5 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2012

Car frequently slipped out of 2nd gear when accelerating on the highway. Honda said a new transmission was needed. This is a known defect that Honda tried to band-aid in 2004. They should be forced to issue a complete transmission recall on 2003 Accord v6 vehicles. There are 810 complaints on carcomplaints. Com specifically for the transmission. Hundreds of others have no doubt gone unreported. Honda knew there was a problem as early as 2004 and hasn't done the right thing. Please help us.

6 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2012

The transmission slipped out of gear while accelerating and merging onto a busy highway. The motor rpms went up but the vehicle was not being powered. This created a dangerous situation for my family and I. After the initial incident, the transmission has slipped out of gear on numerous other occasions. My mechanic advised that the transmission is in need of a rebuild. The vehicle currently has 59425 miles on the odometer.

7 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

While driving on busy street the car violently shifted into first gear at about 25 miles per hour, luckily there were no other cars behind me at the time, had there been this issue could have caused an accident. After this incident the car had intermittent issues with the transmission slipping out of gear. I took it to the Honda dealership and was told the transmission was failing, causing the issues. After researching, I found that this was a common problem with 2003 Accords.

8 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2012

No issues prior to the drive into work 7/3/12, where I experienced extreme downshifting. On the way home, driving 35 to 40 mph, the car slipped out of gear and the engine's rpms skyrocketed. While maneuvering to the right to get out of traffic, transmission re-engaged and downshifted violently. From a stopped position it would move forward briefly, then slip out of gear. Finally, it wouldn't engage in any position (reverse, drive, 1st, 2nd, etc). The only way to get moving was to turn it off and restart. I got it to the dealer by restarting 3 or 4 times. Extremely dangerous in rush hour to lose all power, especially at intersections.

9 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2012

Driving approximately 40 miles an hour in 45 mph zone. When I attempted to accelerate to 45 mph, transmission slipped out of gear. Vehicle came to complete stop. I had turn off vehicle. Restarted engine and carefully and slowly accelerated to 30 mph and drove 2 miles home. Next day I drove vehicle to Honda dealer. Vehicle slipped out of gear twice, each time when attempting to accelerate to higher speed limits. Honda dealer has called to tell me it needs a new transmission. Will receive price quote on 4/23/12.

10 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

Transmission failure. While driving to work, the car shifted out of gear causing the car to violently reduce speed from 30mph to 5mph. Due to this jerk of motion, the car was forced off the road. It's important to note that I was within a mile of the I-66 highway on-ramp and could have not only been severely rear-ended and injured but a major accident could have also occurred.

15 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2011

2003 Honda Accord v6: automatic transmission slipping out of gear; either to neutral and reving high or violently downshifting. It has been slightly noticable for a while but not enough to think it was dangerous. Then within the past 2 weeks it has become more pronounced and dangerous. This occured multiple times on on the highway within a 15 miles drive. Multiple accidents were barely avoided when the downshift or slip would occur with other traffic on the road. I am concerned for my safety and others as this will likely lead to complete transmission failure and end with a crash. I have not taken any steps to fixing this yet becasue I know I will be told I need to buy a new transmission which seems unreasonable when a universal problem is apparent among this model/year of car.

16 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2011

I own a 2003 Honda Accord ex v6. The cars transmission has been slipping for months now, and Honda has not even offered to help correct the problem. I have called numerous times, and they say that until total transmission failure occurs, there is nothing I can do about it. Now the transmission has failed, while I had a client in my car last Friday. We were both jolted forward as the transmission slipped out of third gear and suddenly the engined revved up to 7000 rpm's. I apologized to him, dropped him off, and brought it straight to my local Honda dealer. If this had occurred on the highway, there would have been serious damage or injuries to other cars or drivers. I noticed there is a recall on a part in the transmission, and this hasn't been fixed yet??? now I'm seeing hundreds of other people that this has happened to, and I can't believe that this is not a safety issue!!! if my client or I had been injured in an accident occurring from the faulty transmission, there would be multiple lawsuits filed with Honda for negligence to fix the parts. This needs to be addressed by NHTSA and Honda immediately!!!! if anyone can offer me advice, please do.

17 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 30 mph the transmission failed and the vehicle shifted out of gear; when the rpms increased it shifted back into gear. The failure continued to occur. The vehicle was driven to an authorized dealer. The dealer advised him that the vehicle needed a new transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileages were 97,000.

18 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2011

Transmission started to slip out of gear @ 66k miles in '06. Car was being leased and still under lease, took to dealer and they replaced transmission free of charge under "good faith". Just today the replacement transmission is starting to slip out of gear while driving. Car now has 160k miles. There is obviously a problem with this year transmission as I have had two now and am having issues w/ the replacement.

19 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2010

My complaint pertains to the transmission failure that has occurred 3-December 2010. Purchased new, single owner/driver. This transmission was recalled in 2004 for the 2nd gear of the automatic transmission because it would over heat and possibly explode destroying the transmission. I had the "fix" Honda implemented for this recall done shortly after I received the recall notice. I have had the transmission fluid changed at the Honda dealership only a minimum of every two years as Honda advised me to do pertaining to their maintenance schedule and my driving conditions. I had my transmission fluid changed 2 weeks prior to the transmission failing and it would slip out of 2nd gear going into 3rd gear at a frequency of once per day for three days in a row and then would not happen for a couple days. This issue was resolved by letting of the gas and the car would shift into 3rd successfully. It will fail to accelerate when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. It varies in time when it will re-engage and it has left me in a dangerous situation several times and there is no warning for this failure. It has been reported numerous times and seems to be a common problem of this year and model. Recently I pulled out onto a roadway and began to accelerate, when the transmission failed to engage when shifting into 3rd gear, en route traffic caught up to me and my abrupt failure to accelerate/merge with traffic, caused a near accident of several of those vehicles that were approaching with wet road conditions as to my vehicle that was abruptly stranded and non-mobile. I was nearly rear ended and had no warning that this failure is going to occur. The car that was behind me was able to swerve to the shoulder to avoid striking my car with the front end of their vehicle. I believe this to be a serious safety issue and am very concerned as I have read of hundreds of the exact same issue I have with the same 2003 Honda Accord I own. Honda has a serious problem.

20 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

Driving home a couple hours ago the transmission violently downshifted to first gear when I was accelerating on the parkway doing about 65mph. Threw me violently forward thank god I wear my seat belt or else I probably would have went through the windshield. Would not shift up out of first gear after the initial downshift. Pulled over and restarted my car. Continued about ten minutes really slowly in the right lane until I got off at my exit. I steadily began to brake coming to a red light and all of a sudden it downshifted to a halt making the person behind my slam on their brakes and come to a screeching stop. Continued to drive down the 25mph residential road leading to my house at 20mph because any more acceleration shot the rpms up to redline. When I got to my house I also realized that when I put the car in reverse, the reverse gear does not activate and instead the car just revs as if it is in neutral when giving it gas. This is ridiculous and a serious safety issue to say the least. Since purchasing this car I have always babied it and had the scheduled maintenance performed. There are hundreds of issues like mine and it is known by Honda that these transmissions are a problem. They should stand by their reputation and fix or replace the transmissions free of charge.

21 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began to independently accelerate and decelerate aggressively. The manufacturer stated that they could not assist with repairs, as the vehicle was outside of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage was approximately 107,000. Updated 1/19/2010 the consumer stated while driving 40-45 mph the vehicle began to change gears and slip out of gear on its on. The startling delayed shifts were violent and sudden, within a short period of time, which cause the vehicle to lurch and decelerate in a very aggressive manner. After stopping the vehicle, it would not engage in reverse or move forward above second gear. Updated 03/28/11.

24 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

Honda 2003 Accord exv6 automatic. Complete transmission failure. Began slipping out of gear on Aug 9 2010. Vehicle slipped out of gear rev but vehicle would not move finally slipped back in gear. Extremely concerned I was going to be hit while stalled in intersection. Second time after going to dealership engine did the same thing but on the freeway and had to pull off to emergency lane.

25 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

Purchased the car 1. 5 yrs ago @ 99,000 from a "certified" used Honda dealership. Did all scheduled maintenance. Check engine light came on in 1/10. Replace rear catalytic converter. 2/10 transmission started slipping out of gear and red lining the rpm's. Car would not shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear. Took to mechanic and transmission is blown.

26 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2010

Vehicle "slips" out of gear when driving leaving the transmission to rev in neutral. Gear selector never moves. This "slipping" happens at a variety of speeds, but particularly when the automatic transmission is in passing gear or downshifting to go up hills. Sometimes all it takes to get the vehicle back in gear is moving the gear selector to neutral while coasting and then moving it back into drive. Other times the vehicle must be pulled over to the side of the road and in time it will go back into drive without slipping out of gear again.

27 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Automatic transmission slips out of gear going from 2nd to 3rd or when coasting in 15 to 25 mph range. Car loses power and hesitates causing traffic blockage during rush hour. Car has to be stopped and then re-accelerated to move again. This can happen anytime vehicle does stop and go traffic. I. E. All of rush hour traffic.

28 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2009

2003 Honda Accord ex v6 has faulty transmission. I purchased this car used in 2006 and was unaware that the transmission had been recalled. The car did not come with any service records. The car is slipping out of gear and downshifting suddenly as well as getting stuck in 2nd and 3rd gear while driving in heavy traffic. I was on an incline in rush hour highway traffic today and the car would not go over 20 miles an hour.

29 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

While driving the 2003 Honda Accord v-6 with 109,000 miles, the transmission started slipping out of gear; within 500 miles of the slip out of gear and whilst traveling at 65 miles per hour on interstate-5 in los angeles, the transmission completely failed; rpm shot up, and pushing gas pedal had no affect of speed or control. Car immediately slowed down in the fast lane and created a major freeway hazard; other drivers swerved to avoid me whilst I continued to slow and drift to right shoulder and off-ramp; upon shutting of car and waiting 20 minutes I was able to travel at a slow rate of speed to my house in first gear only and in no gear some of the time. In front of my house, transmission failed again. Afraid to drive car and the scar of nearly causing an accident, I had car towed on a tow truck to mechanic. Transmission mechanic diagnosed that transmission has "died" and needs to be completely rebuilt or replaced. Transmission mechanic with 30+ years of experience is correcting situation by rebuilding the transmission completely. This sudden failure almost caused a catastrophic accident that had to potential to involve me and other motorists. This is a major safety hazard and defect.

30 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2009

At 55 mph on highway, car suddenly slipped out of gear and rpms spiked up. No forward power. Had to coast on to the shoulder and shutoff and restart the car. Problem continued on that trip but seemed ok thereafter. Brought to dealer but nothing found. Over the next few years problem has occurred every so often unpredictably (no pattern) despite changing transmission fluid and staying current on maintenance. Increased in frequency at 100k miles. Most days the car is fine but then the problem will occur suddenly. Has happened when merging on to highways, when already at highway speeds and sometimes shortly after accelerating from a stop at a traffic light or stop sign. Occasionally happens when yielding (I. E. Slowing down for a yield sign and then trying to accelerate again).

31 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2009

2003 Honda Accord v6 transmission slips out of gear, and it will not go in reverse or shift beyond second gear once this starts happening. Events leading to the failure were normal wear and tear. This vehicle has 120,000 miles and has been taken to the dealer for regular maintenance. It also had the transmission recall work from 2004 performed shortly after it was announced. It occurs shortly after starting to drive as soon as the transmission is warm. It causes extreme jerks due to the sudden deceleration which could result in an accident in traffic. It causes problems then accelerating and the car is unable to be driven past 30-35 mph. The correction is to replace the transmission. The dealership is looking into this for me now and may have old parts available.

32 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

Near miss = car would not shift out of second gear - therefore resulting in power loss. This is a serious hazard as the car loses speed and approaching car almost rear end you. Due to transmission failure - now having to get new transmission!.

33 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2009

Car slips out of gear at high speeds or low speed down shifts on its own wont shift out of first gear at all wont reverse.

34 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2009

I have a 2003 Honda Accord ex with the 3. 0l v-6. I am expressing total loss of power with my transmission. My wife was going to work one morning, the car slipped out of gear and she was stranded in the middle of a 3 lane highway with no emergency pull off. The car was going up a slope, so it could not coast out of the way. I took the car to a local transmission, he told me the transmission was shot and needed to be replaced. I then proceeded to take it to the dealership, which quoted me a price of $3500 to repair. The reason I want to let you know about this problem is first off, its unsafe. She could have gotten into a wreck and hurt herself. Second reason, this is a known problem with this particular car. There are literally hundreds of complaints online of exactly what I described to you. The dealership claims to have made a repair back in 2004, yet the problem still continues. The best case scenario for me is that you hold Honda liable for their known faulty transmissions. It shouldn't take someone getting seriously hurt over a known issue. In my case I was lucky. There was a police officer behind my wife when she had the transmission issue and he was able to prevent any cars from hitting her.

35 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

I have a 2003 Honda Accord, it has 142,000 miles on it. The transmission suddenly started shifting hard on 1-5-09 then on 1-6-09 it would down shift erratically and then back up again. I took it to a trusted mechanic who told me the transmission has gone out and would need to be replaced or rebuilt. This is extremely unsafe as I was nearly rearended twice on 1-6-09 when it decided to downshift suddenly for no reason at all. 1-7-09 I went to the mechanic shop and picked up the car and drove it home and about 10 miles from my house I stopped a stop sign and after that it hasn't shifted out of 1st gear since then, I had to drive the rest of the way at 20mph with my flashers on pulling over so the cars behind me to would go around. As of right now it's sitting in my driveway and I am having to borrow friends cars or get a ride to work as it is my only mode of transportation and I do not have $3000 lying around for the repair. This I have found through my internet searches is a common problem and hasn't had a recall cause "it doesn't pose a safety threat" well I'm hear to tell you it does. Not only are you jolted forward into the steering wheel, with your seat belt catching you, ouch, when it shifts erratically but I had people swerving around me not to run into me this is insane. I have read literally hundreds of complaints about this problem recurring not only once but multiple times over again after the transmission is replaced. It is ridiculous that a recall has not been made. Are they waiting for someone to be seriously injured or killed in a collision due to the malfunction???.
