Subject: urgent safety concern: driver side middle seat belt malfunction I am writing to report a serious and distressing incident involving the driver-side middle seat belt in our Honda Odyssey van. While parked, the seat belt became stuck and tightly wrapped around my [xxx] son. Despite trying all possible options, including turning off the engine and shifting to park, we were unable to release the belt. After struggling for 45 minutes, we had no choice but to cut the seat belt in order to free the child. The experience caused significant panic and distress to my child and was extremely dangerous. This raises serious safety concerns. Please let me know immediately: •if this is a known issue or part of a recall. •what steps Honda is taking to address this. •whether it is safe to use the vehicle until this is resolved. We are extremely concerned and would appreciate your urgent attention to this matter. Sincerely, information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Driver seat belt keeps releasing by itself. I put on my seat belt and then it pops open. I haven’t been in any accidents but it’s scares me that it can just release easily therefore no providing me with any protection. I have not taking it in to be reviewed but it has happened multiple times.

Top left rear exterior seam/seal on the top of the roof, under the black strip that runs front to back is leaking inside the left inner side/panel of the trunk, leaking water into all electrical components (break/turning lights) as well as the left rear seatbelt mechanism, soaking seatbelt, rendering it unusable. Could be a potential fatality in case of an accident.

Van has open recalls on driver and passenger side airbags. Van also has a defective driver front seat belt tensioner that Honda claims has a lifetime warranty, but hendrick Honda of bradenton FL refuses to perform the recalls or replace the defective seatbelt tensioner. Even after advising them that they are required by law to perform any open recalls and are not allowed to charge anything for said recalls, service writer "tammy" was uncooperative and kept alluding to things like she couldn't guarantee we would not be charged up to $1500 for these repairs which honestly should all be recalls as they are life safety issues. Due to their refusal to perform even the NHTSA recalls even after being given the documentation of the required recall, we have to find another dealership and hope they will perform the recalls.

Our 7 year old was sitting in her car seat when the seatbelt lost tension. Turns out the bolt, securing the belt, was never actually bolted in with the proper torque. The lock washer was as good as new, so if it was threaded at all it was certainly not enough to protect a family. As you can see in the picture, the lock washer was never engaged, this should not have been on the road.
All cars slow down on the on the highway at construction area due to some debris flow. I slow down immediately. After that my seatbelt belt not retracting (stop working) and air bag sign was displayed. I took the car to the dealer and also contact Honda (corporate) by live chat. Honda corporate mentioned the following warranty is part of the seat belt, srs system, and airbag. As per the Honda warranty, all repairs must be complete without any charges. But I got the attached invoice(cost of repair) to fix the issue with the srs system, seat belt, and air bag issue. According to the Honda warranty app parts and labour must include I opened a claim with Honda (case #14025524) but so far I didn't hear from them. As per my understanding safety issue related to my car must be fixed without any charge. Also, dealer must communicate with Honda. So far I open a claim with insurance but not required because Honda must take care of or look at the seat belt/air bag/srs system. As per my understanding issue with srs system and airbag are related with seat belt (part of on function) see attached diagnosis report from Honda dealer. Continues for 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Warranty coverage Honda will, at its option, repair or replace any Honda seat belt component that fails to function properly during normal use. This includes all parts and labor charges.

We had a disturbing incident of my 16 year old son getting stuck and twisted in seat belt on a long drive to montana. We had a safety worker helping us and he tore off the side of the plastic where the seat belt is, hoping to find a release button with no luck. . He ended up having to cut the belt. Now our van has lots of damage from that when it could have been an easy fox with a release . . It was a very tense 40 mins of getting it off. . It was very tight around his waist and constricting his abdomen.

Over the summer when our Honda Odyssey was only a couple months old (we had bought it brand new)my 7 year old son ended up with the seatbelt in the back passenger seat wrapped around his neck! he was playing with the seatbelt and somehow got it around his neck. I was driving and his siblings told me what was happening. I of course quickly pulled over into a parking lot and I couldn’t believe how tight it was wrapped around his neck in such a short period of time! as I was trying to loosen it it just kept getting tighter and tighter. My daughter ran into a taco bell and asked them for scissors and the workers couldn’t believe the situation we were in said there’s no time to even call 911 they had to cut him lose. So we had to cut the seatbelt with scissors to save his life as it was super tight on his neck. It was an awful experience I never could have imagined happening. I see that this seatbelt locking system is placed on new cars and I think it’s so dangerous. I now have no seatbelt on the back seat of my car as it had to be cut off and the dealership said it’s thousands to be replaced. All they said was I’m sorry that happened to you. I think it’s awful cars are made this way. My son could have died.
We purchased a brand new Honda Odyssey and when driving my 7 year old son began playing with the seatbelt. The seatbelt became wrapped around his neck and went into locked position so it couldn’t be loosened. I thankfully was near a restaurant so was able to get scissors from them and had to cut the seatbelt off my sons neck to free him! it was terrifying that I couldn’t release the belt from his neck and I’m lucky I was able to get scissors to free him! the seatbelt should not automatically lock if retracted all the way! there should be a release button! I went to the dealership to get the seatbelt replaced and they are charging over a thousand dollars! like I said, brand new van and I had no other option but to save my son from strangulation by cutting the seatbelt free!!!.
The third row seat belt latch constantly gets stuck when lowering the driver side seats down. It has bent over time and it finally broke in half. We constantly try to move it to be safe but as the driver side seats go down, they catch the passenger side seat and pull the seatbelt latch with it. It results in the latch part being crushed between the seats. It was still usable up until this weekend when it got caught again and broke the latch completely.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while her grandchild was seated in the third row driver side seat, the seat belt became twisted around his waist as he became stuck in the seat belt. The contact unbuckled the seat belt but the seat belt failed to retract and loosen the child from the restraint. The child began to scream in pain as attempts to loosen the belt made it tighter. The contact called the authorities who sent the fire department to assist; the fire department was forced to cut the seatbelt to release the child. The child sustained red markings around his waist but did not need any medical assistance. The dealer and the manufacturer was both notified of the failure but neither provided any assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 59,000.
False seatbelt latching during cold weather. I always wear my seatbelt. When the weather is cold, I will buckle up,hear an audible click, and tug on the seatbelt, but every so often it will become unlatched as I am driving (2-3 times per week. ) seems ok once vehicle warms up and in warmer weather.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the driver's side third-row seat belt had detached; however, the buckle was still intact. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
The driver's seat belt consistently came 'unbuckled'. There were times that I had to pull over to re-insert it into the base. On 14 Dec 2022, I took the van to Honda of gainesville FL to have this evaluated and repaired. The seat belt was replaced that day for a total of $269. 67 (a receipt is available upon request). Last week, I checked the recalls online and Honda is recalling its 2018 Odyssey vans for this same problem. When I called about this, I was told by both the local dealer's staff member and Honda's recall staff member (888-234-2138) that our VIN was not included in the recall. This is the reason I am writing to you; I believe that our VIN should have been included for this recall and the seat belt replacement covered by Honda. I don't see how it could not be included. Also, we want to notify you of this situation should other Odyssey owners be affected.
We have had issues with our drivers side seatbelt since we purchased the vehicle new. First it had retraction issues, then the plastic stop button that keeps the buckle from sliding down failed, disintegrated. We asked the dealer to replace the belt which they refused to do. We have brought it to the dealer before, even generating a case number from Honda, but Honda refused to repair the belt. Over the years it has gotten progressively worse, where the belt is seriously frayed, and there are retraction issues. In August 2022, I contacted our local dealer, piazza Honda in springfield, PA. It took almost a month for them to take the car, make some photographs, and then to leave out of the notes that we had an ongoing retraction issue. Two months later, Honda corporate informed me that they are denying the claim for the defective seatbelt. The warranty as stated in the handbook states a lifetime warranty for seatbelts. All aspects of the car pass state of PA inspection requirements, all other aspects of the srs systems are fully functional, with the exception of the drivers seatbelt. We believe that Honda's determination of non-liability is a ruse, a cynical attempt to exploit their customers in a critical safety component. We deserve a replacement seatbelt, and Honda customers need to be reminded that Honda is legally required to stand by the mandated lifetime warranty for seatbelts. We feel that our only recourse to request that your agency look into this issue, and remind Honda of their responsibility. Honda's unconscionable conduct should not be condoned, not tolerated. This is not the first time Honda has tried to harm it's customers. The federal government forced Honda to extend the warranty for its automatic transmissions, and repair defective ones. Our vehicle suffered from the same transmission issue, but we fell just outside the extended warranty period. The cost of the part (Honda 04818-s0x-a02zh) is quite high from Honda, in excess of $667. 73 without labor.
While breaking, rear driver’s side passenger seat disengaged. Our 8 year old son was in seat with seat belt on. Upon breaking the seat propelled him forward. His face hit drivers seat and he was lacerated and concussed. Not only did the seat locking mechanism fail, but seat belt lock did not engage or prevent him from being flung. Brought vehicle to dealership same day as incident. They claim to have attempted to recreate incident, but used an adult male (instead of a 50lb “dummy”). Because they couldn’t recreate the unlocking of seat or explain failure of seatbelt to restrain, was told nothing is wrong and they attempted to “close the case” with nothing fixed, replaced or explained.
Srs light is on, diagnostic test done at Honda dealer ($149. 00), drivers seat belt buckle was at fault, dealer ordered part and to install at no cost to me. Light would come on for a week or two maybe longer when vehicle was started. Not sure if my airbags were compromised with this light on. Why was I charged for test, I feel this test cost should also be paid by Honda.
7 year old in 2nd row passanger side seatbelt would not release and would only get tighter and tighter. Seatbelt got tighter and tighter around his belly causing pain and crushing his stomach. I had to cut the seatbelt to get him out. Tried pressing every button and opening and closing car door, locking and unlocking and restarting car, but nothing worked. The more we tried to pull on the seatbelt, the tighter it got. The seatbelt would not release or give any slack to get him out. I am taking car into the dealership for a dianostic this coming Friday.
The plastic seatbelt buckle in the third row cracked apart. No one damaged this buckle, the vehicle was not in a crash, it appears to be defective.
Motor mounts worn out.

My car is a 2007 odyseey and seatbelt light is on constant and will not go off,I guess my car was not included in takata seatbelt recall and now dealer wants a thousand dollars to fix even though it's a safety recall but not on my VIN number and has not come up on my vehicle yet. My car is due for inspection next month and I just paid 2 thousand to fix everything else . And now it will not pass with light on. When will recall come up on my vehicle.
Vehicle was stationary. I was sitting in the front passenger seat. I started to put on my seat belt, but when I pulled on the buckle, I found that the lower anchor point of the seat belt had come completely loose from the frame of the vehicle. No work has been done on that seat belt to my knowledge, so my assumption is that it came loose on its own. Clearly this is a major safety issue and could have resulted in a severe injury or death if I had been in an accident just before this bolt came completely loose.
Purchased a new 2016 Honda Odyssey in 2016. I noticed my seat belt was starting to fray in late Aug 2020. I called 2 local Honda dealers and spoke to service. I asked about the seat belth, I was told no recall, and Honda does not cover the material. It is cosmetic. I fail to see how a fraying belt is cosmetic. The mechanic who replaced the belt system fet that the belt may not hold if there was a front end collision. I asked Honda to reimburse me. They declined stating that the web material of the belt was not covered. It was a safety hazard. The mechanic stated he had never seen anything like this. I feel Honda is ignoring this since this may be an isolated case. It is clearly a hazard, and a defective belt.

My daughter & her friend were in an auto accident. The friend was in the passenger seat. Upon impact, the seat belt mechanism apparently broke and did not keep the passenger from being thrust forward & having impact with the vehicle resulting in a concussion.
Tl the contact owns a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving 25 mph, when another vehicle t-boned into the rear driver sliding door. The air bags did not deploy. The contact stated he sustained a tear in his left shoulder and a herniated disk on his lower back but did not seek medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to local dealer planet Honda (2285 us-22, union, NJ 07083, (908) 964-1600). In a second incident while driving approximately 25 mph a deer crashed into the front of the vehicle causing severe damage to the front end but no air bags deployed and the driver side seat belt failed to secure the driver. A message srs failure had displayed. The driver sustained a torso injury and small lacerations from the shattered glass. No medical treatment was required. A police report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was not towed. The vehicle was taken to route 22 Honda (1480 n. Broad st, hillside NJ) who replaced the driver side seat belt and buckle was replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,631.
Srs light stays on when car is running. Honda representative says recall work on our car's srs system was done twice, in 2014 and 2017, and for any further work we must take it to a dealer.
My passenger doors stopped opening by button and handle, turning signals, brights, dash signals, windshield wipers, door locks, horn. All stop working whenever the car feels like it and more then a couple don't work at same time. Driver side passenger seatbelt doesnt stay tight for my daughters car seat abd unable to use other seat as that door doesnt work at all anymore. The steering is also very difficult when turning into a parking spot to the point that I have to use all strength from both arms to pull the wheel into the direction I need the car to go.
# what happened my 7-year old child (around 50 pounds, 4'ish feet) was in the 3rd row seat and attempted to put the seatbelt. As she was doing this, she somehow managed to get knotted with the seatbelt around her stomach (see photo). Attempts to loosen the seatbelt did not work as the seatbelt seemed to have locked up (even after putting the car in park) # detail 1. We were coming back from newport, ri when we ran into this issue. 2. I pulled over and we immediately started working on un-ravelling the seatbelt (since it could potentially cut off circulation on the child) 3. Even after stopping the car and putting the car in park, the seatbelt would not slack and loosen. The child had clearly got tied up in the seatbelt. I would expect that the seatbelt would slack (aka: not lock up) and allow the knot to loosen and for the child to come free. However that did not happen. Despite numerous efforts to wiggle free and pull the seatbelt for slack, nothing would give. 4. We finally managed to find a scissor and cut off the seatbelt. As soon as the seatbelt was cut off, it made a cranking noise and coiled back into the restraining system. . Read more...
My 2001 Honda Odyssey just recently shows that the red srs light stays on continually while driving the vehicle. The owners manual indicates that some part of the safety restraint system is malfunctioning. This may include the air bag or seat belt tensioning system.
Seat belt second row (on the driver side) webbing gets stuck inside and cannot pull often times. I'm not sure if the retractor issue. Break - car itself makes a sudden break and release right away while cmbs system is turned off. Same thing happens while there is no car in front or not switching the lanes.
