1 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2017

Transmission was recalled (NHTSA reference #04v176000) in 2004 for over heating problem. There was no follow up to see if repairs specified in the recall were effective over the expected life of the transmission. Symptoms started about two weeks ago. Transmission pauses before going into gear. Then transmission slips and engine revs. After one week, transmission quit pulling as I was attempting to enter the interstate. Car would not get up to speed and transmission quit pulling entirely, leaving me stranded on side of interstate. Transmission fluid black and burnt. Sounds like gear jumping teeth.

2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2016

Transmission recall automatic transmission slips/and jerks through gears.

3 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2014

The transmission slips into 1st gear has a burnt rubber smell in fluid. I had recall complete and still have problem!.

4 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

Transmission was slipping. Then suddenly car felt like someone slammed on the brakes. Took car to dealership and was told transmission was failing. The transmissions on these cars were recalled in 2004 when an oil jet kit was installed per the recall to provide extra lubrication to the transmission. Talked to Honda and they refuse to provide any help with these multiple transmission failures. Cost to fix this is 4100. 00 at the dealership.

5 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

Driving 60 on a busy interstate the transmission drops gear making my car jerk hard and slow almost enough for the person behind me to slam into me. Pulled over and turned car of then back on transmission seems to be slipping bad. Bought it used 2 years ago it has 93,000 miles and never misses servicing. I see it is not uncommon, why is this issue not being taken care of?.

6 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2013

While driving on a busy CA freeway going 70mph in the fast lane, suddenly the car started (I thought) braking very violently. I crossed the lanes to get to the shoulder all the while it was still braking violently. Narrowly missed being rear ended several times. We had it towed to our Honda mechanic and it turns out the transmission was slipping from 4th to 2nd gear. I have subsequently read numerous stories exactly like mine. Looks like Honda knows of the problem and is waiting for someone to be killed or seriously injured before they do anything about it. Yes, the car is 10 years old but this is a serious safety issue and they need to acknowledge and try to help their loyal customers before they are killed or injured.

7 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2013

I was preparing to exit a parking area when the engine rpms jumped up to 4000+ but the car did not accelerate. The transmission was in d but the car would not move. I allowed the rpms to drop to 600, shifted to n then back to d. Repeated that process a 2nd time and the transmission did engage. The next day the local Honda dealer checked but could not verify a transmission problem. At 61740 miles the same transmission slipping occurred in traffic. The transmission is now being replaced. We purchased the car in November 2002. This vehicle had an easy life and less than 62000 miles. The 2004 recall for Accord v6 automatic transmission 2nd gear did not fix the problem.

8 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Transmission failed. The gears are slipping, and it lags and jerks when it does shift.

9 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2013

Transmission slipped when shifting from third to fourth when accelerating to get on the freeway. Luckily no one was injured but the car behind me almost rear ended me when I lost all power.

10 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

Transmission fail. When warm transmission won't stay in gear and slips. D rebuilt had to have it towed to a shop and rebuilt.

11 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 25 mph, the transmission began to slip gears and then failed to respond. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. The vehicle was able to resume in operation after waiting for one hour. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who advised the contact that the transmission would need to be replaced due to internal damage. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 99,892.

12 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2012

The transmission started slipping and the transmission/transmission fluid started overheating and boiling. The car started smoking and we had to pull over. When towed to a mechanic they said the transmission was bad and was slipping.

13 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2012

Only 125k miles on the car. I noticed the transmission slipping when going into/out of second gear. I took it for a drive later to see if I could replicate the problem and could not. Two days later, while getting off of the interstate and turning onto the surface streets, the transmission suddenly start jolting and downshifting even though I was pressing on the gas. It continued to do so all the way to the dealer. I could not get it to go past second gear. Was told that I need a new transmission at a cost of $4,000. Have since seen that this make and model is having all kinds of problems. There are websites addressing the problems and apparently a facebook page. I also learned after the fact that there had been a recall in 2004 related to the second gear but they patched it with some cheesy kit and apparently prayed that the s -t would hit the fan after everyone's warranty expired -- which it has. The NHTSA needs to recall these vehicles and require Honda to make good on them.

14 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2012

Transmission is slipping between 1st and 2nd gears and after car is warm transmission hesitates from dead start. I have looked online only to find out that there are hundreds of complaints and this is definitely a safety concern, the NHTSA is failing it seems in their responsibility to address this recurring malfunction, I only hope that the death as a result of this situation that finally causes a recall is not one of my family members.

15 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2012

2003 Honda Accord. First transmission began to slip at 50,000 miles. Took to dealer for evaluation and was told nothing was wrong. About a week later, driving on west side highway going from brooklyn to home in NJ. Transmission failed and finally got it into first gear. Brought to dealer and transmission replaced at 50,000 miles. It was still under warranty at this time and did not have to pay anything. At 108,000 miles again I felt the transmission start to slip. Again, brought to mahwah Honda and told that there was nothing wrong. One week later, driving on major highway in NJ (route 17 south) the transmission failed. Luckily, at cars going 60 mph around me I was able to coast into a parking lot and not get rear ended or in an accident. Car was flat bed trucked to dealer. When we discussed the issues we knew that Honda 2003 Accords/transmissions were having, they ignored the comments. This was now the third transmission for the car, the original, the replacement at 50,000 miles and the event that just occurred. They did not want to hear anything of it. In the end, the "deal" they gave was to pay close to $3000 for the transmission (they gave a 20% discount, how kind). The service was awful. As a life long Honda customer with at least 25 years of Honda cars, I will never go back. What a shame that Honda will not live up to their prior great reputation and back up the cars and obvious defect that could have killed me driving. Shame on Honda.

16 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

This complaint is for a 2003 Honda Accord sedan, v6 engine with automatic transmission. When passing a car on a two lane road, in the middle of the pass the transmission started to slip as if it had slipped into neutral and the rpms shot up to redline and I could no longer accelerate. I was fortunate to have space to back off and narrowly avoided a head-on collision. The car was undriveable requiring towing. End result was that the transmission had to be rebuilt due to failed or defective parts. This is a serious failure which could have caused injury or death and I believe warrants a safety investigation. I have since read of numerous failures just like mine. My failure was not for lack of maintenance.

17 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

Transmission slipped in center right lane of four lane traffic on I-80 just south of chicago. After it slipped, it down shifted causing the vehicle to decelerate suddenly. I was almost rear ended by a tractor trailer. The transmission was running fine until 5 days later when my wife was driving with my daughter. The transmission slipped as she accelerated onto I-265 in clark county indiana. It then quit completely stranding her on the side of the road in heavy evening traffic moving at a high rate of speed. This is a dangerous failure and is happening too often.

18 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

Transmission began to slip between 2nd and 3rd gear. This is similar to many other complaints on this make and year vehicle. Honda should be ashamed of making such garbage and not stepping up to the plate and fix it at no cost to the consumer. I will never buy another Honda vehicle ever again. I urge others to take the same stance so Honda learns their lesson.

19 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. While the contact was driving approximately 30 mph the transmission slipped into neutral gear without intent and began to lock which resulted in no power during acceleration. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and resumed normally after shifting into drive. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where a recall repair was performed for NHTSA recall campaign id number 04v176000 (power train: automatic transmission). The failure persisted after the remedy repair and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 111,000. Rvk.

20 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2011

I was driving approximately 35 mph when I went to accelerate, the transmission slips and engine revs high while car downshifts into what felt like first gear and violently slows down. This almost put me through the windshield. Any attempts I made to speed up or maintain speed just cause the transmission to slip and lag until finally the car just acts like its in neutral. I turn off the car off and start it up again, it drives fine all the way to the dealership. They find nothing wrong with it and charge the $100 diagnostic fee. I drive it off the lot and it immediately starts slipping between 2-3 gears and downshifting; so I drive it right back into the shop and they say the transmission needs replaced. Transmission replacement run roughly $5000. Car is at 85,000 miles, all maintenances and 3000-mile oil changes performed, car has required many visits to the shop for malfunctioning electrical systems and problematic brakes. Honda claims all recalls have been performed, including a recall for a defective transmission part they never replaced with a working part. The technician informs me I am able to drive home granted I can deal with some slippage of gears, if this had happened on the highway, I would be dead right now, and I do a lot of highway driving. Nothing has been done yet to correct this failure, I believe Honda should do the right thing and replace these dangerously faulty parts in all of its vehicles.

21 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2011

The transmission was slipping, and did not allow me to accelerate in an intersection. Near collision by 2 cars caused an incredibly unsafe and hazardous situation.

22 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2011

I own a 2003 Honda Accord, ex v6 4 door sedan. I was driving on the bqe expressway in brooklyn yesterday when the transmission started slipping and lurched. It almost cause a rear end accident, and I had my 16 moth old baby in the back seat. The car then wouldn't go into a drive gear, nor would go into reverse. I restarted the car and the car limped the 1 mile home - but transmission was still slipping. This is an extremely dangerous condition. Websites listing identical failures are full and plentiful. When does someone have to die to get this remedied?.

23 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2011

The 2003 Honda Accord ex v6 automatic transmission slips out of grear to neutral and then jerks the car and goes back into gear. This happens periodically without warning. The car has 97,258 miles. The Honda dealer said the transmission needs to be replaced at a cost of $4075. 22 + taxes and alignment.

24 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2011

Transmission slips. While driving, the transmission will suddenly drop from 4 gear to 3 gear or 1 gear without warning - causing sudden deceleration. Note that since it is the transmission and not the brakes, there is no indication to other drivers that you are decelerating. The other issue is, while attempting to accelerate the tramission will not shift but will rev the engine up to red-line without accelerating. This is where I was almost rear-ended by onther vehicle while attempting accelerate on to the freeway and the car would not downshift - but red-lined and wouldn't accel. I've noticed that this seems to be a common problem with 2003 Honda Accords given the number of complaints filed about this same issue so I am somewhat surprised that Honda does not acknowledge these transmissions to be defective and agree to help the consumer fix them. Honda America denied my request to fix this issue.

25 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2011

Transmission on 2003 Accord has began to fail. Transmission slips and often violently slams into gear when down shifting or placing vehicle in reverse. The problem is fairly consistent each time the vehicle is driven. Nothing has been done to correct the problem, and Honda has now twice claimed that "they can't duplicate the problem. " research has shown that this problem is endemic to the 2003 Accord, and the ultimate (and inevitable) failure of the transmission presents a safety concern. Users have reported the vehicle violently quitting at freeway speeds, narrowly avoiding rear-end collisions, etc.

26 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the automatic transmission was slipping and would fail to engage into gear when driving 5 mph and up. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who rebuilt the transmission but the failure was not corrected and persisted. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted in regards to the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000.

27 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

We were traveling, approx 2 hr dr. Noticed very little revving up but would kick into gear, maybe an hour into the drive, transmission started slipping causing a hard stop and go motion. Had to manually shift vehicle until the vehicle would not shift anymore. Engine revved up to 6 & 7 and would slow down then speed up on its own. Vehicle would not shift and would not reverse. Let the car rest for about an hour and it would be fine for about 5 mins then start up again. Had to tow the vehicle to the dealer where they said the recall was fixed and I may have to purchase new transmission.

28 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2010

Honda Accord 03 transmission failure, I just recently bought an 03 with 97k miles and after about 3k miles (1 month) the gears started slipping. I was visiting family 3 hours away from my home when the car wouldn't go into 2nd gear, or 3rd. This is very frustrating. I was lucky not to have been hit by other vehicles on the highway.

29 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2010

Transmission begin slipping between 2nd and 3rd under hard acceleration, as is typical for this year Accord, indicating eminent tranny failure. Took the car to Honda dealership and asked for a goodwill repair after hearing the cost of transmission replacement ($3700). Honda offered to cover 75% of the cost, which I accepted.

30 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2010

2003 Honda Accord ex-v6 - power transmission failure at 112,000. While driving to church the car showed signs of weakened power and it appeared the transmission was slipping. This was especially noticeable on hills. The following day after dropping my children off at school, I took the vehicle to an authorized Honda repair center, where the manager confirmed that the transmission was slipping. The repair center quoted $4,400 for a Honda authorized remanufactured transmission. I called Honda America customer service for support with what appears to be a trend in 2003 Accord transmission failure. Customer support declined to help stating the vehicle was over 100,000 miles. The Honda repair center was able to adjust the final price to $3,300. I am presently 7 months pregnant and also have two children ages eight and six who I transport to school daily. I purchased the Honda because they have traditionally stood behind their brand and produced a high-quality product. However, as a mother, I do not feel safe driving this car -nor do I accept Hondas lack of involvement to properly resolve. We plan to properly repair and immediately sell as I do not want to jeopardize the safety of my family with this vehicle and its demonstrated inferior quality and reliability.

31 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

In larger city after many red lights, the warm transmission began slipping when the light turned green. This has continued to happen. The problem now is intermittent but I think can become quite serious. I received no sympathy from the dealer. From the internet I see many similar complaints and all have no resolution from Honda.

32 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2010

The week prior to my transmissions totally failing I begin to notice how rough it was changing from 1st to 2nd gear. The car begins to hesitate before it changed gears as if it was slipping, I couldn't accept the possibility. It was a 2003 Honda (suppose to be a reliable vehicle). Today I was on the expressway taking my youngest son to school and the car jerked violently which frightened me extremely but I managed to pull it together and take my foot off the accelerator and cut on my hazard lights. Drove the car at a very low speed safely off the highway and dropped my son off at daycare. I put the car in low gear and changed gears manually and drove it to aamco. After diagnostic I was told it was my transmissions and it would cost $2800 - $3200 to repair. I just knew it was a sensor or computer issue never in a million years I thought or believed it was my transmission. Previously owning two other older model Honda's before and providing proper maintenance to those vehicles as well as this one. Having driven both over 200,000 and never needing a major repair like a transmissions leads me to believe this was a defective transmission. My beliefs lead to doing a little research to see if Honda already had a recall. To my disbelief there were hundreds of complaints from people having the same experience and their vehicle having even less miles. The series of events are too common for this to be a coincidence. My vehicle will be towed to a Honda dealer in the morning. I will be submitting a complaint with them as well. Please do the right thing and investigate the issue. Hard working people dont deserve to bite the expense of repairing something thats clearly a manufacturing issue.

33 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. The contact was driving 50 mph when the transmission began to slip between gears. When he would attempt to accelerate, the vehicle would not move forward but the engine would exhibit an unusual increase in rpms. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the dealer advised the contact that the third gear pressure switch would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired yet the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was informed that the transmission would need to be replaced. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not further repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000 and the current mileage was approximately 90,000.

34 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2010

My 2003 Honda Accord v6 was dealer kept from initial purchase till today. Recently as of 9/13/2010 my transmission was slipping. The mileage on my car is 111,000. The Honda dealer after investigating has quoted me approximately $4,640 for a transmission replacement. I am out of warranty period According to Honda americas in CA and therefore nothing can be done.

35 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2010

2003 Honda Accord. Consumer states problems with vehicle transmission the consumer stated the transmission intermittently malfunctioned as it shifted up and or down through second gear. The transmission would slip and not engage into the next gear. Power to the wheels would be lost and the engine would rev up to about 5500 rpm. Also, when driving at low speeds, an abrupt shift would sometimes occur when applying slight acceleration/deceleration. In general, shifts in lower gear sometimes did not seem to be as smooth as normal, either taking too long to move from one gear to the next or sometimes shifting abruptly. The consumer stated a recall was issued regarding the transmission. Repairs were made on October 5, 2004, but it appeared the repairs did not permanently resolve the defect. The consumer stated only an oil jet kit was installed as a temporary fix. The second gear of the transmission has since failed. Honda refused to replace the transmission. They stated the vehicle was out of warranty. Updated 12/13/jb.
