general problems of the 2009 Honda CR-V

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph in a parking lot the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration causing the driver to lose control of the steering and crashed into two vehicles and a building wall. During the incident the driver sustained a head injury which required medical treatment. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The failure mileage was 210,000.

On July 31, 2015, while exiting I-95 northbound crossing from the florida to georgia state line from high density high speed vacation traffic, my 2009 Honda Cr-v serpentine (drive) belt snapped. I immediately lost power steering and other functions associated with the drive serpentine belt. I was traveling at least 45 mph as I had just exited the highway; my knuckles were white I was grabbing the steering wheel so hard trying to assess, at high speed and with vehicles in front and behind me going the same speeds, how to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. My wife and two young girls were with me and I feared that me and my entire family were be seriously injured or killed. Subsequent inspection clearly identified a failed air-conditioning compressor clutch, that is the subject of Honda TSB 12-072 (service bulletin sb-10056005-7115), that my VIN is the subject of Honda's extended warranty associated with TSB 12-072. The compressor clutch caused the compressor to wind-up/damage the belt when it could not travel over the drive wheel of the compressor. The only warning we had, in hindsight, was we lost air conditioning earlier in our trip to florida and the ac was blowing warm air and there was a noise coming from the compressor area. My entire family was terrified by what happened here - this seems like a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety and should be a recall, not an extended warranty. I could have been killed. Had this happened on the highway 1 minute earlier, I could have been rear ended at high speed by car or, worse, truck. Given the numerous blog posts about this problem, and the Honda dealer service tech who said he said this is a common problem that can result in the drive belt getting destroyed by a failed ac compressor clutch, it seems that it should be a recall.

Exiting the small to moderate sized parking lot I was stopped at the red light. This is a t intersection where one must turn right or left. After the light turned green I slowly accelerated to turn left when the car accelerated immediately to about 50 mph while I was entering the intersection, I managed to to turn left. Despite vigorously braking, the car continued at what seemed like an incredible speed, it felt like an accelerating race car. I hit a truck and another car sideswiping them as I tried to swerve out of the way of traffic and parked cars. The car travelled approximately 1/5 of a mile before I was able to stop by putting the vehicle in park. The air bags deployed.

My mother was driving on the interstate when the vsa light (triangle with exclamation point in the middle) came on. She then started to hear a grinding noise from the tires. The light and the noise caused her to reduce her speed to about 55. She drove about 5 miles to the nearest pull-off ramp. She was able to slow down, but as she pulled into a parking spot, she depressed the brake pedal further to stop the car and the brake pedal would not go down and the vehicle would not stop. Subsequently, she rolled up on the sidewalk in front of the parking space and hit a light pole, which stopped the vehicle. She does not necessarily recall the engine revving or accelerating as other complainants have reported, but the brakes clearly did not work and there may have been some undetected acceleration as the car clearly needed enough speed to go over the curb. No airbags were deployed. The vehicle has less than 3500 miles. She has had no previous issues with braking. The vehicle requires body work due to the collision. Honda service department detected no mechanical problems. Clearly, there is an issue as a cursory search of complaints on the Cr-v show at least 2-3 complaints per year about the same issue. May be an issue with other Honda vehicles as well.

While stopping or stopped for traffic light(s), with foot on brake, engine revved up to 2k rpm without any action on my part. When light changed, and brake was released, acceleration and car performance became normal again. This has happened three separate times in the past six weeks. In addition, turning the a/c off or on had no effect on engine rpm. Note: during the anomaly, if transmission was moved from d to n, engine would rev up to 5k rpm, and would drop back to 2k rpm when transmission put back into d all this happened with foot still on the brake. For the record: car was taken to Honda dealer twice for this anomaly, the memory dumped, and no data found. Honda claims there is nothing wrong with the car.

The contact was unable to stop the acceleration by depressing the brake and instead, shut the engine off. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure and the vehicle was not repaired.
