1200. After researching I have found other are having the same problem with the 2010 GMC Terrain. These cars and year model appear to be junk. Will there be a recall on this problem? could you are investigate this?.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2016

Timing chain failed at 77,000 miles effecting the catalytic converter.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2015

Takata recall - bought vehicle used,in past 2 years have gone to start truck an it stutters when trying to turn ignition over. All lights on dash flash and upon starting a 2nd time engine light comes on. I work in auto collision industry and read with my scan tool. Every time its listed as faulty start. Didn't think any major wrong, till I rear ended someone at about 35 direct hit. I hit my chest hard on steering wheel & have wanted to get rid of truck since. I knew the bags should've deployed an felt unsafe since they did not. No recall listed, but then I saw cobalt major recall and it seems identical to my vehicles issue. Contacted GMC to fix,not covered. But since we do so much business and it seems connected they will be repairing tomorrow however cobalts recall requires. Unfortunately others might not be so lucky as I.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2015

The car has been to the dealership 4 times for this problem only to have the dealership fix everything but the timing chain now we are not in "warranty" whatever that crap means. So we are responsible for 1400. 00 bill on a timing chain for a car that has 77000 miles on it. We have a 2003 with 200000 miles on it and never had to repair all this engine stuff. I think gm is the worst car maker in the world. I am never buying another gm product.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

Sitting in car with key in cup holder and the engine tried to crank up all my itself. Car taken to dealership after the 3 rd time happening, dealership claims they can not find an issue with the car. Today car has done the same nhing three times already.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2015

I was driving down the middle of the road with people behind me, and the car just completely stopped in the middle of the road. The light came on that said stabilitrack. It would not start back up. We had it towed to a dealership, and we contacted GMC, they said our warranty had ran out in December 2014, and this took place February 2015. The vehicle had around 60,000 miles on it. It turned out it was the timing chain, and when it broke it destroyed the whole motor. It actually sheared off some other metal parts. The whole engine had to be replaced, and we had to pay for it all out of our pocket, while we are still paying for the vehicle itself. I feel like that is a problem with the vehicle itself, because you read on these pages and forums, and tons of people have had the same problem as we had. We could have been killed by it stopping right in the middle of the road with no warning at all!!.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

Driving on highway, 65 mph. Without warning the cars display said service stabilitrak and engine power reduced and immediately lost power. Cars coming up behind me fast, had to pull over, no power. Almost wrecked / died. Dealer says can't recreate issue and cleared codes. I'm afraid it will happen again.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

On 10/17/2013 my wife experienced a sudden acceleration while pulling into a parking space at our local walgreen's pharmacy. As she was pulling into a parking space in front of the pharmacy the car kept moving forward slowly although she was pressing on the brake pedal as hard as she could. The car crawled up the concrete curb stop slowly and hit the steel pipe bollard placed in front of the curb stop to protect the walkway front of the store. No injuries occurred to my wife, no one was on the walkway at the time. Only damage was to the bollard (bent over) plastic bumper, grill and right front fender of the car. Bollard and a trash receptacle brought the car to a stop. This is the second time this occurred. The first occasion was about a year ago when I was driving on a neighborhood residential street approaching a stop sign. As the car was slowing down and I was pressing on the brake pedal the car kept moving forward with the brakes being fully applied. Could hear the engine straining at an increased rpm. I lifted my foot off the brake pedal and jammed it down hard again and the car came to a stop at the stop sign with the engine in normal idle. In the three years we have owned this car these are the only occasions the problem has occurred.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2013

Camshaft position sensor error occurred. GMC has issued a recall for model year 2011 Terrains, but not 2010. Same issue is affecting that model year as well. (voluntary recall 11195 & 11195a).

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2012

Noticed a hissing noise. Thought was in cabin air filter, so we replaced (it was dirty). Hissing noise continued. Then hissing noise grew worse, no cold air from a/c. Brought to the dealer & the compressor was replaced due to a hole in compressor. 22675 miles, 2 yrs 2 mos in service.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2011

The contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently to 30 mph. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer eleven times in relation to the problem. The fuel injector and timing chain were both replaced twice. In addition, the engine consumed a large amount of oil within a short period of time. The technician recommended the engine be replaced. The vehicle was currently at the dealer for repair. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

I own a 2010 GMC Terrain 4 cyl. I have had several different service problems with my vehicle since June 2010. Although the service department at my dealership has been cooperative and understanding through all the service jobs performed on the vehicle, it has become disheartening and frustrating that my vehicle continues to give me problems with electrical, engine won't start up, static from radio, not able to play iphone through usb connection at times, random warning lights coming on and off on display console. I have been given several reasons of "could be" or "maybe" but never an actual concrete reason for all the numerous problems. The computer system apparently gives false readings on occassion to service department at the dealership about error codes and messages or no error messages will come up, even though there might be issues with the vehicle. My concern is with all the electronic issues, engine issue of not starting up, computer messages or lack of messages to the vehicle when there is an issue. . If I am driving the vehicle and don't know there is a problem because the computer system within the vehicle does not accurate report correct data about the status of the vehicle, then how do I know when to get the vehicle to get serviced before I am stranded with my children or worse yet, get into a car accident because of the vehicle's compter malfunction. My dealership in my hometown can only do so much with information provided by the manufacturer; so if they don't know what type of fixes to make, then my vehicle is not updated with necessary fixes when appropriate.
