1 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2016

For the third time since we owned the vehicle the transmission has been slipping and the vehicle again isn't driveable. This is an ongoing problem with this y/m/m with many complaints. Nhtsa and Honda need to do a recall. I was driving when the transmission failed and was lucky to not have had any cars around me. This needs to be addressed with a recall and replacement by Honda. We're the original owners and Honda is aware of the problem as is NHTSA but no major action has been taken to recall. This is a safety issue.

2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

Check engine light on at startup. Honda dealership diagnosed problem as 2nd gear transmission slippage. Recommended a replacement transmission at appox $4000 or rebuilt or used at about $2500. Still thnking over my decision.

3 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2014

The automatic transmission began slipping at around 25 mph with d3 flashing and tcs light indicator on. The van began loosing power while driving and revolution high in the power train. This is the rebuild transmission I replaced in November 19, 2010. So it has been more than 3 years and the warranty from Honda manufacture has expired.

4 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2013

In 2009, at 90,000 miles, the transmission failed in the 2001 Honda Odyssey we bought new. The dealer negotiated with Honda a goodwill replacement of a rebuilt transmission where we had to pay $1471. 68. We were never told of the extended warranty that should have covered entirely the first failed transmission. Since owning this vehicle, we have spent thousands of dollars on scheduled and preventative maintenance on our cars at the Honda dealership. On April 12, 32,000 miles later, the rebuilt transmission began to slip intermittently, then seriously on my drive home from work. It slipped in lower gears and would not go into higher gears. I barely escaped being rear ended on the way home and was lucky to make it home. When I contacted Honda America 7 days ago, it took Honda over 1 week before telling us that they would not cover anything since we were outside the warranty period of 36 months or 36,000 miles. We also own a 2001 Honda accord brought from the same dealer on the same day. We also experienced the same failed transmission at @ 90,000 miles with the accord also and were given a goodwill offer by Honda that offset the cost we had to pay. Our 2001 accord is a ticking bomb with 120,000 miles and we will need to get rid of it before it fails also. Apparently the original and the rebuilt transmissions are defective. I read online that Honda did not rebuild the entire transmission, but only replaced the gears that failed. According to an expert transmission mechanic, there is an endemic problem within the transmission caused by a soft disk component that runs very hot that causes gears to be chewed up and eventually fail. This means that rebuilt defective transmissions are being reinstalled in the cars which will fail again because the component causing the problem was not replaced and it continues to damage the gears. What recourse is there?.

5 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2013

Transmission slips when shifting gears. Honda says they won't fix the problem because they were aware of the problem and offered an extended 109,000 mile or 7 year warranty and my car is beyond this warranty coverage. The transmission problem will cost between about $3,000 for a rebuilt transmission or over $5,000 for a new one. The car is only worth about $5,000 if the transmission didn't have a problem now much less with this problem probably only about $1-2,000. . Read more...

6 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2013

I bought a 2001 Honda Odyssey in Aug 2001 and in June 2009 the check engine light came on at 98000 miles. Took it to willis Honda (the dealer I bought the car from ) and they said the transmission had to be replaced (within extended warranty (93 months & 109000 miles) on miles and 2 months outside the extended warranty on months. Honda agreed to foot half the cost ($1200) as a one time goodwill. Now it is 145000 miles and this winter since January (I live in NJ) I notice that when it is cold and the engine is cold and I start driving without warming up around 20-25 mph the engine revs (possibly because the gear shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd doesn't happen smoothly). Took it to the willis Honda who had installed the replacement transmission in June 2009 (36 month/36000 mile warranty). It is now little over 43 months and around 47000 miles on this transmission. They say that the transmission is slipping and will have to be replaced ($5500) and that replacing the fluid/flushing the transmission would not do anything. Are transmissions expected to last only 47000 miles. I think Honda is selling bad equipment.

7 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2012

Automatic transmission slipped and engine revved to a high rpm as I was pulling away from a traffic light. Used hazard lights to warn drivers behind me.

Transmission slips from standstill; and occasionally at low speeds. Had transm. Lubed and "filter changed" but filter may not have been changed. Is internal? maint lite goes on and off, mainly on. Tcs light goes on and off, mainly off.

10 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2012

The transmission began slipping between the 2nd and 3rd gears. The vehicle would slowly move forward with very little apparent thrust then would suddenly "kick" into the next gear and lurch forward, then slowly move into the next gear. Also the tcs light came on and stayed on and the green drive (d) indicator began to flash. This problem is primarily with the drive gear and not so much the reverse gear. The check engine light came on two weeks ago and has remained on. An obd code reader on 22 Feb 2012 indicated 3 different fault codes -2 generic and 1 manufacturer- with the majority of explanations indicating specific transmission faults and one- a tcc code -electrical.

11 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2011

Transmission started slipping and engaging violently.

12 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

Both check engine light and tcs are on. When I pressed accelerator, engine is raising but transmission is slipping - gears are slipping. I took my vehicle to dealer. They asked me $3800 for new transmission + $1200 for labour + tax. I have only 108k miles. Still under 109k miles warranty. Since it is beyond the 93 months warranty, american Honda or dealer are not willing to do any help even though the miles are still under the warranty.

13 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

The engine & tcs light went on. Per the dealership perry motors . . All was ok - they changed the transmission fluid and said all was ok . . At 81,092 mile the tcs ligh & engine light went on again. . This time the transmission was slipping & we had to have it rebuilt- I tried going to the Honda dealership for help (weir canyon Honda)-they sent me to a transmission shop (less cost)where we had it rebuilt gave us a 2 yr warranty or 24,000 miles. . . At 91,000 miles the transmission went out again (unfortunately the shop where we had it repaired went out of business) so now it is being rebuilt at a cost of another cost of $3,000. 00- $3,500. 00 . . 16 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey and at a little over 75,000 miles I had to have the transmission replaced. I now have 44,000 miles on the new transmission and it has gone bad again. I have been doing a lot of research on this issue and have found out that there is a problem with the 1999-2004 Odyssey transmissions. We were lucky enough to pull off the side of the road safely when the transmission began slipping and seconds later the transmission went out completely and we were not able to move at all. This could happen to someone on an interstate which could cause a terrible accident which could include death. Honda is aware of this issue but has done nothing to fix the problem nor do they offer any help to consumers who have purchased the vehicle in the good faith that they are buying a safe reliable car. Consumers are not told about this defect and are the ones that suffer by paying the price of a new transmission due to Honda's issue. Honda will not take responsibility for this issue and it is not right. Most people do not have the money to buy a new car nor replace a transmission. Toyota was confronted about the issue with their cars so why has Honda not been in the news? are we waiting for fatalities?.

18 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2010

Transmission replaced on 12/28/2006 under warranty for slipping at 57,748 original miles. Now at 92,000 miles this replaced transmission is slipping again and on three occasion it seemed to be disengaged while driving on the freeway, I mean I push the gas but the car does not accelerate, the speed is reduced momentarily and then picked up and at other times I pulled over, turned the car off and got it to go. The car is at the dealer now and I have to pay ($2700) 75% of the repair cost. This incidents began around January 9th, 2010 until January 16 2010. Honda says the transmission needs to be replaced because of incorrect gear ratio. The replacement transmission is found defective at 37,000 miles.

19 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2009

2001 Honda Odyssey, 139,000 miles - check engine light and tcs light came on and transmission was slipping. Technician said transmission was bad and needed to be replaced. Not covered under warranty. Van accelerated whiled applying brakes and trying to turn. Hard shifts. Slow shifts. Very dangerous at intersections because van sometimes does not accelerate while trying to turn. Research into problem reveals Honda knows there is a problem with the transmissions in these vans but refuses to do anything about it. We transport 3 children in our van. Appears to be a very dangerous situation. It's time for something to be done. Will it take someone being killed in a Honda Odyssey - with known transmission problems - before anything is done about it. It's time to step in and hold Honda responsible before the unthinkable happens. They will not listen to individual owners. We need your help. Please.

20 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2009

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle hesitated unexpectedly and there was excessive gear slippage. Immediately, the emissions control warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. 25 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2005

At 83,000 miles the second transmission on my 2001 Honda Odyssey failed (registered in my wife's name, lynn roessler). Original transmission failed at 43,000 miles in 2003 and was replaced by Honda under warranty. In July 2005 the second transmission began to slip, check engine light came on, d4 light began to blink, tcs light came on. Returned call to Honda dealer, who again replaced transmission and left inboard joint. I do not know if I have now have a new or rebuilt transmission. I am concerned that the two transmissions I have had so far have lasted, on average, about 41,000 miles.

While driving back from vacation in nashville, TN on I-65n the transmission began slipping and the vehicle began to slow down rapidly. The particular area in nashville did not have much of a shoulder to pull off on. My family and I were very fortunate to find an off ramp soon and exit the interstate. The dealer stated the slipping was normal, because it meant the transmission needed to be serviced. The dealer stated the fluid replacement, would take care of the slipping problem. The vehicle exhibited the same problem 20,000 miles later, except to a greater degree. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where they stated, the transmission was a concern, and the warranty was extended to cover a possible failure. The dealer stated it should have been addressed when the vehicle was in for service previously. However, it wasn't and the warranty had since expired.
