On may 2nd, we drove our 2019 Honda Odyssey xl-e to church, and as soon as we pulled into the parking lot, we started to see smoke coming from our front hood. We exited the car. Within 30 seconds, the car then went into flames, and exploded and the car is now unsalvageable. When I went online, it seems like this is a common occurrence with these Honda Odysseys. There were no warming lamps, messages, or lights that would have alerted me that something this serious would occur. We have taken our care to Honda for years for regular maintenance. We don't take it to any independent shops. Strictly to Honda for years. The most recent checkup/service was performed on February 11, 2026 where they performed the following services which they had recommended. 1) oil change 2)engine coolant flush with conditioner 3)transmission fluid change: 4) wheel alignment 5)fuel tank additive, throttle body service, and injector. This is serious safety event and our family and children could have been killed in this accident. We have pictures, videos, police report, and the car has been taken to a salvage yard. We have filed a claim with state farm.

Complete shutdown of the engine while driving. No warnings - no flickering- no stumbling or misfire, just complete engine shutoff - dash and everything just turns off. Reading up on past recalls for this era of vans (mine a 2016) the 2013-2020 recall on the fuel pump sounds identical to this same thing I am experiencing. I was driving along in the city with my family in the vehicle and 2 times already while driving it has done this complete shutdown. If I wasn’t an experienced driver it would be enough for anyone to freak out and possibly cause some serious accidents. After I pull over and can try to restart the vehicle , thankfully it has restarted and allows me to continue forward. This is obviously not normal for a vehicle, or even a fuel pump.

The blind spot system was a problem when I purchased the car, it spent 15 days in service in the first 30 days of ownership to address the issues. Now, I after another light came on I discovered 9 open recalls on the vehicle that were not disclosed prior to purchase.

Multiple times of driving the vehicle as I am trying to press the gas pedal while driving it acts like it is not working and suddenly it stutters and stalls. The car will shut off and put you into to neutral while you try and pull over to the side of the road without being hit. It happens randomly and without rhyme or reason. After it shuts off codes are thrown such as brake failure, emissions failure, hill assist failure, steering failure, and lane assist failure. The car will be really hard to restart and if eventually will and then everything will disappear and go back to normal. Codes leave and car drives fine until it messes up again. First time it happened was months ago from this report, and then it happened monthly, weekly and now almost daily but only when you try and drive. Very unsafe and there’s no reason cars should stall at high speeds going down interstates!.
Our Odyssey is equipped with idle stop. Sometimes when idle stop engages, the engine won't start again afterwards. We need to turn the car off completely, and then try again. Usually it turns on after doing so. We try to always turn off the idle stop when we start up the vehicle, but sometimes forget. This hasn't led to an accident yet, but has led to some angry vehicles when we can't move when a traffic light turns green. To be clear, this was not an isolated incident, but happens somewhat regularly if idle stop isn't turned off. Honda dealers have told us they don't have any fix, and have recommended that we could purchase a third party "idlestopper".
I was driving to work on April 7th, 2026 and parked the vehicle at my company parking lot. Prior to parking, I noticed unusual smell and then parked the vehicle. I parked the vehicle around 8. 10 am and I got the call from my facilities manager around 8. 30-8. 40 am that my car caught on fire and by that time I noticed houston fire department extinguishing the fire. There were no check engine sign and this vehicle is a brand new vehicle when I purchased. Though there is no recall associated with my VIN #, the fire issue is similar to recalls for 2019 Honda odysey. The recall numbers are 23v-751( engine fire recall) & 20v-066 ( electrical wiring fire recall).
[incident description & manufacturer's bad faith] on April 6, 2026, an authorized Honda dealership (mcconnell Honda in montgomery, al) diagnosed my vehicle (2019 Honda Odyssey ex-l, 143,097 miles) with dtc p219a (rec replacing fuel injector set and fuel feed pipe at this time), requiring a fuel injector replacement. This exact mechanical failure is documented in Honda’s official service bulletin 21-010. The bulletin acknowledges that defective fuel injectors can cause engine misfires, loss of motive power, and engine stalling while driving. These conditions present an immediate and severe safety hazard. Honda established a 150,000-mile warranty extension limit for this defect in TSB 21-010. My vehicle has 143,097 miles and is well within this limit. However, american Honda corporation has arbitrarily refused to repair the vehicle. Furthermore, on April 21, 2026, the assigned Honda case manager left a voicemail officially denying the repair. He explicitly refused my repeated requests to provide this denial in writing. In the voicemail, he falsely stated that my vehicle at 143,000 miles is "well outside the range" for assistance, directly contradicting Honda's own written 150,000-mile bulletin. Please review the attached documents, including the official dealership diagnostic report (dtc p219a), the repair estimate, and a copy of TSB 21-010. I have also secured the audio recording of the case manager's voicemail to prove their bad faith. Honda is knowingly leaving a dangerous vehicle with a confirmed, documented fuel system defect on the road, while actively providing false information to the consumer to avoid repair costs. I strongly request the NHTSA to investigate Honda's deceptive and dangerous practice.
Our 2018 Honda Odyssey repeatedly and without warning completely loses acceleration power, creating extremely dangerous driving conditions. This occurs in two distinct situations:(1)while driving at highway speeds when attempting to change lanes or accelerate, and(2)when stopped at a stop sign or intersection and pressing the gas to merge into or turn into traffic. In both situations, pressing the accelerator results in little to no response — the vehicle will roll but fails to accelerate as needed. These failures have placed our family in multiple life-threatening situations. On interstate 285 in atlanta, georgia — one of the busiest and highest-speed highways in the country — our vehicle has failed to accelerate during lane changes on multiple occasions, nearly causing serious accidents. Most recently, within the past week, my husband was driving on I-285 when he pressed the accelerator and the vehicle had absolutely zero acceleration response. He narrowly avoided a collision. We have also experienced complete loss of acceleration when turning from a stop sign into traffic and when merging — situations where immediate acceleration is critical to safety. The vehicle lags for several seconds before any power is delivered to the wheels, leaving us dangerously exposed in oncoming traffic. All manufacturer recalls have been completed, including the fuel pump recall. The problem persists and has not been resolved by any dealer service or recall repair performed to date. We are aware that this is a known, widespread defect affecting 2018 Honda Odysseys equipped with the zf 9-speed automatic transmission. Hundreds of other owners have reported identical symptoms to NHTSA and to Honda directly. Honda has acknowledged the transmission's behavior to some owners but has stated it is "how the car is supposed to drive" — a response that is wholly unacceptable given the documented near-accidents this defect is causing. We are requesting that NHTSA open or expand its investigation.

My car issues a emissions systems problem, upon bringing it to the dealer it was identified that the fuel injector system failed. This is a known issue with 2019 Honda Odysseys. Upon running the VIN on my vehicle, it was found it does not qualify under the extended warranty even though this is a known issue.
My Odyssey began to shudder and misfire. Luckily, I was in a parking lot when it happened. It stopped running. Several attempts to restart were unsuccessful. Once when it did start, it was missing and would barely move. After about 15 minutes, I was able to get it started and get home (a little over 2 miles). I installed my code checker to find the problem. I initially had 22 codes - including p0301-p0306, p0300 and p0087. I waited a while and re-ran the test. The p0087 continued to show. I did not attempt to drive it anymore until the next day, when I took it to canady & branch (auto repair). They checked for codes and also had the p0087 code. They called and informed me of the issue and indicated that it involves the fuel pump. They also indicated that there were recalls for the Honda Odyssey for the fuel system:fuel pump. I contacted priority Honda to determine if this would be covered under a recall. I was told that the recall did not involve my Odyssey. I needed my vehicle, so I had canady & branch make the necessary repair ($874. 42 - the diagnostic was an additional $77). I spoke to Honda USA today and was informed that they do not cover 3rd party work and reiterated that my vehicle was not on the recall list. I was told that it had been on the list but was removed in March of 2024.
Vehicle jerks and stalls while accelerating and has died and coasted at times. Was told it has a recall but was not issued one since I have owned it since early this year. Called a Honda dealership and was told that it did not qualify for the recall. Seems to do this after I’ve drove it for a while and it is warmed up.

After stop at traffic light with air conditioning on, the auto idle stop system engaged. When the brake was released, the engine stalled, able to be restarted after 5-10s. Problem exactly matches nhsta investigation ea25004.
The vehicle was stopped at a red light. This vehicle is equipped with an auto-start/stop system to save fuel. Once the red light turned green the engine refused to restart. This was the second instance. The vehicle took over 30 seconds before it would restart. None of the push-to-start buttons worked, the car would not recognize that the brake was pressed, and it had also shifted itself into park. Very dangerous while traffic was moving all around us.

I stopped at a red light and then my car just stopped. It seemed the car wasn’t able to start up the engine from the idle mode. I had to restart the car at the intersection with a truck behind me and with 3 kids under the age of [xxx] on the car with me. Vehicle intermittently loses propulsion during acceleration when merging. Engine rpm remains low despite throttle input. After a delay, transmission re-engages abruptly with a metallic scraping noise. This creates unsafe merging conditions. This happened today, 2/14/2026 in 4 instances in the same trip. It has also occurred approximately 50 other times over the past six months when the mileage was as low as 66,100 miles.
Vehicle was inspected, vehicle is leaking fuel, but it's difficult to spot, but I have to put fuel on it daily, tcs goes haywire almost caused me to crash because the tcs sensors are near the tires, and engine crank sensor issues, vehicle does not do last gear shift, and rear door stopped working.

My 2019 Honda Odyssey had an emissions code come up with obd ii sensor code of p219a which led to research revealing that the code was a result of fuel injector failure. I took my van to the dealer who revealed that based on my VIN, I am not eligible for the extended warranty issued by Honda in 2021. This has resulted in a $1900. 00 repair bill that should be covered based on history and problems. Ref: [xxx] and [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
"emissions system problem" engine warning light has been on for quite some time. I know there is a service bulletin related to this issue, but my VIN is not covered. There are also several other warning lights that occasionally pop up, and my Honda dealer believes these are all related to the initial warning light. They mentioned that sometimes these systems start shutting down so the vehicle runs properly. Recently I received "transmission system prolem" (in conjunction with the slew of warning lights I have frequently been getting). No apparent issues until recently when I was driving on the interstate. The engine started to become very loud and when I looked at the rpms it was very high, over 5,000 rpms. The car wasn't shifting out of first gear at 55mph. I immediately slowed down and got off the interstate as soon as possible. After arriving home, we unhooked the battery, re-installed, and all of the warning lights were gone. Again, the Honda dealer believes all of these issues were realted to the "emissions system problem", which is part of a service bulletin that should be covered by warranty extension. I beleive my VIN should be included, and the recent transmission system problem which happened on the interstate was very dangerous and could have ended very badly, had I not been in tune with what was happening.
Life-threatening acceleration lag: the vehicle is experiencing severe power loss during critical driving moments, for example, while entering intersections or attempting to re-accelerate into moving traffic. When I attempt to speed up, the engine fails to respond initially, leaving the vehicle stranded in the path of cross-traffic. The engine finally engages only because I am forced to floor the accelerator pedal out of necessity, which then causes the tires to squeal when power eventually returns. Intermittent starting issues: the vehicle frequently fails to start smoothly on the first attempt; a known symptom associated with the fuel pump impeller deformation described in recall 23v-858. Vcm shudder and hesitation: I am experiencing the distinct vibration and rhythmic shudder associated with the variable cylinder management system. This symptom is most prominent during deceleration or coasting; specifically, when I lift my foot off the accelerator without applying the brakes, the system triggers a noticeable shudder as it incorrectly manages cylinder engagement/deactivation. Suspected catalytic failure (codes p0420/p0430): both catalytic converters are exhibiting inefficiency codes simultaneously, which are highly atypical and occur well before the expected component lifespan. This clearly points to upstream defects. Specifically, the catalytic substrate has been poisoned by carbon and phosphorus deposits from the documented oil-burning defect and has suffered thermal damage due to the improper fuel mixtures caused by the defective high-pressure fuel pump (recall 23v-858).
The vehicle completely stalled, we believe it’s related to the engine in reference to the idol on and off mechanism. We began to drive forward and the auto on off starter caused the car to completely shut down and freeze in an intersection.
I brought my van in for service because, when stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle enters automatic shutdown as designed; however, when I release the brake, the engine does not restart. Instead of restarting automatically, the vehicle remains off, and I have had to perform a hard start because it will not crank on its own. The van is a brand-new 2025 Honda that was purchased new. After inspection, I was informed that the battery would need to be replaced. During the same visit, I also reported a vibration issue. After checking this, I was told that the vehicle needs new shocks and that the tires show wear. I was further informed that the tires will not be covered. Given the age of the vehicle and the fact that it was purchased brand new, I am concerned about the need for a battery replacement, suspension repairs, and tire wear at this stage, as well as the decision not to cover the tires.
Idle stop failure. This has occurred many times. Presents itself failure to restart upon releasing the brake. Rough restart. Sometimes have to completely turn off car and restart.
While driving, the vehicle loses power, hesitates, and jerks, then stalls and shuts off without warning, especially in extreme heat and stop-and-go traffic. The failure occurs more frequently when the fuel level drops below approximately half a tank. After stalling, the vehicle will not restart until it cools down for 20–30 minutes, then temporarily operates normally before the issue repeats. Warning symptoms prior to failure include loss of acceleration, hesitation, and engine overheating. A fuel pump–related fault code has been detected. The vehicle has stalled while driving, creating a serious safety risk due to sudden loss of power in traffic. This condition matches NHTSA recall 23v858000, which states the fuel pump may fail and cause engine stall while driving. The fuel system component believed to be involved is available for inspection upon request. The issue has occurred multiple times and is reproducible under similar conditions.

I am writing to formally report and complain about a serious safety issue I am experiencing with my Honda Odyssey related to the auto idle stop feature. While the vehicle is stopped and auto idle stop is engaged, the engine unexpectedly shuts down and, in some cases, does not restart properly when I attempt to accelerate. This has occurred after normal driving and also immediately after refueling. When the issue happens, the vehicle loses power completely for several seconds, creating a dangerous situation—especially in traffic, at intersections, or while making turns. This issue is not only inconvenient but also a significant safety concern. A delayed or failed engine restart can easily lead to accidents, particularly when quick acceleration is required. I understand that auto idle stop is designed to improve fuel efficiency, but it should never compromise vehicle safety or reliability. I am aware that other Honda Odyssey owners have reported similar problems, which suggests this may be a known or widespread issue. I would like Honda acknowledge this problem as a potential safety defect investigate whether this issue is related to the auto idle stop system, fuel system, battery, starter, or engine control software advise whether there is an official fix, software update, recall, or service bulletin addressing this issue provide guidance on how Honda plans to resolve this problem permanently please let me know the next steps to have my vehicle properly inspected and repaired. I expect Honda to take this matter seriously, as it directly affects driver and passenger safety. I look forward to your prompt response.
The emissions warning comes on and off, the Honda dealer said it's a fuel injection system issue. Noted that NHTSA has issued extended warranty for this issue on 2019 Honday Odysseys but my specific VIN is not included. Nhtsa needs to extend this issue to additional vins having this issue as Honda is not covering it.
Car doesn't start, has needed to be jumped almost 20 times in a year. Auto start stop has shut the car off in intersections.
Accelerator pedal becomes non-responsive while driving. Honda has addressed some of the affected vehicles.
Fuel injector went out while driving known problem Honda only recalled some of the vans not all.
Vehicle shuts down and will not restart. So far this has happened three times. After a long delay, took foot off gas, held brake and pushed start and would not start. On third attempt vehicle was very labored on start.
I went to my van, and many alerts were going off on the dash about multiple systems failing and not working. I got the van to the dealer who said it was the fuel injectors that needed replaced. I found a service bulletin about this saying american Honda is extending the warranty on the fuel injection repairs to 10 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. The dealer said there was not a recall on my VIN and there was nothing they could do and I was forced to pay for the repairs.
Engine turns off by itself at stop. Auto idle stop was not turned on. It also happened when I pressed the reverse button. When it turns off by itself, I have to turn it back on and put it back into gear. It happened 4 times today.

I own a 2018 Honda Odyssey elite. While driving to er for my daughter engine started making weird knocking sounds, when I stopped at a red light to turn left off the interstate Odyssey just died and began to smoke. My daughter and I were advised to get out of the vehicle for safety reasons, due to smoke. There was no warning lights or any other indication that the Odyssey had a problem. 911 was contacted fire and police responded, it was determined that engine reached max temperature. Odyssey was towed to Honda dealer for diagnostics, it was determined that connecting rod bearing was bad and long block needed to be replaced, starter also imploded and needed to be replaced. I contacted manufacturer to ask for a "goodwill repair" due to NHTSA campaign number 23v751000. Per manufacturer Honda would not offer any assistance for the engine repair even though recall matches exact part affected in the recall. All regular maintenance oil changes, 100,000 mile service, new tires, have been performed on the Odyssey. I can provide receipts and records. The failure mileage was 167,384.
