While stopped at a traffic signal, the vehicle failed to restart when the light turned green. On another occasion, the vehicle stalled during operation and would not start. The engine would crank but there was no ignition. This created a safety risk because the vehicle was disabled in traffic and unable to move out of the roadway, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision or other crash. The vehicle was towed to a dealership for inspection. The dealer diagnosed a failed powertrain control module (pcm). The diagnosis indicated no spark and that the ignition coils were not receiving signal, although the crank sensor signal was present. The pcm was replaced, and the vehicle started and operated normally after replacement. No additional wiring, fuse, or grounding issues were identified. There were no prior warning lights, dashboard messages, or drivability symptoms before the failure occurred. The failure happened unexpectedly at approximately 52,889 miles. The replaced pcm is available through the servicing dealership if inspection is requested.

I was entering the highway when without warning, my car stopped moving. I hurriedly shifted into park so I would not drift into the highway, and thankfully I was able to safely drift into the exit lane. I tried to troubleshoot by turning the engine off and shifting into neutral to move the car out of the way, but it was completely undrivable. At 115,000 miles, this came as a shock to me, as I purchased my first Honda because of its reliable reputation. I had recently gotten my anti-theft system repaired, as well as a state inspection at a local Honda dealership, and there was no indication that there was a problem with the transmission. I researched the issue and accessed my service records, and I found that the problem was with the cvt transmission and that I was not alone. I pride myself on the regular maintenance of my vehicles and keep meticulous records, and while I waited on the diagnosis, I found the records on the steps taken to address this problem: -notification from Honda about the extended warranty (10 years, 150k miles) in 2021 -software update was performed on July 22nd, 2021 to update the pcm software to warn of premature cvt belt deterioration. From the service bulletin 21-046, “dtc p271e is added so at the early stages of a cvt primary belt failure, the d light will flash, the mil will come on, and engine power output will be reduced. This will lessen the chances of an unexpected, sudden loss of acceleration and allow the customer an opportunity to get the vehicle to a Honda dealer”. The service tech told me the cvt belt had snapped, destroying the transmission, just as the service bulletin had forewarned. During this incident, there was no indication that my transmission was going bad - no mil light, no flashing d light, no slippage, no reduction of engine power, or verbal warning when my car was serviced last. The software update that was intended to warn me of this very occurrence failed miserably.

I have only had this vehicle for a few months. At that time I was not informed of a recall on this vehicle. The transmission gave out because there was confirmed contaminants on the end of the oil pan drain plug. That the Honda dealership confirmed themselves. With the findings the extinction should apply to my vehicle however they are denying my claim. This was the recall due to the possibility of early deterioration of the continuous variable transmission (cvt) drive belt, american Honda is extending the warranty coverage on these cvt models to 7 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the pcm software was previously updated in service bulletin 21-046, product update: 2016-20 Hr-v software update and cvt inspection, the warranty extension applies, since the cvt primary drive belt is now a obd-monitored part due to the addition of dtc p271e.

7/on a highway, the car lost speed, and all warning lights on the dashboard started flashing. The car would not change gears, decided to place it to the side of the road and tow it to westshore Honda. The start button was replaced, and there was no charge due to a recall that covered the fees. No other urgent action required my attention, and I left. Was about 15-20 minutes after leaving, while on a busy highway plus it was raining, the same issue happened. It was terrifying to lose the power speed. I drove home safely using offside roads and flashing emergency lights at less than 40 miles. On 7/13-14, I was able to book time at lakeland's regal Honda to have my car checked once again. No one called me back until the following day. Regal Honda gave an estimate of over 7000. No explanation on what the issue was, just that my transmission needed to be replaced. My car is about 65000 miles and just passed the 5-year mark, so I do not have a warranty. The car is only used on the weekends and I have done all the service needed since I bought it, I've been the only owner. I expressed my shock that a car with this many miles is having issues with the transmission, the service provided said he was going to contact Honda corporate to see what they could do. They charge me $89. I then took my car to joyce automotive repair in lakeland, their diagnostic found codes u0401-68 ecm failure and u0402-68 tcm failure. While operating an unmodified 2019 awd Honda hrv per the included owner's guide (page 86), the brake pedal was required during 100% of a 15 mile descent to maintain the vehicle"s speed within the posted 35 mph speed limit. The engine braking promised, in the "l" gear selector, by Honda's owner's guide was lacking. This issue has been verbally brought before the distributor, in addition to being formally listed as a complaint to the manufacturer. This vehicle, to which I am contractually obligated to own for 36 months, has significantly less engine braking capacity than the precedent set by decades of like vehicles which have been released to consumers with engine braking adequate for safe mountain driving. My own opinion may be irrelevant in motivating a motor company to improve or repair their product, but I refer to the idaho cdl manual as an authority on safe practices and equipment for mountain driving. Please refer to the idaho cdl manual, section 2. 6. 6 speed on downgrades "you must use the braking effect of the engine as the principal way of controlling your speed on downgrades. " as previously stated, the engine braking provided with the 2019 Honda hrv is not adequate as a principal way of controlling speed on downgrades. I would guess that this problem may be related to a lack of proper tuning in the pcm (powertrain control module) regarding shifting set points. This presumption is based upon the added electrical shifting control equipment featured on a premium model, with a mechanically similar transmission. There was no disclaimer presented regarding engine braking or mountain driving before, during, or since the purchase of this vehicle. The consumer has little or no indication that this would be a problem during an urban test drive.
