1 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/11/2011

My 2004 transmission went out in a turn through a non stop light controlled intersection. I was almost broadsided by an upcoming car, that would have missed me if the transmission didn't fail. I found a safety recall for the same model year that was put out while my car was in the dealer's possession. I am being told that it is my problem, and unless I cough up $8,000 to replace it with a new transmission I am screwed. For a rebuilt transmission the cost would be $2,000, but it is only guaranteed for 1 year. On top of all this Honda won't release the patents so that you can buy the parts needed to fix it on your own. Sounds a lot like fraud to me! why wont NHTSA force Honda to do the right thing and recall these vehicles? does someone really have to be killed, maimed or injured to make companies repair faulty vehicles?.

3 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/14/2011

Drive belt in my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid broke all of sudden with no warning while driving. Could have been very dangerous if I was traveling at a high speed. Luckliy was travelling at very low speed. Vehicle has always been serviced at Honda dealership and is up to date, they have no explaination how this occured and Honda is not willing to help fix the issue, I have been told new cvt transmission is needed. They had extended the warranty because so many complaints received, but mine expired 11 months ago. Honda should have done a recall with this issue! it is a safety hazard and they are sweeping it under the rug and wont correct their faulty cvt transmissions.

4 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact was attempting to accelerate from a traffic stop but the vehicle was unresponsive. There was an abnormal burning odor coming from the vehicle and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that they were aware of the failure but there was no repair available. The technician burnished the start clutch and replaced the transmission fluid. The contact continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 44,000.

5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

The transmission suddenly fails every 30-40k miles creating a traffic hazard that will result in a crash without warning. Also, the ima battery does not hold a sufficient charge creating a loss in power and a possible accident.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/26/2010

Since my 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid received the battery system software upgrade in late 2010, the car has had greatly reduced available power and acceleration. The fuel efficiency has reduced by ~10 mpg, which is infuriating, but there is a larger safety issue because of the limited battery power available for acceleration. Intermittently, but repeatedly, when accelerating, especially from a stop to turn left through a gap in traffic or to merge on a freeway from the entrance ramp, a dangerous situation has occurred because the engine-battery combination does not supply adequate power and acceleration. I was nearly side-swiped the first time after the battery update when I was caught by surprise at the utter lack of power as I tried to turn into traffic. My Honda dealership has been unresponsive my complaints and requests to revert the software to the old version, with which my car worked fine.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/18/2010

My 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid has 65k plus miles. The problem began with a slight hesitation upon accelerating from a stop. I chalked it up to minor wear. The hesitation has gotten progressively worse. Now it shudders (or 'judders' as I've heard it called) on a regular basis;the severity and duration have increased. It has gotten to the point where I don't feel safe pulling out into traffic without more room between cars than I've typically needed.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

2004 Honda Civic Hybrid, the transmission is shot. I've already replaced the starter kit, the cv and some other stuff. Now, at 113,000 the transmission is whining and juttering. This car is a lemon. I hear that Honda had a recall on the hybrid transmission in japan, so they should have one here, too.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid lost electric motor assist power in may 2010 when I was driving up a hill in downtown seattle traffic. Took it to Honda dealer, who confirmed low power assist and (without conferring with me) reprogrammed the power assist software and pronounced it fixed. One or two days after this service call, I again noticed weak electric motor assist on another hill in downtown traffic. Took the car to Honda again, and they confirmed that they could replicate the anemic power condition, but said that Honda USA says the vehicle is operating as intended with the computer software update, and that there is no more to be done. I said that I had lost confidence in the automobile, since I consider it a driving hazard not to be able to accelerate adequately in some driving conditions. I said that I wanted Honda to buy back the car, but the dealer service manager said that Honda wouldn't do that. I have purchased another car, but still own the Honda Civic Hybrid; I don't know what to do with it, since I don't feel good offering it to anyone other than Honda for sale.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

2003 Honda Civic Hybrid purchased at 66,000 miles at 90,359 miles slight shutter/judder when moving from a complete stop. Honda diagnosed (04/08)cvt for judder. Added one start clutch burnishing procedure/add two start clutch burnishing as a recall service. Now same problem again. Now at 120,000 miles experiencing same problem vehicle slips, shudders on take off from full stop. Repair will be $1200 to replace start clutch. When starting from a dead stop I hope the vehicle will move. I have to really press down on the gas petal to get the vehicle going and I do think this is a safety hazard with my vehicle. Had the egr valve changed at $400 repair(0708).

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

Vehicle is lossing power on acceleration at random moments.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/07/2010

We have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid that we would like to report a defect on. When the vehicle is shifted to either drive or reverse, the vehicle would suddenly lurch even though the foot is on the brake pedal. A few times where my wife was driving the vehicle she didn't exert enough force on the brake pedal and caused for the vehicle to move even though it was not intended. Luckily the only incident have been minor with regards to the bumper hitting the wall or another vehicle. We believe this issue needs to be fix especially in the event that the vehicle is parked in a steep slope that will cause the vehicle to accelerate and potentially cause a major accident.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/24/2009

I have a 2004 Honda hybrid that I bought new from an atlanta, GA dealership. It has 106000 miles. It has had 1 transmission replaced, motor mounts, clutch and the same problems still exist. It slips, shakes like it is going to explode even though I take off gently and slowly. I was at a redlight 12-24-09 when I attempted to turn onto i75 and it "slipped" so badly it wouldn't even go. The car behind me barely missed slamming into me. Before this daily it is slipping on hills, revving unexplainable and creaking as if it is going to fall apart. I have had it regularly maintained at the cleveland TN dealership where I live. Now I am out of warranty and cannot afford to take it in. It just had the clutch and motor mounts replaced 2 weeks ago!. . I am a hospice rn and drive my car many miles. I am afraid I am going to kill someone because of the danger of the slipping, ect.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

Going up steep hill behind traffic going 10 to15 mph. The car just lacks power and rolls back. Almost hit car behind. Had to roll down hill. It has happened 3 times and the dealer says nothing is wrong.

The transmission in my Honda Civic Hybrid 2003 slips when the car is going slow or on an incline.

17 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

My 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid on one occasion when starting out in the morning accelerated faster than I wanted to go, to about 25-30 instead of 15 mph in our condo area. It was very brief, and has never been repeated. After the Toyota problems recently, I went to my Honda service center, and they assured me that there are no problems with Honda acceleration. Thank you.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/02/2009

There is a known problem with Honda Civic Hybrid cvt transmission: "a shudder or judder up to 15 mph requires Honda to drain and burnish the 2003-2005 Honda hybrid cvt clutch. Honda will check the egr valve during this service too. Honda tech article# ats06070" my 2003 civic is having this problem, which is unsafe because the transmission stutters to engage when starting out from a stop, which can be dangerous if you need to get going quickly to get out of the way.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/24/2009

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/20/2009

I feel a big jerk when decelerate my car from 70miles/hour with my foot off the gas pedal. There has been no accident but I feel that if the car breaks down as a result of this jerk or if the jerk is strong enough, then I may run into some accident. The problem is intermittent. I took the care to Honda dealer, but the problem didn't happen during test drive. A lot of people are having the same issue with this model. It looks like a manufacturing defect. Car detail: Honda Civic Hybrid 2003. It's an ongoing problem.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/08/2009

Honda recall for judder in cvt on 2005 hybrid. Repaired (I believe by burnishing the clutch?); however, condition is recurring, gradually getting worse. I have heard many other complaints of the same problem in other cvts. My sons recently had the same repair done to his.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/22/2009

2003 Honda Civic Hybrid. Original owner car has 52 k. Recently I experienced a near death accident because the engine rapidly accelerated by itself as I exited a slight uphill driveway. As I approached the end of the driveway I stopped before turning onto the road, I heard a thud or clunk and then the car lurched and sped rapidly into the road which was wet from rain. The car skidded and fishtailed l tried to apply the brakes but they were unresponsive. I tried the emergency brake which did not respond either. The car did a 360 turn and had gone almost 200 yards from where it exited the driveway. The engine sounded like it was going to blow up. I could smell smoke. All of this happened in under 30 seconds. By some merciful force, the car hit the mud embankment on the side of the road and thankfully no other cars were on the road. I jumped out of the car because the engine was still racing and I could not turn it off, I ran across the road because I wasn't sure if the car would blow up or keep going. After a few seconds I ran over again and could turn it off but the emergency lights did not work . The car was towed to the oakland, CA Honda dealer where I purchased it. They performed a basic diagnostic test and told me the car is ok to drive and nothing is visibly wrong with it except for the dent on the front bumper. They have closed the case. In the past this car has been serviced several times for a recall due to a problem with the cvt (continuously variable transmission) because it judders after coming to a stop. I do not believe that Honda has adequately researched my case. A car should not accelerate as mine did and I believe that the fact this model has already had a recall on the transmission warrants a more than cursory evaluation. Honda is risking the safety of hundreds and thousands of peoples safety by not trying to determine why my vehicle sped out of control by itself. I plan to investigate further in thanks that I am alive.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/18/2009

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/16/2008

While going to my drs. Home in tildon park, in berkeley, to get to tildon park, there is a series of 3 hills with stop signs at the top of each. After stopping at the second stop sign, when I pressed on the accelerator, the car would not move, after I let the car roll back and I parked on the curb for 5 minutes with the car idling, finally the car finished going up the third hill and I made it to the drs. House, from the drs house I called the Honda dealership and informed them of this problem, plus, when I got to the drs house, there was a smell, like a slipping clutch or hot brakes, I also told Honda of this, they made me a appointment for the next day. When I arrived at the dealership, I was approached by a serviceman and he asked me,,what was I bringing the car in for?. . . I told him about the trans not working correctly, I was told. . Take the car home, we don't know how to fix that yet. When I got home, I called american Honda and I was told. . Take the car back to the dealership, so a hour later the car was back at the dealership. I told the serviceman exactly where I was when this problem happened, he said he was going to have a driver go up those hills and see if the car will duplicate the problem. I left the car at the dealership for two days. Finally I called and was told. . They couldn't get the problem to duplicate itself. When to the dealership, I asked. . Did you go up to tildon park?. . I was told yes. Two days later I had to go up those same hills again. . And again>. The car wouldn't move at the second hill. , so the dealership lied to me and again I called the dealership and again I was told. . They don't know how to fix it. They think. . . That at low rpm the battery which runs the tranny does not charge. I've received one phone call from someone at american Honda asking me for a opinion, and. . He got a earful. But to this day, I have not been contacted about this problem, I don't drive it very much anymore. . ,. I drive my other Honda which is 100% dependable.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/05/2008

My 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid has a shudders on start-up from a stop. Was told that changing the cvt fluid twice fixes the problem and that Honda has posted a technical bulletin about this issue. Other hch owners have stated that changing the cvt fluid is only a temporary fix and that it is really a faulty clutch problem. Why isn't Honda being held accountable to recall and fix this problem?.
