1 Software problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2015

I was in the fifth hour of a six hour long road trip (warm day, a/c on, iphone plugged into console for an audio book), when I hit stop and go traffic. Shortly after the stop and go traffic began, my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid stopped being able to accelerate. Traffic ahead of me would move, my car would not respond normally, but only very, very slowly gather speed -- very tricky and dangerous when the traffic is stop and go. This is the third time this car has done this, twice in the same situation (long car drive, warm/hot day, very bad stop and go traffic, additional electrical use, a/c on and dvd's or something plugged in. ) when you are on the freeway, crossing a bridge -- as I was in both cases (golden gate bridge on memorial day and bay bridge yesterday, start of spring break) -- it is scary and dangerous to not have your car respond or be able to move / accelerate. Yesterday, to see if it would help, I took a chance and turned the engine on and off again, in the middle of 7 lanes of stopped bridge traffic, and the car began accelerating fairly normally, well enough to get over the bridge. Second time, a few months ago, my car simply wouldn't budge on the steep hill I drive up every day after a car came to a full stop in front of us, my Honda could barely get up the hill, then wouldn't accelerate normally on the flat block to my house, when I had my car towed to Honda next day, they said there was no problem. After the first memorial day bridge incident they said my car needed a software update, which they said they provided, and that the problem would never happen again, but it has happened twice since now. I only have 42,000 miles on my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. When I talk to the Honda dealer/mechanic they say they have never heard of a similar case to this.

2 Software problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

After having the ima battery replaced on my 2007 Civic Hybrid and getting the software updated, my car has no acceleration and is dangerous to drive. I have driven the car for almost 6 years with no acceleration issues and now the engine revs very high in order to provide even limited acceleration power. I have been told by my dealer that the car checks out fine and after calling Honda was told they did not know anything about this, when there are thousands of posts online about people having problems with the ima batteries after the software update. Others have mentioned they received similar responses from Honda when reporting such issues, so something is clearly not right here.

3 Software problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2012

The hybrid battery and charging system is not working properly. It is constantly fluctuating. This is after the various software updates. I have also seen a significant drop in mpg by more than 20% this is since the software updates and the ima system not working correctly. I have reviewed the 49 other complaints showing in the NHTSA system and all but 3 refer to the same or similar problems which I'm encountering. The other interesting fact is that unless the ima light comes on Honda appears to be refusing to take action. It is curious that in a number of the cases the light came on Honda did their software update and then the light doesn't seem to come on any longer even though individuals continue to report the same issues, just no light, coincidence I think not, its amazing what a few tweaks in software code can accomplish to reduce Honda's liability an keep the ima system light from coming on. It is my hope that someone at NHTSA will actually read these complaints and follow up. It is also my hope that something will get done by NHTSA before all of our warranties of 8 years or 80,000 miles expire and Honda says that a replace battery is our cost not theirs because they were able to drag this out. They have designed a bad system and they are taking actions to avoid having to do anything about it!!!!!!!!!.

4 Software problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2012

The Honda Civic Hybrid 2007 is suddenly unable to accelerate appropriately. This fault is most dangerous when accelerating to start going after red lights and stop signs, especially on hills. It is also noticeable when accelerating to merge into traffic, the acceleration performance of the Honda Civic Hybrid declined precipitously and dangerously immediately after Honda required replacement of the ima battery and concurrent new software (at the Honda dealer) in March.

5 Software problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2012

Had ima failure (2009) where vehicle wouldn't exceed 20 mph. Parked vehicle, required jumpstart & but was towed home ~25 miles. Jumped car again w/ no ima; drove 2 los gatos Honda. Ima trouble fixed; explanation not specific. Unbeknownst 2 me, other drivers had same trouble & Honda was (hearsay) aware of it. Never received recall notice 4 driver window (fixed same visit) or recall 4 rear susp. (found out about 3-yr old recall by a blog back in February 2012). Honda performed battery "fix" that was 2 make car better, it hasn't. Car has refused 2 auto-stop & has gas engine power (significantly < the gas only hc) only 4 many months as charging/discharging of ima battery has been erratic. Every day state-of-charge (soc) goes 2 two bars w/in a 1/2mile = no auto-stop or ima assist getting on2 freeway. After 3-4miles, ima back 2 7-8 bars & will be back down 2 < 4 bars & no ima assist again once or twice more on remainder of drive home. This never happened pre "fix", never! have 2 teenagers who drive car on occasion & also my wife & 8 & 3 year old children who ride in car also. W/o ample power, can b hazrdous 4 these drivers & passengers. Car isn't as reliable & efficient as prior 2 "fix". I'm worried I have 2 wait 4 a total failure 2 have it replaced. That's the ultimate danger! Honda won't return car 2 pre "fix" condition, said a permanent software fix. No passing power in middle of commute (30 miles each way) can b disconcerting. "fix" made car unsafe depending on battery soc & should have r2'd battery pack not do workaround leaving potential 4 mishap or worse. Reading about class action that Honda made me aware of, I'm not alone in this concern & Honda shouldn't b allowed 2 state car is safe bcuz they're aware their "fix" was a band-aid 2 get owner out of warranty period. Honda is refusing 2 replace battery until there is a complete, absolute failure. That's not safe!.

6 Software problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2011

Original owner. After ima battery software upgrade owner now experiences random loss of battery power level. Battery indicator randomly falls to 1 bar and during this time, sluggish to poor acceleration, especially in highway merge situations placing owner is dangerous situations. When battery charged at least 50%, acceleration is acceptable as the ima assist in acceleration.

7 Software problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2011

There is a potential for the voltage converter that relays power from the integrated motor assist (ima) system to the vehicle's electrical components to fail. . A cvt doesn't actually have gears, so the system uses electronics to direct the transmission to up- or downshift in specific ways when a driver hits a paddle. Battery loses charge suddenly and power is significantly lost to the point where acceleration is not possible. This has created several unsafe driving condition in highway and expressway entrances, as I can not get in safely or maintain safe speed during driving. This incident has repeated many times in the past three years. Battery indicator drops to zero bar or one bar and power is lost significantly. Sluggish to poor acceleration, especially in highway merge situations placing owner is dangerous situations. When battery charged at least 50%, acceleration is acceptable as the ima assist in acceleration. The vehicle's hybrid ima system (integrated motor assist) has been steadily deteriorating the hybrid battery system must recharge so frequently that battery assist is available less than half the time. When assist is unavailable, acceleration is dangerously low, making common driving situations such as left turns, freeway onramps, and merging into traffic unpredictable and quite hazardous. Honda's only response has been a series of ineffective software updates. Honda will not replace the battery under warranty unless a warning light appears. Yet even the current severely degraded performance of the battery does not trigger that warning light. I have been in several near miss situations when acceleration was so sluggish that I was nearly unable to evade a dangerous traffic situation.

8 Software problem

9 Software problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

On my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid the ima battery will suddenly drop from a charge to no charge. When this happens the car loses almost all acceleration power because the gasoline engine is forced to charge the battery up. This has happened to me during acceleration onto major highways during rush hour which is extremely dangerous without acceleration power. I would like Honda motor to address this issue instead of issuing software recalls that do nothing to the car.

10 Software problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

Honda Civic Hybrid ima no assist or lack of assist and mileage reduction after ima software recall update. I had no issues prior to the ima recall software update performed at the dealer. The car seems to now use less electric motor power to accelerate or to go up hills. This can become dangerous in certain situations. Also the car has seen a decrease in fuel economy of 16% city and 24% highway. Contacted 2 different Honda dealerships and they both said some people have the same issues but Honda does not have a solution for them. Called Honda motor corp. Directly to try to get warranty fix or at least for them to uninstall the ima sw update and they said they cannot do that. They will not replace my battery which is still under the 8 year warranty or resolve my sw update issues. It seems with so many people having an issue someone like the government should step in and force Honda to rectify the issues for free rather than having people waste their time going to small claims court or filing a class action suit.

11 Software problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact received notification from the dealer to bring his vehicle in for servicing where they performed an ima service upgrade. After the servicing, the contact stated the electric motor assist did not work. Both the dealer and manufacture were contacted who informed the contact that the software upgrade could not be undone. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 59,000. The failure mileages was approximately 56,000.

12 Software problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

The ima battery pack in my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid failed at 68,000 miles. Prior to the failure, on one occasion the engine shut down at a stop sign and had to be restarted. The battery failure occurred while my wife was driving the car on a freeway and the failure resulted in a considerable drop in power, but the car continued to run on the gasoline engine alone. Honda previously installed a software update in the vehicle apparently to address battery issues. Honda is replacing the battery pack under warranty.

13 Software problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2010

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. Consumer states problems with vehicle battery the consumer stated she received a letter from Honda motor corp. To visit her dealer for a software update to prevent premature deterioration on the ima battery. The consumer stated she was getting poor gas mileage. She then noticed the vehicle's performance was extremely sluggish. Every time she started the vehicle and began driving, the gauge that displayed the ima battery's charge dropped to one bar and there was absolutely no assist from the ima system upon acceleration, which was the process of the battery recalibrating and trying to evaluate if there was enough charge available to assist the internal combustion engine, which could leave the vehicle dangerously under-powered when merging into interstate traffic. The consumer also stated she had difficulty turning left at a busy intersection due to lack of acceleration. The vehicle almost never shut off with the auto-stop feature due to low charge of the ima battery.

14 Software problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2010

The car became unsafe to drive following Honda's software update 10-034. All owners were asked to have the update performed to prevent hybrid pack deterioration. The letter listed multiple situations in which hybrid assist and braking will be reduced. As a result of the update the car has markedly reduced assist, and at unpredictable times no assist whatsoever. At least once a day, at a random time, battery soc drops to 2 bars, all assist is disabled and then the so-called recalibration is performed where the car fully charges the battery to 5 bars, then jumps to full 8 . On average that last about 8-10 minutes as documented in multiple youtube videos on the subject. During all that time no assist is available, and additional gas engine power is being used to charge the pack. The gas mileage suffers as well as I am driving at 3-4k rpm instead of the usual 1-2k. . I've experienced multiple situations where such a drop happens when trying to merge on an uphill highway with vehicles behind me almost rear-ending me while I am flooring the gas pedal. I've had that happen before left turn when after a quick glance on the gauge and seeing it full, I'd start turning only to see the pack drop and the car slow down significantly. A related problem is reduced/unpredictable braking. When the battery is cold and the car idles higher than usually, all regenerative braking is disabled and it takes a significant effort from the driver to stop the car. Multiple complaints to the dealer were met with "operating as designed" and "the update does reduce the power". Lately, I've been simply referred to become a party of class action suit against Honda, as the dealership is unable to help with anything listed in that suit. As a summary, the car has unpredictable losses of braking and acceleration and a markedly reduced mileage which undoubtedly violates epa rules.

15 Software problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2010

My wife owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. I had the software update done on my car in 2010. Since the update, the car has not idled when I bring the car to a stop, instead it moves little further, and there is that danger of hitting the car in front of me. Also, once the vehicle comes to a stop, and I start moving again, the car goes backwards a little. If the car behind me is very close to my rear bumper, this Honda Civic Hybrid car would actually hit the car in the back.

16 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2010

I had the software updated in my 07 Civic Hybrid in August 2010. Since the update the car has no electric assist when the battery is half full or less. My battery is in this state at least half of the time and Honda tells me that it is normal and that the lack of power when accelerating is the result of the update. This has made the car feel very unsafe to drive, especially when pulling onto the highway. I was almost rear ended the last week in August pulling on the highway because my car had no pickup as a result of this update.

17 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

We own a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. We strongly believe this car is unsafe. In 2010 we brought the car into a Honda dealer after the ima light came on. Instead of replacing a bad hybrid battery, the dealer instead "upgraded" the ima software. As a result, the car has lost mileage. But far more importantly, it has lost any acceleration. The software doesn't use the ima (electric booster motor) in a manner that provides any acceleration to the car. In fact, as best as we can tell, the ima (integrated motor assist) is mostly turned off. So we have a smaller combustion engine than the conventional Honda civic doing the work of what should be two engines. The primary and booster. We constantly have a difficult time in gaining freeway speed to properly merge onto the highway. This is impossible if the on ramp is on a hill or incline. We have had several close calls and near accidents. As a result we firmly believe this car is un-safe. We urge you to open up a safety investigation into the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. If these hybrid batteries were replaced, as they should have been under warranty, this car would not have a safety acceleration problem. Honda refuses to do so. We need your help. Sincerely,.

18 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact stated while sitting at a complete stop, the vehicle felt as though it was going to stall. The manufacturer was informed about the failure. The vehicle taken into the dealer for a software update recall , and afterwards the vehicle was not performing like it was previously. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 28000 and the current mileage was 29000.

19 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

I received a letter from american Honda corp. Stating that I needed to get a software update on my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid ima battery. I took the car to my local dealer and since the update has been installed the car is dangerous to drive when entering the freeway. The failure to accelerate happens everytime I enter the freeway. The consequences of this failure is that cars behind come up on me very fast and I have no power to get in the flow of traffic. It has little acceleration to match traffic flow. It seems the car is mostly operating on the small engine and has little assist from the battery, since the update has been installed. I called american Honda they said there was no problem with the update on the performance of the car and they would not do anything regarding my concerns. I feel this car is an accident waiting to happen. As well ,Honda said they will not change the warranty on the battery even though they have changed how the battery operates since they have installed the update. I ask you to consider telling Honda to recall this car and make it safe to drive. I want my car to run the way it did before the software was installed. A side complaint is that the good gas mileage I got on a tank of gas as dropped considerably since the update. . Thank you for your consideration on taking on this complaint. . P. S. There has been no accident. I filed this complaint so that there is none in the future. The incident date of August 11,2010 is the date the new software was installed in my car.

20 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

I have a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. I have noticed that the battery is suddenly drained of its charge during hot weather when I am at a stop. This caused me to pull out into traffic with literally no acceleration. This has led me to almost being called by oncoming traffic on a couple different occasions. I know Honda is aware of this happening as they have sent out a notice to have the battery software updated saying that the battery is being drained and deteriorating over time. I think that they know that this is a major safety issue and they are not admitting it. Honda has to be held responsible to provide a fix for this situation before someone gets killed if they haven't already.

21 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

Honda asked me to apply the Civic Hybrid battery pack software upgrade patch sometime end of 2010. After applying the patch the mileage on the car went down from 45-49mpg to 35-40mpg and also reduced acceleration from a red light or stop sign - car just drags to get accelerated. Complained to Honda dealer many times and they keep telling me its the way im driving and nothing wrong with the car. I have also joined the Honda Civic Hybrid class action lawsuit. This is absolutely un-acceptable to give false information to the customer while selling the product and I feel cheated.

22 Software problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

The vehicle's hybrid ima system (integrated motor assist) has been steadily deteriorating since approximately 40000 miles, but became hazardous at around 63000. Current mileage is 78500. The hybrid battery system must recharge so frequently that battery assist is available less than half the time. I have been in several "near miss" situations when acceleration was so sluggish that I was nearly unable to evade a dangerous traffic situation.

23 Software problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2010

I was almost in a serious accident as I went to make a right hand turn, and the car only accelerated at about 1/4 of its normal pace. I had to look down to make sure my foot was on the gas. When this acceleration failure occurred, the battery showed no charge, but it had shown almost a full charge when I first started the car, just a few minutes earlier. My car now cannot hold a charge at all. I park it fully charged, and when I start, it shows fully charged. Within the first mile of driving, it drops to 1 or no bars. It then has trouble accelerating, as the car cannot pull from the ima and it tries to charge the ima, instead of accelerating. This failure is now occurring daily. It is very difficult to drive to work, as I don't know when I can merge onto interstate and if the car will fail. It is usually fine after about 10 miles of driving, but my commute is only 12 miles, so I would say this makes a very large % of my commute dangerous. The service department updated software, but this has not improved the situation at all. I am keeping a journal of these daily activities, as the ima is still under warranty. My gas mileage dropped 20% over the past year, even though I do use ethanol free gas. This was the first indication there was a problem with the ima, but Honda simply gave me the brush off everytime I expressed a concern that this was an early sign that something was wrong.

24 Software problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph entering the highway from an on ramp when the engine began to lose power and the vehicle would not accelerate. The vehicle decelerated to 10 mph. The failure would occur intermittently. The manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for the replacement of the hybrid battery and reprogramming of the battery software. The contact stated that after the repair was performed, the failure recurred. The contact requested the original software to be installed in the vehicle however, neither the manufacturer nor the dealer would assist. The failure mileage was 60,000.

25 Software problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid lost electric motor assist power in may 2010 when I was driving up a hill in downtown seattle traffic. Took it to Honda dealer, who confirmed low power assist and (without conferring with me) reprogrammed the power assist software and pronounced it fixed. One or two days after this service call, I again noticed weak electric motor assist on another hill in downtown traffic. Took the car to Honda again, and they confirmed that they could replicate the anemic power condition, but said that Honda USA says the vehicle is operating as intended with the computer software update, and that there is no more to be done. I said that I had lost confidence in the automobile, since I consider it a driving hazard not to be able to accelerate adequately in some driving conditions. I said that I wanted Honda to buy back the car, but the dealer service manager said that Honda wouldn't do that. I have purchased another car, but still own the Honda Civic Hybrid; I don't know what to do with it, since I don't feel good offering it to anyone other than Honda for sale.

26 Software problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

Honda Civic Hybrid 2007 has worse mpg (28mpg on average) than its non-hybrid twin or other comparable models, after the new software for integrated motor assist was installed by Honda dealership. When I bought the car it was marked with 45mpg average. My battery seems to have been damaged as it does not hold charge.

27 Software problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact stated that he had an ima battery in the vehicle that would not charge in hot weather. The vehicle also began to accelerate without warning. The dealer was contacted and stated that they have been updating the software in the vehicle. The manufacturer stated that there was nothing wrong with the battery. There have been no repairs just software updates. The VIN is not available. The failure mileage was 43000 and the current mileage is 45500. Updated 10/21/10. Updated 10/26/10.

28 Software problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

This is regarding a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. The ima system/electric battery is not working as it used to. Recently there was a service bulletin issued by Honda to have the ima software updated at any Honda dealership. The service bulletin dealt with the issue of the electric battery not charging properly and no/minimal assist from the ima system when accelerating. There is no change in how the car is performing after the software update and the mpg has gone down from 42 to 32 mpg. The electric battery is not charging as it used to initially and there is hardly any assist when accelerating. My wife and I have almost gotten into really bad accidents when trying to merge on the freeway. Without any assistance from the electric battery, the car has literally no acceleration. On a few occasions we were almost run over by semi's because we couldn't merge with the traffic fast enough. I've reported this issue to multiple dealerships in bay area CA but they insisted there is no problem with the hybrid batteries. They state that if there is a problem then a warning light should come up on the dashboard indicating the problem. I don't know why the light is not coming on but I proved to multiple dealers that the battery charge does not hold. They saw how the car was behaving but said they were not able to do anything till the vehicle's onboard computer indicated that there was an issue with the ima system. I then contacted Honda USA and reported the issue. They were polite but declined any help. They also said that the car has an onboard computer that displays an error if there is an issue. I told them that this problem can cause fatal accidents on the highway because the car does not have any power and it is not fit to be driven on the highway but Honda USA said that they were not aware of any such issue. I strongly feel that they are aware of the issue and even tried to correct it via the latest software update but it didn't work and they're not willing to replace the battery.

29 Software problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. While driving approximately 5 mph uphill, the vehicle became resistant to acceleration attempts with no illumination of the battery warning symbol. The failure usually occurred when driving uphill and had been experienced at least ten times intermittently. The contact stated she received a software update notification letter from the manufacturer but did not have the updates performed. The dealer was contacted and the service manager informed the contact that the update could hurt the fuel mileage significantly. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. Updated 05/04/11.

30 Software problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid has issues with the brakes and power. The consumer stated the brakes were not braking properly. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer to have the brakes inspected, but after inspecting the brakes and road testing, they stated the vehicle was performing normal. The consumer continued to have braking issues, and after almost having a collision due to decreased braking ability, she again contacted the dealer. They tested the brakes again, and found no problem. The brakes continued to fail about once a week. The dealer evaluated the vehicle. The dealer stated a report from Honda stated the ima will stop charging and stop with assisted braking if temperatures are too high and that it is normal for the customer to feel a difference in braking without regeneration. Honda advised that the consumer drive with the windows down and when she parked the vehicle to leave them down as well to help cool off the hybrid batteries which were located behind the seat. The dealer contacted the consumer because they wanted to perform a computer upgrade on her vehicle. The report also stated updated ima control unit and battery software. The consumer drove for several weeks and noted some improvement with the braking issue, but now the ima batteries will not stay charged, and if the battery level goes below 4 bars, which is 1/2 of full bars or a completely charged battery, the vehicle's power is greatly decreased to the point of having to travel at speeds of 15-20 mph for 15 seconds after being stopped at a red light.

31 Software problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. While driving approximately 35 mph merging on the interstate he engaged the accelerator pedal and suddenly the acceleration stopped. He also applied extreme pressure to the accelerator pedal but it felt like the acceleration did not increase. The rpms increased; however, the hybrid system was of no assistance. Before he merged onto the interstate he observed the battery pack had five bars. When he felt the acceleration stop, the power gauge dropped from 5 bars to 1 bar rapidly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer five times for the failure. The dealer has performed two software updates on the vehicle. The failure had occurred 6 times since the last software update. The dealer advised him that Honda was aware of the failure but does not have a fix and have refused to look at the vehicle. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 64,610.

32 Software problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2008

Contact owns a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact stated while driving up a hill, the vehicle began to hesitate and the rpms increased. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 60,000. The consumer stated the issue involves lack of power and acceleration. Which was caused by a software update issued by Honda. Honda is having an issue with the batteries dying prematurely. The update that was installed turned off the assisting electric motor to save the battery. Thus, resulting in lower miles per gallon and the lack of power and acceleration.

33 Software problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2007

I purchased a new 07 Honda civ hybrid and from the start never got close to the mpg as advertised. I had the car looked at by Honda dealer multiple times and they very found anything wrong and would comment that car was within spec. 21/2 years later and in the summer I experienced when the I was in heavy traffic and high temperature with all electrical options on ac,nav, radio, etc. The hybrid battery would drain and not keep charge and the car would operate sluggish, no power, no acceleration and basically unsafe to drive. Th car drove that it had run out of gas. I experienced this 3x in 2 weeks as I was exploring and documenting the symptoms. I took it back to the dealer and it was the time of the software update. They updated the software and they would not replace the batteries even though we indirectly agreed (dealer mechanic did but not Honda corporate. . Since they declined to replace battery) over time that the battery had degraded due to design flaw. After the software update the car driving characteristics changes. Engine idles at higher rmp (higher keeps the battery better charged), the power to pass a vehicle on the highway (my wife would press on the accelerator to pass a car on the highway and the car did not respond almost causing accidents). Considers it unsafe and refuses to drive it and put kids in it. I had DE aler look a it for a few days working with the Honda technical team. Final assessment was did not find anything wrong and it is driving within spec. How can that be?the car no longer has power, cannot dependently pass or overcome a car on the highway in normal driving speeds and when you stress it traffic on a hot day and run the normal equipment ac the car feels like it is running out of gas and the hybrid batteries are not charging and are not operating the car as you would expect a car to operate. The software update made the car worst. The car is unsafe!.

34 Software problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2007

The Honda Civic Hybrid ima system has been inconsistent and a worry since I bought the car. The charge level varies wildly within minutes, releasing the braking charge mode unexpectedly while traveling downhill, resulting in rapid acceleration. While going uphill the ima system suddenly shows no charge and the engine is unable to keep the car's speed constant, resulting in rapid deceleration. The software update that was said to fix these problems resulting in no change to the problems but a considerable reduction in mpg. The engine refuses to stop at red lights and instead remains at idle - wasting gas. I have service records covering the entire history of this car which documents my concerns and complaints. The Honda service department was never able to find any problems with the ima. I continue to drive this car but am concerned for my safety and the car's reliability. Anything you can do to help identify and remedy the ima problem will be greatly appreciated.
