1 Adaptive Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 01/08/2024

I’m having two continuous, multiple incident, problems that the dealership swears up and down do not exist. I have tried calling the dealership multiple times, and the national Honda customer service line. Problem number one, sudden, breaking while driving at highway speed with no vehicle or other objects in front of me. Second problem is the adaptive cruise control no longer is activated on the vehicle after the most recent software update. Although Honda says they have not removed this component from my car or it’s software, the vehicle no longer slows down automatically when approaching a vehicle from behind while cruise control is activated.

2 Adaptive Cruise Control problem of the 2021 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 04/06/2023

I previously reported this issue to NHTSA and was given the case numbrer 1140044. Here is my recent letter to Honda. Case #13091850 (I was informed that this case was closed) although I did not agree that the adaptive cruise control issue was resolved, Honda closed the referenced case. I am writing to confirm that the issue is not resolved. I rarely drive the Insight but did so yesterday on a two lanes in each direction, limited access highway. Here are my experiences: on multiple occasions while driving at 60 mph in the right hand lane with acc controlling the distance to the vehicle in front of me, the vehicle in front moved to the exit lane clearing the path in front of me. As the exiting vehicle slowed in the exit lane, the acc applied the Insight's brakes, quickly reducing my speed to 30 mph in the driving lane. This sudden slow down exposed me to possible rear end collisions by following vehicles that were surprised by Insight's slowing in the driving lane. Once while driving at 70 mph in the passing lane with the acc controlling the distance to the vehicle in front of me, the leading vehicle moved to the right lane, clearing the lane in front of me. When the Insight approached the vehicle that had moved to the driving lane and was then going at a slower speed, the Insight applied its brakes, quickly slowing the Insight to 40-50 mph. Again this sudden slowdown exposed me to a rear end collision by the vehicle behind me that was also going 70 mph. This is the same issue that I reported earlier. Despite the Honda dealer where I bought the vehicle servicing the acc system under warranty, this unsafe issue still exists. It seems that the acc is not "unlocking" from a leading vehicle when it moves to the right despite the path directly forward being clear. Please advise as to Honda's next step in resolving this safety issue. Thanks arthur schwope 281 holden wood rd concord, MA 01742.

3 Adaptive Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 12/09/2022

I started the car on December 9th to find a bunch of errors. All the sudden I have lost my cruise control, collision prevention assist, light assist, and other features. I immediately took the car to the nearest Honda dealership near my home and got it checked out. The code showed that part #36163-txm-a45, a camera used for these features, had failed. I was told by jessie loso, the repair representative, that the part will need to be replaced. The car had only 14,763 miles on it however because it was barely driven during covid lockdowns. Now the original part was not damaged and it had failed on its own for no apparent reason. The only reason that we were given by victory repair department is that the car was left out in the elements. This was not an appropriate excuse for this failure considering we live in an area where many people park on the street or use their garages for storage, due too lack of space in their homes. I was told by victory Honda in san bruno. Ca to call Honda about the defect in the part and for reimbursement. The complaint was placed with sady case #13552610 on December 22nd with Honda itself. I was told that since there was no recall on the part itself, that I would not be reimbursed and that I would not get an extension on my warranty. I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor because I was not even being heard out by the representative. I was informed that a manager would get back to me eventually, but I would still not be reimbursed for a part that had failed for no apparent reasons or damage. I am writing this report today because this part is tied into many safety functions of the car. If the part has malfunctioned in this way, then who is to say that the car won’t break randomly due to the same part. I find this extremely concerning and was told by bar in California to report it to the NHTSA just in case it is a consistent issue with Honda vehicles.

4 Adaptive Cruise Control problem of the 2022 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 09/19/2022

My car was parked safely on my driveway. I turn on the car and all the lights came on including power loss failure, collision mitigation, etc. I had to tow it to a dealer where they claimed it was rodent damage causing an electrical failure on Monday, 9/19/22. The car was towed on 9/20/22. I was then told I was unable to claim any warranty. The dealer charged me $640. 00 for the repair. They claim the wire harness was chewed on which caused the system failure. I ended up having to pay out of pocket instead of using my $500 insurance to cover the damages. (insurance said it would likely raise my rates next if I continuously put a claim). I thought--one time incident, bad luck. The dealership refused to take photos of the chewed wires, but I was able to fight to receive some parts indicating the damage (who knows if it was actually mine or some they kept off of some other Honda--see attached photo). Not even 24 hours after having my car repaired to normal, I turn on the car in the morning and the same issues came up. I towed it again! the dealership claimed the rodent chewed my car in the same spot, at the same area. Charged me an additional $224. 00 to solder it back citing that they never seen this happen before. I find it convenient that no other vehicles on this street had issues with rodent damage. And the same area was bitten twice. Why would Honda create such an easily accessible route for rodents or a non-covered protected wire? as a consumer, I end up fronting the bill because neither the manufacturer nor the dealership, nor the insurance company (who would likely end up raising my rates) have to deal with a terrible design. Never had issues with other brands nor other older vehicles had this issue in the cul-DE-sac. Dealership ended up having wrapping the harness, but this car is new & should have been protected and repaired by Honda to begin with. Online search revealed Honda used soy based insulation which attracts rodents. Very unsatisfied with Honda.

5 Adaptive Cruise Control problem of the 2021 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 05/31/2022

The recent NHTSA disclosure of issues with Honda's driver-assistance technologies causes me to write about the troubling performance of adaptive cruise control on my 2021 Insight. When following another vehicle on controlled access highways, the system works fine. However if the vehicle in front enters an exit lane and slows, my car is slowed to the point that the brakes are fully applied, causing vehicles behind me slam on their brakes or swerve to avoid rear-ending me. The acc does not "let go" of the car in front of me.

6 Adaptive Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 02/19/2022

Both types of errors have occurred multiple times. Sometimes, the forward collision warning system triggers when no obstruction is present. More frequently, the adaptive cruise control decelerates even when no car is nearby or the car in front of me has not decelerated. In both cases, depressing the accelerator pedal overrides the automatic braking and avoid an accident.
