1 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2020

While driving on the freeway at 75 mph I felt significant reduction in speed and the rpms went pretty high. It felt as if I had my foot on the accelerator and the brake at the same time. There was also a burnt smell. After a few minutes it went back to normal. This continued to happen sporadically so I took it to my mechanic he inspected the vehicle could not find an issue he also ran a code scan. No codes pertaining to this issue only knocker sensor and O2 sensor. I replaced those anyway. Then a few days later I was driving to work at it happened again going about 55 mph it felt like the transmission had downshift to a very low gear there was smoke and really bad burning smell. I pulled over immediately and called my mechanic. He towed the vehicle to his shop still could not find a problem. After several months of sitting I had to drive the vehicle home. After approximately 5 miles there was smoke and small flames coming from behind the front drivers side wheel. My mechanic checked the brake, it had engaged without me pressing the pedal and stuck. Now we are having issues getting brake fluid to the rear brakes. Possibly the proportioning valve.

2 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

Driving vehicle at 30 mph. Lost all power and engine. No brakes, no power steering, no dash lights, engine quit running, no exterior lights. Parked vehicle in parking lot. No power at all. After about 20 minutes of waiting vehicle started again and had minimal acceleration/power.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2015

Vehicle started fine, then as I was driving in neighborhood engine shut off and I lost all power, could not turn car without steering and crashed into curb up the street, car would not start, had aaa come tow to our home. Had a new battery, and would only take a charge when bypassing battery directly into engine. Now something is draining battery and if I don't start and run every two days , battery dead. Electrical cluster also going bad and instruments not working, air conditioning electrical problem , will blow cold out of all but two vents, where it blows 90 degrees. Back window wiper stopped working, all electrical related. Dealer said no error codes test drove for a week to get to reproduce stall driving, returned to me saying can't diagnose. So frustrating and dangerous.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2012

This has occurred several times since the initial occurrance. At various speeds (5-55 mph) the steering goes out and you cannot move the steering wheel. Our vehicle has been in the shop multiple times over the years to correct this. The mechanics cannot find anything wrong, and since this is not a continous problem, they are unable to experience it. It's a frightening experience when you are on the beltway and need to take an exit, or follow the beltway bearing right or left and you have no control of your steering. More frightening is when you have your children in the vehicle. I've had one minor incident/accident while backing up to park my truck at a campground. I did not have my foot on the gas and was drifting. There was a tree behind me, which I needed to park next to, and the steering went out and my left bumper edge caught the tree, which pushed the bumper in slightly. This caused the rubber track on the top of the bumper to pop up and it cannot be reattached. Additionally there are nasty scratches on the bumper's edge.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

Since 40-45k miles my GMC Yukon 1500 xl has had a terrible slack in the steering. As I'm driving on the highway, gust of wind shifts the vehicle half a lane to the other side. There's been times I almost hit the car in the other lane. Everytime I took the car in for a check, the dealership was less than motivated to even check the problem.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2007

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Yukon. Approximately six months ago, the fuel gauge began to display inaccurate fuel readings. Beginning in November of 2007, the speedometer began malfunctioning and remains at 120 mph, even when the vehicle is not on. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer on four separate occasions for the steering wheel to be greased because it makes a popping noise every six months. The vehicle has not been taken to the dealer concerning the fuel gauge or the speedometer at this time. There is an extended warranty on the fuel gauge and speedometer, which has been extended to 70,000 miles. The VIN, engine size, and purchase date were unknown. The current mileage was 123,000 and failure mileage was 118,000.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2004

This vehicle just quits running by itself at highway speeds and then you cannot control the brakes, steering or engine. I reported this to odi in March of 2006 confirmation #10153178. I have had the vehicle in to GMC dealers to repair this issue many times and each time I was told there was no recall and that they could not duplicate my problem. I saw on the news recently that other GMC products have this issue and have caused deaths, but my vehicle was not listed in the recall. I want to know why not? I am lucky I did not go over a cliff on wolf creek pass the first time this happened and kill myself. The problem that I am having with this vehicle is exactly the same issue that is on the news now with the other GMC models. This vehicle should have been included in the recall and was not. Someone needs to correct this. I also wrote GMC on oct 11, 2005 and also called them multiple times but to no avail. I finally gave up because no one would listen to me. Well I hope someone listens now before more people are killed because GMC did not include the 2004 Yukon in this recall.
