1 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2016

I was on my way home from work, exiting the downtown area and entering the freeway, when the transmission slipped out of gear. The transmission would not re-engage without moving the shifter down to the d3 gear first. I was able to limp the car using this method to the nearest transmission repair shop. The transmission slipped out of gear several more times on the drive to the repair facility. It was diagnosed with a faulty third clutch and a repair estimate of $3200-3400 for a rebuilt transmission. I chose a different repair shop, with an equally good reputation, and had the transmission rebuilt for $2700. It has been back to the same repair shop 3 times after the rebuild with similar symptoms. They are not able to determine the cause of the recurring slippage. Research reveals that hundreds of other Honda Accord owners have encountered the same issue of transmission failure. It appears to be the same parts failing in a majority of instances. The transmission will slip out of gear from a dead stop, in motion at slow speeds or moderate speeds with no detectible pattern. The transmission failing while the car is in motion creates an extremely dangerous, potentially fatal, driving situation. I don't feel safe driving this vehicle. Honda has issued a recall on this transmission already but not for this particular problem. My vehicle doesn't qualify for the recall.

2 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2013

Transmission slipped out of gear and the engine revved up in rpms. Car continues to not be able to maintain shifting gears effectively.

3 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

Preceding a high pitch whine the vehicles slipped out of gear at third gear. There were no prior warnings. Upon investigating other Honda transmission problems I found the same problem was found in other 2004 Honda Accords. However, I was told by Honda that my VIN # did not match the recall.

4 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

Vehicle: Honda Accord v6, 2004 problem: automatic transmission failed while on a busy street and nearly was rear ended and left me stranded on busy road. Honda is not admitting any fault at this moment when this model has a recall dated 2004 which I was not made aware of when the vehicle was worked on at their dealership in 2010. This defect is a safety issue because the transmission was dropping out of gear when on an interstate traveling at 70mph.

5 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2011

2004 Honda Accord v6 automatic transmission issue. Transmission slips out of gear while driving. Was fortunate not to get into an accident as my car had no power while travelling up a grade on I-5 in los angeles county.

6 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2011

Without warning my automatic transmission will slip out of gear. Doesn't seem to be related to speed or length of time driven. Just random. It could happen 20 times a day or not happen for weeks. I have contacted Honda and they said it is not a recall issue, although I have found literally hundreds of the same complaint online. Was told that they might be able to offer me some assistance on repair, but not 100% and not a common issue.

7 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

This has happened twice while driving on highway. The tcs (traction control) warning light comes on as well the engine icon light, and then the automatic transmission on the 2004 Accord v6 won't drop out of high gear. It feels like it's stuck in 5th or 4th gear and won't downshift. I have to stop car, restart it, then the transmission works like normal.

8 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

1. Per the 2004 Honda Accord owners manual, the transmission fluid does not have to be replaced until 120,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. A few weeks ago, at 92,000 miles, the car was 6 years old so we had the transmission fluid replaced for the first time using Honda fluid, all in strict Accordance with the Honda owner's manual. The mechanic said the original fluid was very gray and there was a lot of metal attached to the drain plug. It looked really bad. 2. On 4/30/10 at 92,500 miles, (500 miles later), we were driving at 35 mph and the car started cutting out. We stopped immediately and the car idled fine. We started to accelerate again and the car would not shift out of first gear. We had car towed immediately to the Honda dealer. 3. On 3/31/10, the Honda dealer told us that the transmission needs to be replaced. I spoke to the dealer and Honda motor company and showed them NHTSA campaign id number 04v176000, which is a recall of the 2004 Honda Accord automatic transmission, but they told me it was VIN specific and suggested I file a complaint with the NHTSA in hopes that the recall would be expanded.

9 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Honda Accord. The contact stated as she was driving 40 mph the transmission stopped without giving any warnings. The vehicle shifted out of gear and stopped in the middle of the road. The vehicle was towed to the Honda dealer and they informed her that the transmission burned out and needed to be replaced. There was no warranty on the transmission and the contact stated that she had to pay for the repairs. The failure mileage was 104,000.

10 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

Commuting to work in the morning, when I was getting on the freeway the car seemed to slip out of gear. The rpm's went very high (7k), but I couldn't accelerate at all. I coasted for a while and was eventually able to accelerate normally again. The car behaved normally the rest of the time on the freeway, but had the same thing happen again after I exited the freeway. After stopping at an intersection, I couldn't get out of 1st gear for a while. After work, I drove the car around the back streets for a little to see if I thought I could get home, figuring that once I got on the freeway, everything would be fine. After a few miles on the freeway, it happened again. I couldn't accelerate at all, and had to cut across 4 lanes with just my momentum to pull over on the shoulder. Once there, I restarted the car and tried to see if I could move at all. I couldn't. In park, I could rev the engine and see the rpm's increase, but when I shifted to drive or reverse, I couldn't get the engine to engage or move at all. I restarted the car several times, and eventually got it to respond, but shortly after getting back on the freeway, it happened again, so I pulled over once more and called a tow truck. The tow truck got me back to the Honda dealer, where I later found out I needed a new transmission. This is a 2004 with 90k miles.

While driving down route 9 in old bridge, NJ my vehicle slipped out of gear. It was during rush hour and my car slowed down to 20 mph.

12 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2007

I was driving home my Honda Accord ex v6 (2004) and it slipped out of gear between 2nd gear and 3rd gear. I tried to get to a repair shop and within a few more miles of driving all gears stopped working stranding me in traffic. My 2004 car has approx 120,000 miles and is 3 years and 7 months old. As its not under warranty I towed to a transmission shop who say the transmission is shot and needs replacing for $1,500. 00. It looks like now on this site that there may be a trouble with this Accord automatic transmission? can I be reimbursed for this expense?.
