The contact owns a 2008 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that the wheel has corroded which causes the tires to leak air. The contact stated tire pressure warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed at a local mechanic with needing the wheel replaced but was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
My bridgestone dueler h/l alenza tires are extremely dry rotted. So bad that the sidewall cracked bad enough to leak air. Tires still have lots of tread left.
I purchased a new 2008 GMC Yukon denali in January of 2008 . This car has 60000 miles on it and has never been in a accident . I have replaced all 4 tires on the truck due to a constant lose of air in the tires to find out after replacing the tires that the lose of air is due to the air leaking thru the rims . I understand that you are going to have wear and tear on a vehicle but in all of my 30 years of driving I have never heard of the rims going bad on a car. As I see it the rims are like the foundation of a house and should last the life of the truck . You should not have to replace such an item ,also after looking on line and contacting the dealer it has been brought to my attention that this is a common problem with several gm trucks made between 2006-2010. Also as a result of the air leaking out as the truck was being driven by my wife she made a turn and as she was turning the tire gave out due to a lose in pressure.
Potential safety concern over tires losing air pressure due to leaks caused at tire/wheel interface. Root cause is that chrome plating on aluminum wheels are peeling, resulting in corrosion of the aluminum substrate causing inability to achieve proper sealing between the tire and the rim. It is known in the industry that chrome plating on aluminum has a limited life expectancy (approximately 2 years) before peeling of the chrome occurs. More robust coating methods are available, such as physical vapor deposition (pvd).
The contact is a mechanic who was performing work on a 2008 GMC Yukon denali. The contact noticed the chrome on all four wheels were deteriorating and leaving a powdery residue substance. The consumer noticed the chrome was peeling off the rims from the inside due to deterioration of the alloy of the rim. Updated 05/10/11.
