2 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2015 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/29/2020

Complaint to NHTSA ref. 2015 Honda Civic-ex (VIN: 19xfb2f85fe251724) please note that our referenced vehicle contains a design flaw and product defect. The car was not starting due to a major electrical problem. The technicians at a Honda certified dealer diagnosed the problem as a product defect associated with the right front door handle touch sensor. According to an advisor at Honda of escondido (California), the door handle sensor failure constituted both a hardware and software malfunction. The advisor indicated that this is a safety issue and that he has not seen this phenomenon occur with respect to a Honda Civic during his many years at Honda of escondido. It appears that the amount of current (amp) draw was the main culprit in depleting the battery?s power capacity and degrading it to a point that the car would not start as a result of the product defect. It also caused the vsa (I. E. , the vehicle stability assist) system to malfunction and behave erratically as well. In our assessment, this situation constitutes a public interest consideration as the safety, well-being and welfare of every owner is at risk when driving the same 2015 Honda Civic model. In our judgement, a recall is required to prevent severe accidents from happening and to preclude this highly risky and dangerous safety situation from recurring. Thank you for taking the necessary correction action.

6 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2011 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/18/2011

The trunk latch , once locked by a key, will not engage and open the trunk from the inside of the car. I brought my auto 2x to the dealer. It occasionally will open, but more often than not, it will not engage. The service manager was present and able to see this problem. He was baffled. But they said I used too much force to unlock the trunk. This after having the car for over 6 months! this is my 2nd Honda Civic and I never had an issue before.

7 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2010 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

My friend and I put our purses in the trunk of my Honda Civic 2010 at a busy restaurant parking lot. Honda has an interior valet key hole to lock the trunk; so I feel safe to leave my things in the trunk. This key hole is at the bottom left side of the driver's seat. Someone broke the driver's window and opened the trunk with the valet trunk latch locked. I have the trunk always valet key locked; so I was surprised someone was able to pop the trunk. I took my car to a body shop place. He easily discovered that a plastic cover that is around the valet trunk key lock can be removed and a small latch can be moved to the left and the trunk opens. He said that he didn't know about this equipment failure. He said. "I can't trust my things in the trunk with a valet person, after this discovery. " I was shocked. I buy Honda's because I like this feature. I have gone through a lot of emotional distress because my identity was stolen. The valet lock isn't broken but it is unsafe for those who don't know, like me, that it's not safe to leave your belongs in the trunk of this car.

9 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

The key lock on my 2003 Honda Civic no longer works. It seems as if a different key is needed to open door and quite often the key will not go into the lock. When it does go in, the lock is stiff or frozen and will not turn. I originally thought this was a random issue but have encoutered 3 other Civic owners with the same problem.

10 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

Leading up to the failure, it was necessary ziggle the steering wheel in order to turn the key and start the car. On July 4, 2010 the ignition totally seized - stranding the driver. It was necessary to tow the car to a dealership. Honda advised the car was just out of warranty. The following parts were replaced at a cost of $1026. Ignition switch, dummy sidewinder and the lock assembly / steering. In a letter to Honda we stated that the part hadn't been reasonably durable and that the warranty didn't apply. The car ignition failed long before it should have. Honda agreed to pay $653. 00 towards repairs in response to our letter.

Honda informed me that there were recalls for other models for this problem, but not this year/make/model. This is surely a safety defect, though not life threatening.

15 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/05/2009

A screw holding in place the trunk sensor broke into two pieces and we could not open the trunk, either with the cable release or the fob. There are two approximately 1/16 inch wide screws holding the trunk sensor in place so that it can open the trunk on command from the fob or cable release system. This vehicle has not ben in an accident nor has it been jarred violently in any way. This screw breaking in two pieces happened during normal use. There is no key release system to lower the back support section of the rear seats nor is there a rear lock to enter the trunk. So,to fix the problem ,my mechanic had to remove enough bolts to enter from behind the rear seat. Had a child been locked in the trunk,it would have taken at least an hour to extracate him or her. Thank-you!.

16 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/11/2009

I own a 2008 Honda Civic. July of 2009 I experience a problem with the driver door. The door would not close. When I tried closing the door I noticed it was not aligned. I was at work, so I went inside for assistance. My CO-worker could not close my door as well. We went back inside to get more assistance and when we came back outside, a car parked next to me, decided to leave and bent my car door toward the engine. I have had it fixed in the mean time through my insurance. Last week we were out and all the doors jammed. So now we have to press the unlock key fob at the same time we open the door. When we put the key inside the key hole it does not unlock the car.

17 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

While driving, the hood to my 2003 Honda Civic ex came unlatched and hit the windshield, shattering the windshield and otherwise damaging the vehicle. Upon investigation, the hood latch mechanism was defective. It had nothing but two bolts connecting it to the tierod and the metal that attached the latch to the hood was not soldered to the vehicle. As a result, the car requires $2700 worth of repairs covered by insurance with the deductible of $1000 that I have to pay plus between $500 to $1000 to replace the hood and the latch. I have pictures and the parts are still available. The car has yet to be prepared. The driver suffers from heightened anxiety as a result of the incident. Thank you.

18 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/25/2008

Driver's side windows does not want to close properly. Informed the dealer and the dealer saying could not find the problem. Already reported 3 times. One time was fixed by the dealer but happened again. I wanted the defective parts replaced but the dealer did nothing.

19 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

Several interior controls, such as door handles and the parking brake, are metalized plastics. As the car ages, the metal plating starts to peal off. As it comes off in pieces, it presents a sharp edge that can cut the user. We have had three different instances of hand cuts that could have led to accidents as the driver attempts to keep blood from the cut from getting on clothing, car interior, etc. The dealer replaced a door handle, at my cost, on the first instance. Subsequently we have tried to remove the rest of the plating from the effected parts. Unfortunately, the remaining fragments still adhere well to the parts for now and degrade slowly. I fully expect to sustain similar injuries in the future as the deterioration continues.

24 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

On the morning of March 1, 2005 I attempted to fill my gas tank. I pushed the fuel access door release lever and nothing happened. I attempted this several times without success. I contacted a Honda dealer later in the day and explained the problem to him. He suggested I get another person to jiggle the door while I pressed the lever as Honda had a know fuel access door alignment problem. This did not solve the problem. I had to break the door open so that I could add fuel to the vehicle. After breaking open the door I noticed that pressing the release lever did not retract what was left of the post which would allow the fuel access door to open.

25 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/14/2003

Recently I was in a near head-on collision with my 2000 Honda Civic ex and I have a concern with how the Civic reacted during the collision. I would first like you provide the circumstances of the accident. I was struck by an oncoming truck as I began a left-hand turn. I had completely stopped before I was hit. The driver stated he was doing 45mph, and he was driving a 1997 Toyota tacoma. The damage to the Civic was completely to the front engine compartment, and both airbags did deploy. My safety concern is that the latched back seat section behind the driver seat (the back seat folds down, in 2 sections, to create more room with the trunk) became unlatched when the car was hit and fell completely forward. Isnt this where infants and children are to be put? how would this have affected an infant or child if they had been in the car?.

26 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Electronic doors automatically locked by themselves within 5 to 10 seconds. This could cause a problem when getting out of the vehicle with the key still in the vehicle. Consumer contacted the dealer, who stated there was no solution for this problem. When the key was in the ignition, the doors locked by themselves.
