6 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2017

I have a 2009 Honda Accord lx-p (4 cylinder, 2. 4 l). It consumes excessive engine oil. I did a oil consumption test ( had almost 107k miles on the car) at a Honda service center. Result said the car consumed 1 quarter of oil for every 1000 miles (I never see any warning light when oil gets this low. ) Honda service center, after taking about a month, said the vehicle meets the requirement and therefor don't qualify for repair. So looks like I will have to check the oil level every week or so, and also refill oil at every 1000 miles instead of standard 3000 miles.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem

The car has excessive oil consumption (0. 75 q per 1000 miles) based on a recent oil consumption test. Every 2100 miles or so the low oil warning light lit. Honda refuses to repair.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2016

Honda knows all about their 6 cyl engines burning through oil but does nothing about it. My car started burning and now leaking oil badly before it hit 100,000 miles but I am now looking at a large repair bill as my car isn't on "the list". Not sure how it couldn't be as articles cite 6 cyl Accords between the years 2008 and 2012. Mine is a 6 cyl Accord, 2009: how is that not on the list?.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

My 2009 Honda Accord was purchased by our local Honda dealer off the lot brand new. Vehicle has always a good vehicle and no serious problems. It was in a minor crash and had some of the frame readjusted. Recently, (within 6 months) I have noticed the vehicle consuming more oil than usual. I followed up with Honda to see what I could do with the extended warranty notice I received in the mail regarding the vehicle. The extended warranty stated that the piston rings may be sticking more than usual and the vehicle could be consuming more oil than normal. The warranty stated it was good for up to 8 years from the purchase or 125,000 miles, whichever came first. At the time the Honda was at 134,000 miles. Honda told me to take it to my local Honda dealer and ask how to start the process on the piston rings. The local dealer stated they needed to start with an oil consumption test with an oil change, then I would have to come back after 1,000 miles for them to track the oil. I brought the vehicle in and was dealt with more bad news. The local dealer stated that I could not start the oil consumption test until I fixed two other oil leaks the vehicle currently has. I was told the vehicle has a valve gasket leak which also needed a valve adjustment as well as a crank seal leak. The local dealer quoted me that the valve gasket would cost $225, the valve adjustment would be $325, and the crank seal leak would be $245. Everywhere I have heard otherwise the cost of these fixes would be much more than I was quoted. After receiving this news I called Honda again to create a claim. I still have not been able to speak to my case representative on the problem. My concern is that the sticking piston rings could have lead to the two other leaks my vehicle is having. I feel as though Honda needs to cover the costs to fix this problem seeing as though the piston rings are an issue.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

This is a 2009 vehicle and I was notified August 2015 of a oil consumption recall but ask that you have 125,000 miles or less to fix however when you notify a consumer 7 years after it has been sold not to have that many miles I believe it's very unfair to the consumer because this is a problem I have had this this vehicle since ive owned it and now the dealership is refusing to fix it because of the mileage. There is no specific amount noted on how much oil consumption this car should have and Honda dealership is using that to their advantage and ask that I have 3/4 of a quart of oil consumption before they would even consider which is so unrealistic.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2016

In regards to Honda safety recall jn9. Warranty extension: sticking pistons rings resulting in high engine oil consumption. I had the car inspected by the Honda dealership in thousand oaks, CA. Starting back in December 28 2015. They did an oil consumption test that lasted 3,000 miles on the road and had me come in every 1000 miles of those 3k miles. Every oil consumption evaluation at the designed mark is burning through 1. 2 qt of oil every 1,000 miles. They claim that is standard for the car to burn that much oil. My old 2003 v8 GMC yukon does not burn any oil at all. Jut last week on July 19th 2016 my oil engine light came on, they (dealer) top me off with another 1. 2 qt of oil off the records. No service report was taken. I do not believe a four cylinder engine should use that much oil unless indeed the piston rings are sticking. . Please help!.

25 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I have had my Honda Accord 2009 v6 serviced for constant spark plug fouling and oil consumption. After a total of 10 visits, and over 40 days without my car over the course of 3 years, I had received a total of 3 spark plug sets, two oil consumption tests, lost two catalytic converters, and O2 sensors. Even with this constant spark plug replacement, it did not alleviate any issues. I kept breaking down on the side of the road with a rumbling, misfiring engine. After numerous trips to Honda, they refused to acknowledge the problem. After speaking to a district rep and being referred to paragon Honda in woodside, NY, they had agreed to replace my engine. They have now had it for two months. After receiving a new engine, I instantly received check engine lights stating the car was running too lean. After returning it for another week, I received it back, but this time, it would literally choke out and stall at every other red light. I returned to Honda with a check engine light for too rich and a car that would not make it more then a few miles if stop signs were involved. It has now been there for two weeks, on top of the two months. Plus the 40 days, that's a total of 4 lost months. I had to fight this weekend for a loaner car, which for them, seemed like a very difficult thing to do. Honestly, I don't know how the NHTSA has allowed Honda to keep their oil consuming dangerous cars on the road, I have broke down in the left lane of a 4 lane highway, and I know this should not be happening. I am a meticulous person, who constantly checks his own oil, plugs, filters, etc. . . . I monitor my O2 sensors for bad fuel trims constantly, and I have never been nothing but disappointed with this hunk of junk. I've filed consumer complaints, Honda complaints, to no regard.

26 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2012

I went to independence Honda and asked as to why between maitainence, I was having to add oil. I was told to bring it back when it was needed, and he would document it. Come to find out, they were doing an oil consumption test. Independence Honda closed and is now legends Honda. He told me to bring it in and they would fix it. Gave me a loaner car. Called me back and said they would have to do a oil consumption test. They claim they only put in about about a quart per 1000 miles. Regardless of what my dip stick shows. I will just need to watch my oil. I've had to have my spark plugs replaced twice in the year. Honda continues to actively conceal the defect from consumers and deny there's a known problem.

27 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2012

Purchased a used 2009 Honda Accord from carmax in madison tennessee. In Dec. 2012 check engine light came on. No oil in engine. 2009, 6 cylinder v-tech. Have monitored the oil consumption after dealer overfilled, with pictures of overfill, with milage and various pictures of the dip stick. This engine has an eco system. No permanent damage but dealer encourages an oil change every 4000 miles and not what is in the manual.

29 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2012

Sitting at red light waiting for turn signal, car begins to rough idle. Upon turn and acceleration, car spits, sputters, jerks, jolts and would not accel properly. Engine light begins blinking. Motor runs/idles very rough. Next morning on drive in to local dealership, vsa light illuminates and stays illuminated. Car still idles and runs very rough, spitting and sputtering etc. Dealership inspects car. Dealership determines the mount of oil in the car is too low. No evidence of oil leaks. Dealership consults with Honda. Oil consumption test is now recommended. I am to return the car to the Honda dealership to check the oil level at 1,000 miles intervals for an unspecified period of time. This consumption will be forwarded to Honda to determine what "fix" will be recommended. Internet search provides endless identical complaints with no resolution from Honda or dealerships.

31 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

Ever since I bought my car I've noticed that my oil burns up a lot faster than other cars. When I get an oil change done it only takes less than 2 months for the oil in the tank to burn away quickly. I use the recommended 5w 20. I'm having to top off the tank more often and spend more money on oil consumption.

32 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2011

Driving on highway at 55 mpg noticed vibration coming from engine. Felt like engine mounts had failed. When I pulled into our home driveway it felt like I was driving a diesel powered car. I noticed oil light glowing. Checked oil level, nothing showed on dip stick. Under 3000 miles since last oil check. Took to dealer and complained. Checked for oil leaks-none. Flashed engine management with upgrade said service bulletin from Honda should fix issue. Kept checking oil levels at each gas fill up. Noticed a quart of oil used around every thousand miles of mixed driving. By 50,000 that had dropped to using a quart of oil every 600 miles and by 56,000 miles a quart of oil every 500 miles. Engine ran rough all the time and blew smoke. No visible engine leaks from dye test. Engine oil would turn black within 1000 miles after an oil change at dealer. Dealer instigated oil consumption test every 1000 miles. Used 2. 5 quarts of oil. At 58,000 miles dealer received permission to replace motor with new short block from Honda and remanufacture heads with all new parts. This was after dealer tore down the motor and confirmed it was shot. Scored bore and destroyed rings, and black oil sludge in motor. Engine oil had been replaced at dealer within Honda recommended intervals. Never heard of a Honda motor failing at 58,000 miles in my life. New motor runs great and car is like new again. I'm glad the engine failed within the 60,000 drivetrain warranty. It would have been thousands of dollars to replace if Honda did not come through with a new engine. Reading on the internet that this is an all to common problem with 2008, 2009 4cyl engines. There should be a recall of these engines, as in the 2011 model year Honda upgraded engine parts and the new motors do not display the same problems as I experienced with my engine.

33 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 60 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to drive slowly to the dealer with the hazard lights activated. The technicians advised that there was no oil remaining in the vehicle despite the oil level gauge indicating that there was over 80 percent of oil remaining in the vehicle. An oil consumption test and a software update were performed on the vehicle and the spark plugs were replaced yet, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the vehicle began to stall shortly after repairs. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
