1 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey (VIN# [xxx]), and I have noticed that the brakes have been soft for a long time. Since I had been having this same problem for a while, when I took it to the Honda dealership about a year ago, I had them check the brakes while it was in for other things. They told me the brake pads were fine and that they barely had any wear on them. They told me that's just the way Hondas are. But when I first got it brand new, I didn't have this problem. I found an article today about the pending recall for 2007-2008 Honda Odysseys, and it described the exact problem I am having with my Odyssey. I have to push the brake pedal all the way to the floor to get it to stop, or even to get it to slow down enough to turn. I called Honda this morning and reported it, and I was told that since my Odyssey is out of warranty, I would have to take it in to the Honda dealership, have them inspect it, and pay for the repair myself. I don't think this is right. I feel that the problem must be in more than just the 2007-2008 models, and Honda should expand the recall. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2009

1. During a routine service on 12/22/2009 the dealer tech / mechanic advised that both front and rear brake rotors on my 2005 Honda Odyssey were rust pitted and needed to be replaced. This is clearly a defect on a relatively new car since I own a 10 year old 2001 Honda accord which has not had any such problem so far - under same driving conditions. 2. This is a safety defect and will require a expensive fix (approx. $1500 quoted by the dealer) for a car under warranty. Cannot continue to drive the car with rusted rotors and 2mm pads. 3. The dealer has quoted $1500 to replace both front / rear rotors and pads.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2009

2005 Honda Odyssey touring has soft brakes at low mileage and rotors had to be replaced at 25,000 miles since they were rusted out, even though brakes had been serviced by Honda at all prescribed service intervals. Honda replaced all 4 rotors and pads at my cost, claiming that this wear was not abnormal and would not have been covered even if the vehicle was still under original 3-year warranty. My concern (which I shared with them) is that this is a safety issue since the parts failed after a very short interval even though the van was serviced at the intervals prescribed by Honda at a Honda dealer. The safety concern is that the braking distance with the rusted-out rotors increases stopping distance dramatically, even at low speeds.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

Brakes groan and shudder when applying significant pressure. Dealer refused to replace or service brakes unless I paid for total cost. I paid for cost of replacing pads and machining rotors out of pocket.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2006

: the contact stated while the brake pedal was depressed, there was a growl and intermittent vibration. The dealership alerted the contact that the manufacturer is trying to design a better brake pad. There is also a heavy vibration while the economy load light is illuminated. The dealership has replaced the engine mounts, rotated and balanced the tires, but the problem persists.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2006

: the contact stated while driving 30 mph on normal road conditions, the front of the vehicle shook when the brakes were applied. No warning signal illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the front wheel pads were worn out and the two front rotors were machined. After 4000 miles, the problem recurred and the dealership determined the front wheels brake pads were worn out and replaced them again. The problem persisted and the front shaking was noticed nine times. The manufacturer was contacted who opened a case with the commitment of calling back promptly which has not happened. There was a wind noise coming from the windshield and the left sliding door. The rear seat belt was ripped. Updated 11/14/06.

7 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2006

2005 Honda Odyssey: groaning and grinding noise when breaking esp when driven for a long trip. Break stopping distance increase. Complained to Honda but Honda said its not a safety issue. When breaking and not stopping is not a safety issue please investigate.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2006

: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at various speeds, there was a loud grinding noise. The vehicle was seen by the dealer. The dealer determined the problem with the brakes was not a safety related defect, but an ongoing issue the manufacturer attempted to redesign. The manufacturer has a newly redesigned brake pad, but it is only available for the newly manufactured vehicles therefore no repairs or corrections were made. Updated 03/17/06.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2006

Update to case #10155801: since vehicle had been sitting for over two months and Honda did not want to face that vehicle has safety issues - I decided to have vehicle towed to the other shop in town for a second opinion. I dropped vehicle off to have brakes done w/ other warranty issues and 9 day later I picked up vehicle and they installed the 1st design brake pads. The ones we had grinding, pulsating, loss of pressure and brakes that would locked up. I can not wait - give it a few thousand more miles and here I go again -- the first brake problems all over again. Please investigate the brake issues before someone gets hurt or even killed.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2006

When turning into parking spaces or making other sharp turns, van makes loud groaning noise. Have had the following done: brake dust blown out, rotors resurfaced and pads replaced, all of which helped for awhile but then noise returns. Car was shimmying when stopping from freeway speeds but that has stopped when brakes were replaced. Honda claims no knowledge of other cars with this problem, even though I have referred them to these websites. I have an '05 ex with about 45k on it.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2005

Right front brake makes a grinding noise when braking. Car is under warranty, but dealer refuses to remedy the issue as they are stating a remedy is being supplied by Honda without commitment as to when it will be addressed. This is a safety issue.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2005

2005 Odyssey with 10k miles experiencing loud grinding upon medium to hard braking. Mostly occurs with in town driving after brakes have warmed up. Will occur multiple times in a row and then not be heard again for weeks. This has happened several times and I have taken in into Honda 2x's to fix the problem. They said they have driven it and heard nothing. They checked pads and rotors and everything looks great. After being treated like I was crazy I returned to the dealership and asked to have a service manager ride with me when the problem was apparent. He heard the problem and after consulting with a shop foreman stated that Honda was aware of the problem but there was nothing they could do about. The problem continues and I have no options of fixing this until Honda figures out what to do.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2005

I purchased a 2005 Honda Odyssey touring model in August 2005. Within days, I began to have problems with a grinding noise in the front brakes when making a hard stop or stopping on a downward slope. I have addressed the issue on multiple occasions with the dealer. Initially, I was told that the brake pads were faulty and would be replaced. After they were replaced, the problem started again. Next the dealer told me there was gravel in the pad. The last time I went in, they claimed they could not duplicate the problem and there was nothing they could do for me. I asked them how many other complaints they had on this issue and I did not get a response. The manager became hostile and was extremely rude. Everytime I take it in, I am told that there is nothing wrong but mysteriously, the brakes are better for a period of time. I feel as if I paid $37,000 for a vehicle that may not even be safe. Honda must be made to do something about this problem. I have resolved to trade the vehicle in and buy another brand as the dealer refuses to help and has resorted to being down right hostile about the situation.

14 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

I purchased 2005 Honda Odyssey vehicle on may 31, 2005. By August the van had been driven approximately 3000 miles when I noticed that the brakes had started making scraping noises. It sounded as if there is sand or dirt on the brake pads. Also, when the brakes were used to make a sudden stop the front brakes would grind. It was intermittent at first, by 5000 miles it had become a regularity while braking. I reported this to my dealer and was told Honda was aware of the problem and was working on a solution. I have not heard anything to date.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2005

Intermittent grinding noise from front and rear brakes, associated with delayed stopping and brake feeling "soft". Dealer stated "gravel in brakes". Unable to reproduce at dealers. Multiple trips to dealer and finally reproduced. Informed that was caused by faulty brake pads and Honda needed to develop improved pads. 9 months before dealer informed me that new pads were available, despite multiple calls and visits to the dealer. All four pads and rotors replaced. It feels like a new braking system.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

The contact stated the brakes made a bad noise. The noise become more frequent with time. The vehicle was taken to the dealership multiple times, and they determined it was causing grooves in the rotors. The noise came from the brake pads. However, the manufacturer has not redesigned the pads. The dealership stated the vehicle was safe to drive. The manufacturer told her to take the vehicle to another dealership for a second opinion. This has not been done.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2005

Front brakes make a loud grinding noise and pulsation under moderate braking. Most noticeable on down-hill stops in warm weather.

18 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

May 2005- right front wheel bearing replaced. May 2006 left front wheel bearing replaced due to complaint of excessive steering wheel vibration when braking and when driving at highway speeds. Problem not resolved. July 2006 front brake pads replaced and front rotors replaced. Steering wheel vibration still exists at highway speeds.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2005

Grinding, pulsating hard to stop brakes at 8500 miles. Honda stated not a safety issue. Issue got worse and finally after 13 attempts through 2 dealers and their customer relations line, I filed with the better business bureau. It was deemed in the arbitration hearing that these brakes were indeed a safety issue. Poor brake pads which caused warped rotors are dangerous. Vehicle does not stop timely. Someone will get killed. Honda is well aware that there is a problem with the braking system on the 2005 and 2006 Odyssey (my parents have a 2006). When I first reported in April 05, Honda said they new of the problem, but continued to sell dangerous vehicles. Supposedly as of March 06 they have the new pads. It should be mandated that they notify every 05 & 06 Odyssey owner and advise them of the potential problem. Please make Honda do this because they won't on their own. According to Honda's own website "Honda genuine brake pads your Honda's ability to brake properly and reliably is obviously of the utmost importance for the safety of you and your passengers. " they advertise that the vehicle is the safest, but it is a dangerous family vehicle. Does a family have to die before Honda does the right thing?.
