6 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

A strong gasoline smell in the cabin and on the outside of the 2005 Honda Odyssey van. I called Honda in October about it they said take to dealer to check fuel relay switch, dealer said it was okay, but to diagnose the smell they have to charge me $120. I did not have the money so I had to leave. Been sick with dealing cancer appointments and , had no time or money to deal with car, finally I took it on 12/6/2016 to a private mechanic for only $40 and they said it had a crack on top of the fuel pump casing. But the whole fuel pump had to be repaired and was going to cost $563. They advised me not to drive it around, so I contacted Honda and they said if I take it back to the dealer they might help me with the repair, because they don't want the car to blow up while I am driving it. I inquired as to a recall for this problem and the service adviser stated that she was not aware of any recall notice for the fuel pump problem, but would see if I could get out of warranty help, I told her that I have read online and had printed out so many people stating their 2005 Hondas having this same problem. I would like to have this investigated for a recall. Just because I don't have the money to fix this faulty casing which is a common problem, I should not have to risk mine or anyone else's life. I will repost the outcome, Honda gave me a reference number and said someone should contact me by the end on 12/09/2013 to let me know if the can help with the cost.

Today I dropped the car off to hoehn Honda in carlsbad and the repair was approved for free as a goodwill jester, and Honda is also fixing a seatbealt since the sr light was on and airbag. 17 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

The van was operating normally until parked over night in drive way. Our driveway is slightly inclined and the vehicle was parked with engine facing forward. The next morning the car started fine and was warming up. 5 minutes later it stalled out and would not restart. I had the car towed to the dealership and after 2 days they said they said they could not find a problem. About 1 month later the same exact problem occurred. The van is again scheduled for service this week. I noticed a similar posting on this web site claiming that the fuel pump is located behind the gas tank and it was designed this way. Therefore there is no fix to this claim. Knowing this detail, I went outside and put the van in neutral to let the van coast to a more level state. The vehicle then started after the 2nd attempt. I'm still going to keep the scheduled appointment for service as I feel this condition is unacceptable. I've owned 2 other Honda's (different models) and never experienced this type of condition while living at the same residence.

18 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/24/2008

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact left the engine running while the vehicle was parked and it suddenly shut off. With a half a tank of fuel in the vehicle, it would not restart. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the gas tank was defective. The fuel pump is at the rear of the tank; therefore, if the vehicle is parked facing downhill, fuel cannot flow back to the vehicle for it to start. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle could not be repaired because it was designed in that manner. The failure and current mileages were 8,100.

19 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/06/2008

2002 Honda Odyssey transmission failure. We strongly believe that Honda has design problems. Despite their attempts to fix the problem by installing a fuel pump to lubricate the gears, the transmission (torque converter) had a massive failure. Initially, Honda agreed to pay for 50% of the repairs but retracted the offer after we voiced concerns about varying verbal repair estimates provided by the dealer. The dealer would not provide the repair estimate in writing even after asked to. We requested Honda to pay for the part and we would pay for the labor. Honda's position was that they would rather 1) retract the offer and 2) not help with dealers pricing or business practice because the dealership was independently owned and operated. Lisa prak, a regional manager with Honda suggested we could call bbb and file our complaint. Her supervisor suggested we contact the NHTSA but they would not participate in the repairs.

20 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/14/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle shut off. The failure occurred more than five times, twice while making a turn. The contact was able to shift into neutral, which allowed the vehicle to immediately restart. The most recent failure occurred while driving approximately 30 mph. He had an appointment to take the vehicle to the dealer at the time of the complaint. The manufacturer referred him to the dealer. The current mileage was approximately 41,000 and failure mileage was approximately 29,000. Updated 03/04/09. The fuel pump relay was replaced. Updated 03/04/09.

21 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/12/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The contact has to hold the nozzle to add fuel to the tank. The fuel warning indicator light has been illuminated for two weeks. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle for NHTSA campaign id number 04v420000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump); however, they did not indicate the results. On October 18, 2007, the dealer stated that there was engine failure and air conditioner wires were hanging, which could possibly be related to the coolant system. The contact was responsible for the cost to diagnose the failure. The estimated previous failure was on September 12, 2007. The most recent failure was on October 29, 2007. The failure mileage was 38,000 and current mileage was 39,500.

22 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/04/2006

My wife was driving our 2005 Honda Odyssey lx van and it died on the highway. She was able to coast to the side, get it to start one more time and limp into a parking lot(it died at the entrance of the lot). The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they looked at it and could not duplicate the problem. It was presumed that it was possible bad gas, or a 1 time glitch. I was told I could pick the vehicle back up. Not feeling comfortable with putting my wife and 1 yr old son back in the vehicle, I drove it 30 miles until the problem duplicated again. It died on a country road. I was told to wait a little bit and try and drive it in, it died several more times before finally dying on a bridge and needing a tow. After a few days the problem was finally tracked down to a faulty fuel pump relay. I was told this part was on national backorder which leads me to believe there may be more cars out there with this problem. If this occurs in the city during a left hand turn, it could have deadly results. I also wonder if this was related the fuse recall (my van was not included in the fuse recall). I am awaiting the part to arrive and be installed.

23 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/19/2006

Vehicle will stall sparadically within the first five minutes of driving. Vehicle can either be cold or previously driven and stall will occur. Once stall occurs the engine will restart without a problem. Stall can occur as many as three times daily or not for several days. At a stop sign I pressed the accelerator to turn onto oncoming traffic going at approximately 60 mph and the vehicle stalled in the inetrsection. Both my young children and I were nearly killed. The problem has been reported to the dealer and Honda as well. Vehicle has been to the dealer for service on this issue four times and dealer is unable to reproduce the problem. Problem is now ongoing for the past two months. This should be a real safety concern to Honda as well as all Odyssey owners.

28 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/10/2004

My van continues to stall. The fuel pump and fuel pump relay was replaced in late September, but the van continues to have the same problem. It will start, run for 1-3 seconds, and shut down. It will take anywhere from one try one hour worth of tries to get it to start up again. The van has left my family stranded on several occasions. I have contacted the Honda dealer, and they tell me this is normal. I don't believe a vehicle with 7000 miles normally does not start, and can take up to one hour to start. They also have told me that I am flooding the vehicle-even though I am not touching the footfeet and have always driven a fuel injected vehicle. My husband and I are to the point that we do not even want the vehicle, but our dealer does not seem to take us seriously. I read a complaint that a customer filed stating metal was sent throughout her vehicles fuel lines. How can the service department check to see if this is what has happened to my vehicle. The service department continually tells me they can do nothing unless the service engine light comes on. This has yet to happen. I am very tired of being stranded by my brand new vehicle.

29 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/28/2004

My family and I were on a vacation in our 2004 Odyssey. Our vacation was almost 2000 miles, round trip. When we were nearing our destination, our vehicle suddenly began to lose power when we would try to pass. It was getting so bad that we decided to pull off at a Honda dealership along the interstate. The serviceman jumped in the vehicle and it did not act out of the ordinary. He told us that likely a computer chip was off and needed resetting, so if it did it again, to be sure to pull off the interstate and shut off the vehicle. We proceeded another 60 miles or so without incident. Upon our return trip a week later, the van did the same thing. It was getting so bad that we could only go 45 miles per hour in the passing lane on the interstate. (keep in mind that our van had less than 3,000 miles on it when we left for our trip. ) we pulled off a few times to try to "reset" the vehicle, to no avail. Finally, we knew we would not make it home. At that point, our engine light and tcs lights came on and stayed on. We pulled off at another service center, at which point our van totally died. We had to have a tow, a taxi, and get a hotel since it was Sunday. It turned out that the fuel pump failed and sent metal throughout the system. They had to flush the tank, hoses, etc. , replace the fuel pump, and replace a couple of fuel injectors. The vehicle was out of service for eleven days. We are now fearful that there is engine damage that won't show up until after the warranty has expired. So far, Honda has paid for the repairs and our rental car home (we think), and they said they would pay for the tow and the hotel but will not pay for the cab, the extra meals out, all of our phone calls to make arrangements, etc. They basically said that it is not their fault that we were so far from home when the vehicle failed. We totally distrust our van and don't like Honda of America's attitude.
