The "standard seat assembly" as defined by fig-1a of fmvss 213 defines seat/seat-belt geometry such that a seatbelt buckle shall not extend beyond175mm (~6in) from the seat bight. The standard seems to allow car manufacturers to utilize seat belt buckle assemblies anywhere in the 0 to 175mm range from the bight. A bight-to-buckle (b2b) distance of 175mm makes it difficult (or impossible) to properly secure child car seats, using the vehicle's seat belt, if the child seat depth is shallower than 175mm. This hypothesis was developed after I was unable to properly secure a diono radian rxt car seat (forward facing mode) in my 2014 Honda Odyssey. The buckles in the Honda (see attached) appear to be close to the 175mm threshold. However, I was able to secure the same diono seat in my 2007 Audi a6 because the Audi's buckles are flush mounted in the seat cushion (I. E. B2b of ~0mm). I do not believe this problem is a "Honda" problem, but a problem with the lack of specificity of fmvss-213 wrt how child seats are to be tested. Fmvss 213 s6. 1. 2 simply states that the "standard seat assembly" is to be used, and makes no mention of ensuring compatibility of fit throughout the b2b range. The diono manual (see pg-19, attached) indicates that their seats are not compatible with ". . . Anchor points forward of the seat crease. " I reviewed other child car seat manufacturer instruction manuals and found similar warnings. While the Honda seat belts contain fmvss-209 certification tags, and the diono is labeled with fmvss-213 tags, I believe that these two standards are not compatible. Recommendations: (1)update "standard seat assembly" of fmvss-213 such that b2b is explicitly fixed at 175mm or (2) fmvss-209 must restrict b2b< 25mm. Fmvss-209 s4. 1. E only specifies, ". . . Buckle or buckles readily accessible to the occupant to permit his easy & rapid removal. . . ".

Saturday, October 6, 2018, we were our grandchildren to the zoo traveling from their home . We were using their family's 2012 Honda Odyssey. The six year old was on a booster seat in the third row of seats. I had helped the three youngest out of their seats and gotten them out of the car when the 6 year old called out that he was stuck in his seatbelt. It was twisted around him and I couldn't seem to find the release button. When I asked him how it had gotten that way, he said he laid down while wearing it. He said it hurt and seemed very tight. My husband lifted the back door thinking he could get some slack from above. Instead, the unthinkable happened and it became tighter than ever. We had no time to analyze the belt any longer; that was clear. If he stayed that way for longer than a few minutes, he would have definitely had organ damage due to lack of blood supply. I put the fingers of my hand between the metal part of the belt and his body while my husband sprinted to the zoo office. We were fortunate that the trapped grandson remained calm and didn't thrash around or the outcome would definitely have been a worse one. My husband sprinted back with two pairs of scissors. The belt was too tight at the waist to give me any room to work with the scissors. Then my husband cut the seatbelt from above just below where the belt entered the ceiling and our grandson was suddenly freed.

Need a recall to be issued by NHTSA or proper gov organization. The passenger seat belt tensioner and the buckle were replaced after the srs light was illuminated. Now the driver-side buckle and seat belt tensioner is causing a problem and srs light is on again. Honda is using delay tactics. Want to scan the car for $100 to re-confirm the same problem even though the car was scanned in the prior week! srs light stays on after engine start (obviously stationary).

There was an recall, recall number 17v-725, but the dealer or manufacturer clearly didn't mention when they will ask us to get the vehicle into the local dealer for repair. We didn't even receive any phone call from local dealer asking us to come in and get the vehicle repaired.

I am very, very disappointed in the treatment I have received as a Honda owner. I own a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The seatbelt randomly stopped working and they are refusing to fix it under the lifetime warranty. I have been driving Hondas my entire adult life. Corporate made me jump through hoops to gather my registration information from 2000! they said if I could show loyalty to the brand they would fix it under the "good will program. " they say the car was wreck before I bought it and that is what messed up the seatbelt. However, I purchase the car in 2013. It has been working for 5 years and then randomly goes out because of an accident more than 5 years ago?! where is the logic?!!! well, showing that I previously owned a Honda accord wasn't good enough for corporate to correct their mistake, because I didn't have it serviced at a Honda dealership. I was living in bfe mississippi at the time. How was that my fault? the Honda dealership in rockwall, texas is a joke. They determined they weren't going to fix it right off the bat. Upon further research, it seems Honda skimps out on seatbelts. This is where they cut costs. I had never had a major problem with a Honda up until this point. This isn't fixing something that is no big deal: like the speaker that fades in and out or the locks that don't always unlock together. This is my life they are playing with! it is disgusting! do not buy Honda! I never will again. Toyota wouldn't treat a life long customer like this.
My son was in his car seat in second row behind driver's seat when he grabbed the seatbelt of the middle seat that attaches to the roof and wrapped around his neck. He started coughing when we noticed that he had wrapped the seatbelt around his neck we stooped the car and I went back to take him out but the seatbelt was locked and there is no way to unlock the seatbelt so we had to cut the seatbelt in order to take him out of it. I tried to complain at Honda but they said nothing can be done as its the design of the vehicle and they can't do anything. But to me its really very dangerous we were lucky we saw him but a child can easily die because its so easy for any child to grab that seatbelt. I have attached the pic where it shows how that seatbelt works first it locks into 1 and then into the 2 latch. The 1 latch cannot be unlocked.

My son was stuck in the driver side 3rd row seat belt. We were stationary in a parking lot. The seatbelt did not give or to release to allow us to loosen the strap across his lap. The seatbelt kept locking and tighting on his stomach. We had to cut the seatbelt to release him.
I was in an accident on October 21, 2017, we were heading to cabelas an outdoor sporting goods store. I was not aware of any stop signs and did not notice the car coming from the left of me. By the time I did notice I slammed my breaks but it was too late. The airbags for this van did not deploy but the light indicator was on for airbags being deployed. Also, the front seat belts became locked after the collision. I was left wondering why my airbags did not deploy. I was able to drive my van home but should have not done so since the seats were locked.
I was involved in an accident where my children's and my seatbelts were defective. My children's carseats were not secure and upon impact jilted forward. My son and daughters heads hit the handle on the seat directly in front of them. Honda sent out their team of technical specialist who inspected the van and said the seat belts didn't work because no-one used seatblelts. However the police and first responder are the ones who unbuckeled my childrens seats and it is in the reports everyone was restrained. I'm concerned because no recall or warning has been sent out to others.

The contact owns a 2015 Honda Odyssey. While driving at 50 mph, a deer entered the road and the contact suddenly applied the brake pedal to avoid hitting the deer. The passenger side seat belt failed to retract and the contact's face struck the dashboard. The contact sustained injuries to the face, which did not require medical attention. The local dealer (riverside Honda in marquette, 2025 us-41, marquette, mi, 49855) was contacted and an appointment was scheduled. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the failure would have to be investigated. The failure mileage was approximately 48,500.

Five seat-belts are fraying despite normal use (used in suburbs). For one of the affected seat-belts, frayed section rubbed/scraped against d-ring and developed a slit. Honda dealer store remarked usage of child seat could have caused this, therefore it will not be repaired under warranty. We use a car seat meeting federal child restraint safety standard (and in this case, the car seat was not even rubbing against the slit section). Honda north America states any defect on the seat-material is not considered part of seat-belt function, hence product warranty does not apply. The warranty:"Honda will, at its option, repair or replace any Honda seat belt component that fails to function properly during normal use". Term is up to 15 years or 150,000 miles. Please note that this is 5 year old car with normal use, mostly driven in a small city with children in back seat(s). This seat-belt issue is concerning due to the fact that this is happening to a relatively recently manufactured car, but also, Honda Odyssey is perceived as a safe family car. Parents should feel encouraged to use standard car seat without worrying about seat belt fraying/damaged.
This van was sold to me new from a Honda dealer with an active recall.
This seat belt is 3rd row drivers side. Until 2 years ago this belt was used less than once a year. With the addition of a third grand child it was necessary to use the third row seating, using the drivers side seat. The 7 year old sat there about 3 times a month an hour each time for 1 year. With no booster seat. A year ago we put the 4 year old in that seat as she only needed a booster seat and was quite capable of buckling herself in. The amount of usage did not change. The damage starts 1 millimeter outside of the upper anchor slide and goes for about 18 inches of belt that pulls through the upper anchor slide. It really does not pull across anything else. I have examined the other belts and only the drivers belt shows an extremely small amount of wear in exactly the same area; the lower edge of the belt that first pulls through the upper anchor slide. I cannot even find any parts of the belt that have disintegrated. Laying around below the belt. . On 6/17/2017 the 4 year old climbed into the seat. She told me it was broke. I was shocked, when I examined the belt at the condition of the belt.

Takata recall: I bought a used 2002 odessey with 200,000 miles on it. And after I got it home I noticed the srs light being on. I thought it is a simple loose connection. But after searching online, it seems to be a serious problem which needs urgent attention and fixing.

My daughter was trapped in the seatbelt. We parked the car in our garage and when she sat up to release her belt, the belt became tangled around her waist. We tried for 30 minutes to release to seatbelt but once it retracted there was no way to release it. Finally we had to cut the belt to free her. She was sitting in the third row on the drivers side.
Srs light is on. Dealership is charging a diagnostic fee and possibly more changes thereafter. Anything related to seat belts is supposed to have a lifetime warranty.
The contact owns a 2001 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the front driver side seat belt webbing was shredded. In addition, the contact stated that the seat belt failed to retract intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician informed that there was not a repair for the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.

I parked my car in the driveway of my daughter's playdate's house and stepped out for less than 5 minutes to pick her up, leaving my 8 year old son in the third row in the van. After helping her with shoes and a jacket my daughter ran out in front of me then told me my son was screaming. I thought he was screaming because he was upset with me. I returned to find my son with a red face, streaming tears and holding on to the seat yelling, "mom! I can't breathe! the belt's around my neck! help me!" indeed my son's neck was entangled in the second row middle seat belt. Trying to remain calm I tried to release the belt at the anchor point attached to the left side of the seat with the male end of the buckle but it could not reach because the belt had retracted too far and locked. I tried to get him to turn to untangle but the belt was too tight and continued to retract and lock further with any additional movement. I ran back to the front door of the house, banged on it and yelled for a pair of scissors. Scissors in hand I ran back to the van. The other mother ran behind me, saw my son entangled (now pale-faced but still breathing) and watched me cut the seat belt to release him. The belt was so tight the capillaries around his eyes, on his face and neck had burst leaving red spots. Red lines were evident around his neck and a bruise the size of a half dollar where the belt had twisted was visible. He did not require medical attention as he did not loose consciousness. The next day I explained the situation to the school principal and nurse; his teachers followed suit. While the buckle is used to release the belt at its preliminary anchor point there also needs to be something on the side of the seat itself that can be used to release it instead of or in addition to the actual buckle itself. That way if it locks the belt can still be released.
One of the seat belts for the middle seat does not have a standard release button. Instead, you have to try to use the metal clip piece or a key or other rigid thing item to release the belt. I always thought of this as an annoying design, but did not realize how dangerous this was until my daughter got it wrapped around her neck. The seat belt was locked in the ceiling and retracting tighter as she struggled. She is fine and I got her out without any real damage, but this is an incredibly dangerous design and should not be allowed as some other child may not be as lucky. The car was not moving at the time, it was parked. It happened in my moms 2016 Odyssey, but it has the same design in my vehicle listed.

The front seat belt retractor tensioners don't work consistently. Sometimes the belt is a little loose when fastened after moving around a bit, or doesn't release when trying to put the belt on. When exiting the vehicle the belt often doesn't retract the belt enough to keep the belt or buckle/latch from getting closed in the door. It has been an ongoing problem over the last few years and the dealer said they are not covered by any warranty. As the primary safety device in a vehicle, I believe they should be designed to work reliably for the life of the vehicle. Other vehicles of the same age don't have the same issues.

Later on after a minor impact, front driver and passenger seat belts locked and srs became illuminated. The airbags did not deploy during the impact. The seat belts did not lock during the impact. The airbags did not deploy later either, but the seatbelts locked. Also, there is a picture of the damage at the scene and one taken well afterward. The belts locked and light came on about the same time I observed that the gap had formed in the bumper.
The seatbelt in the middle row driver side has ripped/shredded three times in the three months that I have owned the car I have had a car seat installed in this seat but the rip is high up on the belt and no where near the car seat itself. The first time it happens the vehicle was in motion and I had one of my children strapped in and the belt tore in half while it was being used driving on a city street.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the air bag and seat belt warning lights illuminated. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred after the vehicle was serviced per an unknown recall related to the air bags. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
There is no accident. Seat belt (shoulder portion) is fraying. Not sure if this seat belt is safe or if this is the type of safety issue that NHTSA wants to review. I want to make sure this is not a defect affecting other Honda vehicles.

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. While driving 35 mph, the passenger side curtain air bag deployed without warning. The contact sustained burns on her neck from the seat belt. The rear passenger occupant sustained slight burns to the wrist. Medical attention was not required. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the entire occupant restraint control sensor and unit failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,211.
Seat belt on drivers side gets wet every time it rains. Water is getting into where the seat belt recoils when not on the driver.
The srs light in my vehicle is coming on intermittently. Honda diagnosed the problem as a switch in the driver's side seat belt. Page 53 of my vehicle owners manual clearly states the following: "Honda provides a lifetime warranty on seat belts. Honda will repair or replace any seat belt component that fails to function properly during normal use. " as such, the aforementioned seat belt buckle switch is a component of the seat belt. However, Honda refuses to cover repair to my vehicle. This is a major safety concern, as according to my manual, an srs indicator light may cause certain airbags not to deploy during a collision. Such an event would surely cause clearly preventable bodily harm if they would just honor their warranty. I'm calling on the NHTSA to investigate this issue, as I have found many others in online forums having the exact same problem, with mixed results from Honda.
Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer for seat belt repairs. After the repairs, the air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the srs module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000. Djr.
While driving in a parking lot going no more than 10 miles per hour, I hit a concrete block with the front left side of my car in front of the wheel. It was in a blind spot. My 9 year old daughter, who weighs 62 pounds, was sitting in the passenger seat ( which was not all the way foward. The seat was about half way back). Both of our air bags deployed and only my seatbelt locked. Her airbag should not have deployed and her seatbelt should have locked.
Tl - the contact owns a 2004 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the srs warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the seat belt needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered to replaced the defective part. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 115,000. Pm.
On June 15, 2015 my 2005 Honda Odyssey airbag system light came on and stayed until now, I was scared due to airbag might blown out or causing any trouble while vehicle in use or worst something happen. I took my vehicle to Honda dealer on June 16, and I was told no recalls. They did some diagnose and I was told it was the seat belt buckle and wiring on driver side, the buckle was replace (free of charge), but the wiring cost $550 to have it fix. I refused the service due to no sense and not enough evidence to prove the issue. I did some research and found same issue on same vehicle that has airbag system lights on dashboard. I do believe that the dealer should address this as recall especially if the vehicle never been in accident. Please let me know if there is anything you can do to address this issue. Thanks.
The contact owns a 2012 Honda Odyssey. While the vehicle was in operation, the contact's 10 year old child was seated in a booster seat located on the rear driver side. The rear middle seat belt that was tethered from the ceiling had somehow wrapped around the child's neck, causing the child to strangle. The driver had to cut the seat belt to remove it from the child's neck. The contact indicated that the belt could not be immediately removed because it had to be unlocked and the lock was impeded between the seats. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the incident. The failure mileage was unavailable.
Srs light on dash will not go out. Our dealer say there may be a recall in the works for the srs system. ???.
