Body Problems of Honda HR-V - part 1

Honda HR-V owners have reported 73 problems related to body (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda HR-V based on all problems reported for the HR-V.

1 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 11/20/2025

My vehicle suddenly developed electrical problems and would not start. Before it completely failed, I began seeing warning lights on the dashboard, including a park warning and an engine oil light. The vehicle had been operating normally earlier that day, but later became totally unresponsive. The doors would not unlock electronically and the car would not start. This happened after a period of heavy rain. When the vehicle was inspected by a Honda dealership, they found signs of long-term water intrusion and corrosion affecting electrical components and wiring. I later learned that the vehicle had previously been repaired for water intrusion through the rear hatch/tailgate area, which may have allowed moisture into the vehicle over time. The car is now inoperable. This raises safety concerns because electrical failures like this can lead to sudden loss of reliability, inability to start the vehicle when needed, or potential failure while driving. The issue has been confirmed by a dealership service department, and the vehicle remains unusable. I am concerned that water may be entering through the tailgate or rear hatch area and damaging electrical systems. I have also seen similar complaints involving water intrusion and electrical failures in this model.

2 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 11/17/2025

The rear windshield of my 2023 Honda hrv shattered and broke randomly. There was no collision, tampering with, or theft attempts. No one was around the car. The rear windshield simply shattered - less than 48 hours after I purchased the car.

3 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 09/27/2025

Extensive and widespread peeling and DE-lamination of paint across entire vehicle beginning in 2025 (two years after extended warranty expired). About $6000 to repair and Honda refusing to assist/contribute to repairs.

4 Body problem of the 2019 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 09/02/2025

The car failed inspection due to rust which had formed at the attachment points where the body is bolted to the chassis. The importance of this location made this rust a severe safety risk. The problem existed on both left and right sides of the vehicle. The fact that water was channeled to these locations with no opportunity for drainage or rust protection is a clear design flaw. The vehicle had only 46,000 miles. Every repair shop I took the car to said "such a young vehicle should not be rusting like this". They all suggested that Honda should be responsible to fix this because the car was poorly designed.

5 Body problem of the 2019 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 07/31/2025

The paint on the roof of my Honda Hr-v is chipping and peeling. The problem appeared suddenly and has continued to spread. The rest of the vehicle’s paint remains intact, so this seems to be a defect in the roof paint or clear coat. While it does not trigger warning lights, the exposed areas put the vehicle at risk of rust and corrosion, which may affect safety and durability over time. The damage is visible and the roof is available for inspection upon request.

6 Body problem of the 2017 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 07/10/2025

My 2017 Honda Hr-v in white orchid pearl (nh-788p) has severe paint peeling on multiple panels (hood, roof, door). Honda issued service bulletin 19-064 covering this exact defect. However, I have been informed by Honda customer service and Honda dealers that my vehicle is no longer covered because it is 1 year beyond the 7-year extension period, even though the defect matches the exact conditions described in the bulletin. This is clearly a manufacturing defect, not normal wear. A consumer fairness concern, as the defect appears years before what should be the normal paint life of a vehicle. A potential safety concern, since exposed bare metal can lead to rust and structural weakening. I suggest an investigation into whether Honda should expand the paint defect warranty to include affected vehicles beyond the 7-year cutoff. As I believe paint on those defect vehicles don’t usually start peeling until about 7 year old or later and once they start to peel, they peel rapidly. I have attached photos of the peeling paint for your reference. Thank you for your attention to this matter!.

7 Body problem of the 2019 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 07/07/2025

I am writing to request your assistance regarding a paint peeling issue that has developed on my 2019 Honda Hr-v (currently at 50,320 miles). Recently, I noticed significant paint peeling at the top of the hood — in the exact same area previously identified in the 2016–2018 Hr-v models covered under Honda’s paint warranty extension. When I contacted Honda cares, I was informed that my VIN is not included in that warranty extension. This is very disappointing because I made a conscious effort to protect my vehicle by purchasing the clear coat warranty at the time of sale, believing it would cover or help prevent defects like this. Unfortunately, I was told that this issue is also not covered under that protection. This situation is particularly difficult for me, as I just finished paying off my car last month and am preparing to retire this year. My plan was for this Hr-v to be my retirement vehicle, and facing an unexpected repair so soon is a financial hardship I did not anticipate. Furthermore, I am aware of the lawsuit filed with the NHTSA concerning paint defects on Honda vehicles. Given that my paint is peeling in the same area identified in that investigation and covered under the prior warranty extension, I respectfully request that Honda extend that same paint warranty coverage to my vehicle as a gesture of goodwill and fairness. I chose Honda for its reputation for reliability and quality, and until now, I have been very pleased with my Hr-v. I hope you will consider my circumstances and the documented history of this paint defect, and help me resolve this issue so I can continue to enjoy my vehicle into retirement. Thank you very much for your time and understanding. I look forward to your response. Sincerely, karen m thompson.

8 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 06/10/2025

Rear glass shattered for no reason. Heard this is a big issue with Hondas & acuras. Dealership almost tried to make us go through our own insurance even though we bought it 2 days ago.

9 Body problem of the 2017 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 04/22/2025

I am the owner of a 2017 Honda Hr-v with paint code nh-788p (white orchid pearl). Over time, I began to notice significant paint peeling and flaking, primarily on the roof, hood, and upper panels. This defect progressed despite routine washing and care. Based on my research, this is a well-documented and widespread issue affecting many Honda vehicles with this specific paint code. Honda issued a technical service bulletin (TSB 19-064) acknowledging this defect and offered an extended warranty for paint repair. However, my vehicle is just slightly outside the 7-year window, and Honda has refused to assist. The cause appears to be a defect in the factory paint or application process, resulting in poor adhesion and premature paint failure. This has impacted the appearance and resale value of the vehicle and may also lead to long-term corrosion if the issue continues to spread.

10 Body problem of the 2025 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/08/2025

I purchased my car in December 26, 2024 brand new. In January 2025 I had a rock hit my windshield which caused a crack. I had it replaced. Then in June and another rock hit my windshield, which caused another crack, and that windshield was replaced again on August 6, 2025. Within 3 weeks of having it replaced a small piece of gravel hit the windshield causing another crack which I have not replaced yet. Since the last crack, I now have an additional crack cause by another small piece of gravel. I contacted the Honda dealer to which they said "sorry you just have bad luck" I have also filed a complaint with Honda customer service. I've done a little digging, and this seems to be a trend with the new 2025 Hr-v body style. I'm concerned that if the windshield is this easy to break with small gravel what would happen if something larger was to hit the windshield? it could potentially lead to serious injury. In my uploaded pictures I have photos of current damage, and my first invoice from January. If needed I can obtain the invoice from the second repair in August. The pictures I've uploaded happened after the August 6th 2025 repair.

11 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/02/2025

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -while driving (Honda hrv) the sunroof exploded and shattered glass sprayed all over our family. Nothing hit or caused trauma to the glass, it simply exploded by itself. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -shattered glass sprayed all over 3 adults and an infant and could have caused facial injuries, abrasions, and more. Additionally the loud noise of the explosion and distraction of the event could have led to a car wreck on a busy highway. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -unsure. I did see a class action law suit with Honda. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -in process were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -no.

12 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 12/31/2024

In the morning of December 31, 2024, I got into my 2023 Honda hrv and as I turned on the ignition, I was shocked by the shattering sound of glass at the rear of the vehicle. To my horror, it was the rear windshield that had shattered to smithereens. I was terribly upset by this incident and while thinking of my next action, I learned through google that it was due to a manufacturing defect with the 2023 Honda hrv model. Yet, I had not been notified by the Honda of any recall in regard to this defect. I took the car to the nearest Honda dealership where they plastered the rear of my car with a thin plastic and promised to call me as soon as they got the necessary parts. The incident could have caused serious physical and emotional injuries if I had passengers in the rear seats of the car. Even, all alone, I was emotionally traumatized by the incident.

13 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 10/05/2024

The rear window exploded while parked at a school. I put on the rear defrost while driving to the school and when I parked and shut off the car, that's when we heard the explosion. There was no external impact to the car. I've seen several reports of other 2023 hrv owners with the same problem. The car has not been inspected, but I called my Honda service center and they referred me to car tech who repairs the windshields. The representative was unable to tell me if Honda would cover the repair. There were no warning lamps, messages or other alert to a potential problem.

14 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 08/14/2024

The white orchid paint is peeling off on top of car and sides.

15 Body problem of the 2024 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 08/09/2024

Bought 5/28/24 a little over 2k miles on it. Noticed paint changing color on 8/3 at night when raining. Next morning the speckles of paint that the rain drops hit that were white disappeared. That night I was also frayed because there had been this foggy what looked like water stains on my windshield that the wipers weren’t cleaning off everytime it rained. Thought it was my windshield wipers or something I was doing with the condensation in the air when it rains. 8/8 downpour all day and my car panel is completely white and in the morning it was gone. Contacted mohawk Honda and said come there or go to nearest certified dealer ( I live 4 1/2 hours away from my home town where I bought it) went to nearest dealership they reviewed it and said it’s environmental or someone painted it but Honda has no record of it being repainted. They said it wasn’t covered under warranty and to call my insurance. I went there with pictures of other cars with the same year and model that posted pictures of their car paint doing the same thing and they said those cars could have been in a parking lot and someone threw battery acid on them. My issue is a safety issue because I have it on both windshield and panel of car and on the windshield it is invisible until it rains and becomes dangerous on highway when rain it hitting the windshield and wipers are not able to take off the hard water stain like film on it. Corporate said the dealerships are privately owned and they don’t always work together. Mohawk Honda(scotia NY) wanted piazza Honda (philadelphia) to repaint my body and they would buff my windshield. Corporate was nice but nice doesn’t save lives. They said no one likes a finger pointed at them and gave me specific instructions when I go to mohawk Honda to find out why regional managers decided it was vandalised. As a new car owner with a warranty I shouldn’t have to go through this and I have to drive with defect windshield for two weeks and my paint is still defect.

16 Body problem of the 2017 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 07/22/2024

The paint on the roof is peeling and some area around the windshield. I contacted Honda but was informed the extended warranty expired as of January 2024. The paint began peeling around July 2024. Honda also stated the extended warranty was valid from the time of purchase. However, I am not sure if this is for the initial purchase (1st owner) or when I purchase it (may 2019). If this is for the initial purchase then the extended warranty offered was negotiated fairly when it involves 2nd, 3rd owners who are now experiencing this issue. I should not have to pay for something that is clearly a manufacturer issue (peeling paint). When I drive at times the paint peelings further in the wind then blows off towards the vehicle behind me. I kindly asked this be addressed at Honda expense since they decided to use a cheaper paint on these vehicles. They need to be held accountable. R/.

17 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 06/18/2024

The car is a 2016 Honda hrv. The car is orchid pearl (white) and has developed extensive paint issues where the paint is peeling on the doors and potentially places on the roof. The car is an excellent overall condition with no history of auto accidents. This paint issue is common for this color hrv and impacts the value of the vehicle and will lead to body surface rust and the problem continues to worsen each month.

18 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 05/26/2024

My back window exploded at a stop light, literally out of nowhere.

19 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 05/15/2024

I was driving to work in my 2023 Hr-v on a main highway this morning, (5-15-2024) and I heard a pop sound. I looked in my rear view mirror and my back windshield was shattered. I have called my local dealer, white plains Honda and left a message. And as of yet have not heard back. There was no warning lights or signs anything was wrong. I did see on the evening news that this is an on going issue with Hr-v's. But no recall has been put out.

20 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 05/02/2024

Unknown. Cold morning with defroster on, rear windshield spontaneously shattered while driving on freeway. No evidence of external factors. Large hole and cracks all the way around edge. Notified chp. Do not know if report filed.

21 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 03/18/2024

After a rain storm, I noticed that the trunk door of my Honda hrv was filled with water. I could tell that it had a large amount of water in it because I could hear the water sloshing when driving. I also saw water slowly dripping from the trunk door when I opened it. I could tell that there was a lot more water in the door, but there was no way for me to drain it. In addition to having water in my trunk door, I found that the water had also filled in the spare tire well. Upon researching the issue, I have found that this is a common issue with my make and model as many people on a forum reported the same issue. I believe this is a safety issue because it can cause mold problems which is a health hazard. It can also cause damage to the trunk door and electrical components. In addition, water filling in the spare tire well could cause issues with the spare tire and potentially make it unusable. I took my car to the Honda service center and was told that this is a known problem for my make and model, and that the rubber around the tail light deteriorated. Their solution was to replace the tail lights, which would cost over a thousand dollars. Although I understand that rubber can deteriorate, this issue is not found on most cars and is specific to my model. The car should be designed to drain water and not have its parts fill up with water if the rubber has deteriorated.

22 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 03/11/2024

Rear window glass shattered on its own.

23 Body problem of the 2017 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 02/09/2024

I had to replace the transmission out of warranty at 165,000 miles. Also the lift gate holds water and deysbt drain properly.

24 Body problem of the 2018 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 02/06/2024

Was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -yes. February 6th 8:30pm burbank, CA, intersection glenoaks blvd and e. Cypress Ave - the alley (525 n. Glenoaks blvd, burbank, CA) there was a huge rainfall this evening. I was heading east on glenoaks blvd and was about to make a "u" going back opposite direction. Making sure there is no on going or opposite traffic, safely I made a "u" turn on a parking lot, the first parking spot. . And some of a sudden I realised that my car was touched some obstacle. It was a street light pole but from that pole there was a supporting 45 degrees angle metal wire going across a parking spot! I was not able to see a metal wire because of a light reflection and working windshield wipers. ! this metal wire went through my front of a car and cracked the front bumper, left fender I was not able to open my driver door. My speed by doing "u" turn was about 5 miles per hour. . I called to my incurance took a picture of an incident location they came up to me with an estimate $1. 553. 00. . . This is insane and might be definitely dungerous for motocycles and scooters. I have all the pictures, and video as well. Thank you!.

25 Body problem of the 2016 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 02/05/2024

Faulty seams and gaskets in the rear cause water to leak into spare tire well. This causes mold & mildew issues to occur. From online research, this is an extremeley common issue for the 2016 Honda Hr-v. There is evidence that the water is coming in through the rear tail lights. This has been a common failure point for many others online, which is why I think this is worthy of recall. I first had mold issues about 18 months ago. I thought it may have been from a spilled drink, so I sanitized the upholstery and moved on. Now a few weeks after some rainy weather, I found mold on the upholstery again and felt increased interior humidity in the car. My point is that this issue could remain benign for a long time and manifest as mold during heavy/rainy weather.

26 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/31/2024

While I was driving back from work on January 31, 2023 the rear windshield of my car exploded for no apparent reason. The noise was so loud that flinched. If there was a car was in front of me I would have caused an accident. The windshield shattered and if I had children or anyone in the back seat they would have pieces of glasses on the back of their heads. I was thankful that I did not have any broken glasses on the back of my head. I dropped the car off at a Honda dealership on January 31 st. I still do not have a car, nor will they give me a loaner to get to work. They were no warning messages that alerted me prior to the incident. I brought the car new and it's only a year old. I believe this is a defect on Honda's manufacturing. I hope no one get hurts by this, because I know it's causing me a lot of inconveniences.

27 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/21/2024

Rear window glass broke out of nothing without any collision or otherwise impact. I parked the car in a covered, safe garage and then the other day the rear window glass was completely shattered and broken.

28 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/21/2024

At 12pm on 1/21/24 my back windshield shattered. My car was parked and turned off when the explosion happened. I filed a police report and had a police officer look at my vehicle. I tried to reach Honda but they were closed so I will have to call and file the complaint with them tomorrow morning. I did report it with my insurance to get it fixed but I don’t feel comfortable driving the car anymore especially since it is my primary vehicle used to transport myself and my toddler.

29 Body problem of the 2024 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

I woke up mlk day to find that my side left mirror had cracked, from top to the middle of the mirror, just a straight line. There was no damage to the rest of the car, no indication of anything hitting the mirror, just a clean crack, eventually the crack when through the whole mirror. I then reported to my Honda dealership who then told me the side mirror is on back order which is causing a safety issue because it is challenging to drive when a mirror split it half, it throws off what I am looking at as I am driving there was no warning of an issue, just cracked and the car was parked in our driveway.

30 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/03/2024

While at the gym one evening on 1/3, I came back to my car and noticed a shattered rear windshield. Initially my thoughts were 'did my car get broken into?' however, nothing was missing and my gym is located in a fairly safe part of town. Also, this occurred early evening, one of the busiest times at the gym and an unlikely time for a break in. I notified the police, my insurance company, and the gym. The police reviewed footage of the parking lot and didn't see anything that suggested a break it. Shortly thereafter, I became aware of many hrv owners experiencing 'spontaneous' shattering of the rear windshield. The situation was beginning to make more sense. I believe that I am a victim of this defect.

31 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 01/01/2024

Back wind shield exploded out of nowhere while on the freeway almost crap myself.

32 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 12/22/2023

The rear window of my one year old 2023 hrv suddenly shattered, thankfully while vehicle was parked. No impact to glass or reasoning, I filed an incident report with police out of concern, they had never seen anything like it but stated it was not due to any object impact. This happened right on christmas weekend, leaving me without a safe car to drive which ruined some of plans and dealership was unable to assist but associate did mention she’s seen another customer with same issue and there are many similar instances online. I could’ve been driving or had my boy in the backseat when this happened. There seems to be some issue with the pressure points and placement of the window, frightening this can happen again. No warning lights triggered for this particular scenario. Please issue recall.

33 Body problem of the 2023 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 12/03/2023

Came out in the morning to the rear windshield shattered. No impact or anything of the like, just randomly shattered overnight while in my garage.

34 Body problem of the 2019 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 12/02/2023

2019 Honda hrv paint began to come off the car at 3 years old. Now the car is 5 years old and the area of concern is growing. The paint is pealing off down to the base of the car structure. This is a safety issue because when it begins to rust, the car parts will fall off. The area around with windshield is pealing decreasing the structural soundness of the car. When it rusts the windshield will not be held in place. Honda USA: anthony at 800-999-1009. 88024 was contacted and reported that even thought this same make and model car was recalled in 2016-2018 they will not fix the defect they knowingly manufactured. I have had the car inspected by fisher Honda colission center in boulder, colorado. They said it is the same paint issue they saw on the cars in 2016-2018. Where Honda did recall the vehicles.

35 Body problem of the 2018 Honda HR-V

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

I am writing to report a serious issue with the paint on my white pearl Honda Hr-v. The roof paint began peeling in 2023, and I initially attempted a minor repair using a paint pen from autozone. However, the problem has worsened significantly over the past six months. Recently, I took the vehicle to maaco for an estimate, and they quoted approximately $2,400 to repaint the roof and side panels. I also contacted the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, and they confirmed that I had purchased an extended warranty which expired in October 2024. After researching the issue, I discovered that paint peeling is a common and widely reported problem for white pearl Honda models. I spoke with both american Honda and the dealership on July 2025, and while the Honda representative acknowledged that they are receiving many similar complaints, they stated that the company is still investigating the root cause and does not currently offer compensation. They classified the issue as normal wear and tear. I keep my vehicle well maintained, and it is only 8 years old. I strongly believe this is a manufacturing defect, not a result of neglect or environmental wear. I would like to formally file a complaint and request that Honda take responsibility for this issue. Thank you for your time and attention. I can provide additional photographs, repair estimates, and additional documentation upon request.
