Many times, especially when the weather is colder, the manual transmission will pop out of third gear/grind/or will not even engage in third. This is dangerous, especially in heavy traffic or when turning a corner because it causes a quick deceleration and the person behind you can't anticipate that you are going to slow down suddenly because there is no braking involved. Not to mention, after this occurs, the engine revs due to the missed gear, and you have to quickly shift into second or fourth gear to get going once again. This is a high rate problem and can be proven with a simple www search- it is all over the internet car forums and even has been reported by edmunds. Com. Some people say their dealer is replacing the trans fluid as a fix and it helps, others are doing it at their own expense because their dealer refuses to assist. My dealer won't admit to the issue.
With less than 6,500 miles, the Civic si continues to grind on 3rd gear on a day to day basis. Today February 17th 2008, while shifting at higher rpm's, 2nd gear refuses to engage which caused the gear to grind atrociously. Several complaints have been filed and owners are have yet to be contacted with information regarding this. This transmission problem causes the car to slow down excessively while shifting problem is occurring and is a safety hazard for myself and driver behind me.
When accelerating, shifting into third gear is never reliable. When you shift from 2nd gear to 3rd, it grinds and then pops out. This leads me to over rev the engine. Currently, there is no service bulletin for this problem nor is their a recall.
I own a 2007 Honda Civic si. I have heard a popping type sound coming from underneath the car or on the drivetrain. I hear it when going into or out of driveways. I have taken it to the dealership and they don't know what is wrong with it. Also I have had problems with third gearin my transmission. It seems like it does not want to grab third gear. I had to have my clutch replaced at 4k miles. I was told it had to have been my "hard shifting". I was told if it happens again, I am responsible for the repairs. I have taken my car several times after this incident to prevent it from happening again, and they say they cant make my car do the same thing that happens when I drive it. I am very frustrated that Honda will not step up and take care of the problem. Instead they want to blame it on my "poor driving".
Problem with 3rd gear popping out or not going in happens in all conditions.
Grinding when shifting into 3rd gear upshift or downshift esp when rpms when going into 3rd gear are over 3,000 rpm car now has 47k miles has been doing this for over 15k miles is getting progressively worse.

The Honda Civic si manual transmission can be very unsafe to drive especially when driven cold. When shifting into third gear there is feeling that the gear isn't all the way in. When the clutch is released the gear will pop out. This problem is also common in other Honda vehicle's such as the rsx. This problem increases the chances of being rear ended and also puts tremendous wear on the transmission as the gear pops and grinds. Honda service tells me that its is my driving that is causing this problem but over a thousand threads has been posted online about this problem. Honda has done nothing to fix this problem except call us poor drivers.
The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic. When the vehicle is started in the mornings, the engine becomes sluggish during the first two miles of driving. The engine does not stall, but has little acceleration power while driving 5 mph. After the engine has warmed, the vehicle operates normally. The vehicle has been diagnosed by the dealer 3 times. The current mileage was 8,500 and failure mileage was 3,113. Updated 5/5/08 the consumer stated he was not able to accelerate to keep up with the traffic. Updated 05/05/08.
The manual transmission shifts badly, and there have been occasions when it won't go into gear. Also, when cold, and in lower gears, it is very hesitant and choppy. I believe it's the throttle. There have been a few occasions when I've stepped on the brake and it's tried to move forward. Honda says there is nothing wrong with this car. They treat me as if I don't know how to drive.
Third gear on my '07 Honda Civic si coupe is both frequently impossible to engage (every third or fourth shift change) and pops out of gear during driving (typically 2-3 times an hour during continuous driving). This poses potential dangers while driving as there is failure in the application of power to the driven wheels, which is essential for controlling the vehicle. The issue is known to be common in the 6 speed si transmission. Honda denies the issue, stating that the engagement problem is caused by not fully depressing the clutch. I always fully depress the clutch when shifting, have driven manually transmission vehicles for 41 years, and have never had this problem with any vehicle, let alone a gearshift which pops out of gear during normal driving). The failure to engage is probably more an annoyance than an issue, however the popping out of gear while driving is a serious road hazard and risk; for example, if one is cornering on snow covered or wet pavement, the sudden loss of power to the driven wheels could cause the vehicle to veer off course and result in a crash. The unfortunate driver who does not immediately recognize the loss of power transmission, or what to do to recover, is certainly placed in a highly compromised position, to say the least, and at worst may find him or herself in a vehicle which is totally out of control. Nothing has been done by Honda to either acknowledge or correct the issue. This is an accident waiting to happen. The issue has existed since the vehicle was new, an has become progressively worse with time.
3rd gear pops out and grinds. Happens more when its cold but still grinds on nice days. Even after changing the transmission fluid.
The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic. When shifting from second to third gear at 50 mph, the gear hesitates and makes a grinding sound. The vehicle feels as if it will stall. The failure only occurs in third gear. The dealer could not duplicate the failure, although other vehicles of the same year, make, and model were experiencing the same failure. The failure mileage was less than 5 and current mileage was 12,000.
Within weeks of purchase, returned to dealership regarding excessive grinding of gears, lack of confidence in engaging gear change all when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Dealership suggested it to be break in period or that I wasn't used to a performance 6m transmission (I drive a 2003 Nissan 350z 6m). Next visit, resulted from more of the above, I cited website research and reference to transmission fluid not of quality. Dealership did change and problem was lessened. Third visit, had service tech drive vehicle and he came to conclusion that "it would get better with use", I told him that I couldn't believe that Honda would accept that solution. I then drove for period of time thinking it was my skills and that it would be better when broken in, until finally, I called out of frustration and concern for my safety because the transmission was actually popping out of third gear to neutral after I felt like it was engaged, or I was having to double clutch/shift and thus, causing me serious safety concerns and near collision/rear end due to the unexpected times it would occur. This last visit to the dealership I was told that the district manager would have to drive and we'd schedule a visit when he was in town. This time they had the vehicle for two days and reported that both dm and service manager drove without any recognition of reported symptoms and nothing was done. I was told they have not had this complaint, they took some compression readings and they would keep in touch. I accepted, but visited my sales person, and expressed my concerns and suggested that I was so disappointed in this "non-typical" Honda response that I sell the vehicle. The symptoms persist causing me a lack of confidence in vehicle performance and concerns for the safety of myself, other passengers and other vehicles. Thus, leading me to file this complaint.

I have noticed that when shifting my car from 1st to 2nd gear, it grinds going into gear. This usually occurs when the rpms of the engine are above 4k. I haven't taken the car into the dealer because of it yet, but plan to soon.

I have a 2006 Honda Civic si. The tranmission has had problems shifting into third gear. On many occasions the shifter has popped out of third gear while driving. I brought the car to Honda with this problem. They changed some fluid and hoped it would fix it. It didn't. It's been several months since then, and the problem seems to be getting worse. I hope Honda can figure out how to fix this, because it doesn't seem safe.

Since buying my vehicle on numerous occasions when putting the vehicle into neutral the car will stall. When putting the car back into gear it won't start up again until I put the car back into neutral take my foot off the clutch and then put it back into gear again. Since the 3rd day of owning the car this has happened . The dealership checked the battery terminals but it continued. Does this whether it's raining or not. After several trips to the dealer the mechanic put my car on the diagnostic machine and called the code numbers in to the company who told them what else to do but it started doing this again not too long after. Usually, the dealer tells me they're not able to get the car to do it for them so they don't know what else to do.
On, October 10, 2003 I took my Honda Civic 2001 to an outside vendor (firestone tire & service centers) where they did a computerized engine analysis but they found nothing wrong and the problem still continued. So, on November 14, 2003 I took my vehicle for my 5000-mile max service. I explain to the service representative that my car will not start at times and when it started it felt like it was going to cut off. So the service department did a courtesy inspection. But they found nothing wrong and the problem continued for a couple of weeks. I thought my problems were over until September 11, 2003 when my car started racing for no reason. Then I tried to turn into mcdonalds and my car wouldn't move. So my friend and a strange pushed my car into the parking lot. Then I called aaa to tow my car to my apartment building. The next morning I towed my car to west broad Honda. Later that morning a representative for west broad Honda stated my transmission need to be replaced. (my car only had 65,000 miles).
After a few months of driving my brand new 2003 Honda Civic si. I started to experience a very "notchy" and rough feeling in my manual transmission. Occasionally it will also grind gears, and I am more than definite that I am shifting properly. It gets worse in the winter because the car will hesitate a lot when trying to go in any gear. I brought my vehicle into Honda north of danvers, MA for them to inspect the problem, yet they found nothing to be wrong. Therefore, no attempts to were made to repair the problem. This isn't a problem in which they can try to simulate after 5 minutes of driving. I feel that if this problem remains, it will be increasingly difficult to drive and is decreasing the chances of driving safely. The car's second winter is coming and I do not feel safe driving my car with this particular problem. . Read more...
There were no warning signs. The beginning of June I was driving and the car stalled in the middle of the street. The check engine light did not come on until the next day. I contacted the dealer (Honda International) west roxbury,MA and I was told that my transmission was only covered under the basic 3yr warranty. I am no longer covered under the 3 yr. Warranty because I am over the mileage. Nothing has been done so far to correct the problem. I took my car to two mechanics and I was told that my transmission should be covered longer than 3 yrs and my transmission should be good up until at least 150,000. Before needing service if required.
The contact stated vehicle stalled intermittently when the vehicle was placed in neutral. When it stalled the vehicle lost power steering and power brakes. This could have resulted in an accident. The dealership and the manufacturer have been contacted. Technical service bulletin 02-083 was issued for the problem but the dealer requested a diagnostic test at the contact's expense before they would use the technical service bulletin to fix the problem . Updated 1/11/2006. This problem occurred mostly at low altitudes in the summer with the a/c on. The consumer believes the loss of power steering and brakes when in neutral in dangerous and he thinks the vehicle should be recalled.
1) purchased the car 2) within the one year that I have owned the car, I have experienced gears grinding when shifting from 1st to 2nd with the manual transmission on numerous occasions. I do not think it is a problem with my technique as I have owned manual transmission cars for approximately 18 years and and never previously had a similar problem. 3) nothing done as of yet to correct the problem.
